From a business standpoint I’d definitely open up a restaurant featuring only invasive species for super low cost and turn it to chain restaurants, but I’m also satisfied as a photographer.

i cant believe these guys are acting like they dont know where the lion fish came from, when back in the early 80's lion fish were a hot seller in the Pet Aquarium businesses along the south atlantic coast. From Boca to deerfield on down to miami. It was even common to see lion fish in music videos and television shows shot in florida inside peoples aquariums. And how did these fish get out into the atlantic. Well. back then salt water aquariums business was huge. everyone wanted the bigger and baddest tank. but few knew the complexity of maintaining a tank with various types of fish all from different regions of the world, not to mention the massive time and costs involved. As such when people gave up, instead of destroying the fish or selling back to pet shops (which shops typically didnt buy back not knowing what kinda bacterial infections and pestilence such fish may carry) their owners not wanting to destroy the fish often opting to dump their fish into the canals and outlets all along the coast, some specifically dumping their fish from their boats never considering the possible harm to the ecosystem. i know this, because i saw it first hand many times. Today, those very same aquarium pet shops have far worst than lionfish in their possession, lets not even get into all the species of piranha, and no ones doing anything about it. So with all this talk of the invasive species problem, all one has to do is got to their local big business fish aquarium shop to see first hand the source of the problem. no.. i love exotic animals like the next guy, but considering the utter damage these things can do without their native predators to keep them in check. i say no to their possession and sales, and forget fines, only hard jail time will prevent such sales. cause youd gota be all kinds of stupid to get 15 or more years just to sell an exotic animal no matter the cost.

Interesting. I've seen these native diving in Egypt in the Red Sea, however nobody really ate them there, at the same time I never saw them as abundant in this documentary. I guess there must be some other way they are controlled there. I guess it's like American crayfish in the rivers in the UK, and American grey squirrels computing with the native English / European species. I'm an environmentalist but I need to eat too and I've caught crayfish in rivers in the UK when I lived in Oxford too. I've never thought of catching lionfish though, wouldn't want to try lol. Looks pretty risky job. I wonder what their natural predator is in the Red Sea though.

Is there a grid system where locations/reefs are listed with coordinates, who cleared it and when? For the deeper levels, 200ft. etc., maybe a submersible with a vacuum attached?

lionfish is native to our south pacific waters. we have a similar problem with the invasive armoured catfish which is unfortunately not good to eat.

You know, I had thought this would have been more about the actual species and why they are able to thrive in the environment they were introduced to and possibly talking about the real problem AKA humans releasing their exotic pets into the wild. That's what I think of when I think of a nature documentary. Not some jackass who's view on the creatures being shown is "Kill em' all and let God sort em' out".

perhaps they can find a way to eliminate lionfish eggs. They trained eels, sharks and groupers to eat them can smaller fish be trained to eat their eggs?
