What I didn't realize is I could have disagreed to any value and forced the house to be sold. On that note, if your children are growing up in the home you are leaving, that is what they consider their home. They will never consider your new home their home as well. I had 50/50 on a 3/4 then 4/3 visitation schedule, odd/even years for holidays. Once my kids got their drivers licenses, my daughter visited for 3 months then never again, and my son visits when he wants to game (2-3x per week) but doesn't stay overnight. Divorce is considered a Civil matter, so police won't enforce visitation. Courts will assign counseling for the child to find out why child won't (more medical costs for you) but court will not force child or mother to honor visitation schedule. Meanwhile, if you pay child support and fail to pay, that's a Criminal Case, which police enforce. If you want to be on equal footing with spouse regarding kids, force spouse to sell the house so that the kids view each home equally.

A couple in Oklahoma won the lottery but waited till just before the deadline to come to collect. They bought the ticket together but separated before the drawing. A winning ticket was announced but no one came forward. When they came forward it was with separate lawyers. They hated each other so much neither wanted the other to get paid so the money was put in a trust for their kids to get when they each turn 21 the first in the next 6 years. In Australia, you don't divorce someone. It's a no fault system. You live apart for a year and thats it. Either party can send in the forms. You do not "get" custody of the kids, you continue to share equal custody and after the age of 12, the child can decide who to live with. Property and assets are notionally split 50/50 after 5 years, or if it's less than that, then it's the ratio of assets that each brought to the marriage. These are called Consent Orders and you have to get the Family Court of approve them. You cannot take the kids interstate or out of the country without the other parents written permission. You cannot poison the kids against the other parent. You would get banned from access if you did that. The whole system is centred on what's best for the children. If there are no kids, it's simple. If you can't agree to a split of assets, the Court decides for you. No expensive lawyers.
