In today's episode we are revamping our mobile chicken coop. Our original plan was to have slatted floors and a rainwater catchment system. In addition to those goals we have a few more ideas of how to upgrade the coop to make it function better on our farm.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.

@@tacka73 Simple heat pad and insulating all pipes works. Heat tape wrapped in a coil as well. We're going to use this process once our Rainwater system is assembled. Super easy to keep everything from deep freezing.

HEY JOSH! one way you can keep your water collection operable in the winter is to use gutter heat cable or pipe heat cable with a length to run from the gutter down your downspout through the tank and down your watering pipe. Connect the heat cable to a small solar panel on the roof with a battery/sml.110v inverter. Depending on the cable. We live on a farm in Colorado where the winters are brutal for animals.

Hm... incandescent bulb and heaters can run off 2 solar panels (90-120v DC) with no inverters needed > water heater ...

Ellie is a natural when it comes to all of your animals. It was so funny watching Josh try to catch a chicken, then Ellie showed him how easy it is. Too awesome. It is so lovely seeing your family show all the love to each other and all animals. Best darn mobile. chicken coop I have ever seen, Definitely the Taj Mahal of chicken coops.

When I was a kid my parents had a setup like that. We lost a lot of chickens to raccoons that pulled the chickens down through the slats in the floor.... If you can put roosts in the coop it will keep the chickens off the floor and protect them from getting pulled through the slats.....

Another way that you could keep critters from attacking the chickens through the slats is to put chicken wire outside the chicken coop underneath on the opposite side of where the slats are attached on the floor joists. Simple and effective.

you should close the smallest gaps as well. Between roof and verticals as well, because a ferret or even a marten will pass through easy. And one in will make some havoc to your life stock.

Better they stay right here on KZfaq. Others have found HGTV and the other networks don't pay what KZfaq does and their in you face and life all the time during filming season. It changes the creators in negative ways. We all like them just the way they are and don't want them to change anything. The content is amazing every week and is about to get even better with all the builds coming. But I do no what your saying .they would be a huge hit on TV but TV taa Kes advantage of people. Chip & Joanna with their Magnolia Network is a good example. They've had to buy the network so they weren't screwed so badly and they are the content creators so they should be making the lions share of the $$$. And now they are but it's a long expensive road to get to where chip & Joanna are now. But doing great

Your ducks and goose sure had smiles on their faces with the paddling pool, and your hens have a luxury condo with a million dollar view now too. Have you thought about nesting boxes for the coop as hens seem pretty much indiscriminate where they lay?

Some are very particular about laying in their nesting boxes and other like to lay by the tires of the coop. Then you have our “yard hens” who stay up near the house and they lay wherever 😂

I've seen someone have same chicken coop setup kinda and in the winter they have 1 solar panel that runs a little 12v pump that keeps the water in circulation so it don't freeze and they wrapped the water tank and all the pipes besides the fittings with insulation to help to but it works and don't freeze. Something u might wanna look into.

It's great you actually have rain to catch. I built a rain-water catchment system at my house, here in Arizona, several years ago, and didn't get enough rain to ever do much and what little water I got, went stale and stank so I removed the system and am working on using virtually no water and planning to move to where there is water. The southwest U.S. is becoming the Sahara Desert.

I have found so much joy watching the process of everything that you have been able to accomplish throughout the process of you building this beautiful home and although there's more building to come in the future! but you actually building the bedroom wing of the house I just can't say that I am looking forward to, and it's because I don't believe that it will be just as exciting as the first day of ground breaking in the original build. it's just that I have seen the exceptional quality of your work . ready for what ever it is that might be coming next in your journey. so maybe I'm unnecessarily rushing your beautiful families amazing journey. lol 😆 but however or whatever direction you decide taking. Very nice mobile Coop. Might want to put metal can out for the feed and put a couple Bungie Cords on lid so Racoons can't get in and Woods Rats can't chew through the plastic to get the food. There's lots of room for everyone, lots of light and ventilation. What about nesting boxes? Might be able get them to lay in them once the get the hint that's their house. Great build. What a beautiful day to start with, but one thing that really touched my heart was seeing the ducks in the water...💫it made back to my young years with our ducks...I loved the💝 and yes we usually have a hot summer and we did have a place for them to swim...they LOVE the water and “swimming” ... and yours are so adorable too... and the your kids love them too🤗

Love your guys ingenuity reminds me of my grand father and my father they always reused anything and everything they could find laying around because that’s the way it was living through the Great Depression and all. For winter water barrel have you looked into a small solar powered heater? Also, with a small,solar battery you could use heated RV tape to prevent freezing of the water in the PVC. Just a couple of thoughts from an amateur. Love what y’all do. Y’all inspire so many of us. God bless.

Love the duck's instant pond. One suggestion for the extension build to your home can the designers incorporate the tree house look similar to your idea for the cabin build.

Maybe when it's time to shovel out the coop. Make a removable panel to just sweep the manure in the hole for an easy cleanup. Enjoying your journey.

Great upgrade on the chicken coop build. With the clear panels and chicken wire as two of your walls. The chickens get air and sunlight and you have the ability to check on them without having to open the door. Josh trying to catch the hen and then Ellie basically walking over and picking her up was both funny and cute. Ellie certainly is the chicken whisperer in your family 🥰. try using a mini solar panel and battery similar to electric fence and during winter use a aquarium tank heater to keep the water running during winter those are very low wattage
