In todays episode we finally get to backfilling the foundation and it looks great! We start out with a little tree felling getting ready to mill our lumber we need to continue building this summer. Alaska's weather wont let up and continues to downpour causing a flood in the crawl space.

Felling the tree is the fun part, then the work begins😂. That Stihl sharpener is really cool. I love it. Looks like you’ve really been putting your dad to work over the summer. Man I wish I could have some of that gravel. Kudos to Rodney the master dirt mover, looks good. Sucks about your tractor and the water leaking through the plastic cover. I’d do what you talked about. Just build a small wall down the middle to add a pitch and shed the water. It’d have to be tight down by the floor. Another thing you could do is paint it. It would help protect wood.

I always ran 2x4’s under the seams of two adjoining plastic covers. Plastic on top of 2x4’s will run water away from the seams. Place another thin board on top of the 2x4’s to sandwich the plastic between the wood. Nail it down. Now your seams are 1.5 inches up and the water runs away from the seams. It won,t leak. With what you just did to seal it, slide 2x4,s under the seams to raise them up.

My suggestion is you can’t mill right now because your tractor is down, but you probably have an abundance of 3-5” diameter trees on the property that can be either cut to fifteen feet or in half to span the deck and either pitch from the center or from one side of the foundation, then put plastic on to run the downpours off. Might run one side long to not wash away the dirt around the foundation. You don’t want anything too elaborate because you will be framing soon enough. You will adapt, improvise, and overcome this Ryan. Best of luck to you!

I've watched other off grid homesteading they would seal the seams with waterproof caulking and then they would seal the wood with waterproof deck paint sealer. Don't skimp buy the best which will probably be Thompson sealer.

Just a little concerned that condensation could build up under the plastic and could build up mould. Try and keep plastic up and have ends open so air will blow through and dry the plywood .

@JosephStDenis-dz9hq 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe remove the plastic and let the the water soak into the gravel so it drys out and otherwise the water moisture will have to evaporate and have to go out through the plywood and your access hole. You might consider an additional temporary hole in on corner to get air flow to help dry.

Sorry for your troubles but here is a few ideas for you. First get your tractor to ESI in Fairbanks and while there see about either renting a tractor from them or a skid steer. Pricey probably but you can get to building. And if you visqueen keep leaking t the seams go to a greenhouse supplier and get some green house plastic. Not sure how big your house is but I bet you can get some to cover or get it off the net. Not sure if they are still there but I think totem used to rent equip there in Tok. The rental place I used to work at in Delta unfortunately quit but we do also have Airport equip in Delta but I think you would have to get something in Fairbanks as the Delta location does not have a skid steer. In the mean time with a skid steer you should be able to use your tractor bucket to mover the logs. I know Chitina is open but but in my opinion you need to get back to work :)
@wildwoodoffgridalaska
@wildwoodoffgridalaska 3 жыл бұрын
Great idea about the rental but too much money for my wallet. Sometimes you just have to step back and go fishing😁. I think we may end up doing some milling using good old fashioned hard labor to move the logs. Take care.
@aspendell209
@aspendell209 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you got the plastic on there in time. If you hadn't, you would have a lake down there. Since you essentially have a sealed working basement, it may be worth it to dig a 2' deep sump or 2 inside. Then you can collect the water that gets thru the plastic and simply sump pump it out. Have you considered renting a small track loader with grapple forks for moving logs/lumber. They are a lot cheaper if you rent them by the month.

Loved the video, had my first cup of coffee while watching, like the ad says, "best part of waking up..." haha. We had a heat wave here in upstate NY over the last week, high 90's and one day of 104 so opposite weather to yours. Interesting observation about the sun's intensity in Alaska. After working at several fly in camps I always said that It was the hottest place I ever worked, sort of defied logic in that I know for a fact it was much hotter temperature wise in Sonora, SoCal, Arizona, and Nevada where I worked. I am sorry for the troubles with keeping the sub-floor deck and below dry....I feel you are taking the best approach though. Only suggestion I might have is to construct a short height ridge wall in the center then stringers sloped out to carry some metal sheeting with plastic back up underneath. Snow load and standing water will be a constant fight on a flat surface where a ventilated/sloped surface protecting the deck would shed the majority of the water. Snow removal would be easier with a sloped cover as well. Easier said than done for sure but considering the fact that you won't start putting up walls, etc until next year.....might be worth doing. Looking forward to seeing the dip net harvest to come.

How about a two part garage floor paint. That would certainly waterproof it. Although, if you go this route, i would mix some sand in with it, otherwise it might be too slippery when wet. Great job so far though:) What are you going to do for ventilation in the basement? I would think you'd want at least one vent on each end that you can open in the nicer weather and close for winter.

Just discovered your channel :). Perfect timing as we are looking to move to Alaska . Especially enjoyed your land buying video . So informative and enjoyable to watch . Question .....can you become a resident if you just own a vacant piece of land or just renting a house ??? We would like to retain residency as quick as possible to be able to take advantage of the land buying program . Moving from Michigan so it’s quite logistical:). Thank you so much for sharing your day to day life with us !!

Residency requirements can be met while renting for sure but you would need to look up any specifics for yourself. My understanding of the requirements are that you must reside in the state for 12 consecutive month and claim AK as you state of residence for tax purposes. Getting a drivers license as soon as possible helps establish your resident requirements as well as registering to vote in AK.

You need to have the plastic/visqueen to have angel with a peak in the center that way the water runs off and you have no places for the water to build up. A peak running through the center is what you need. Plastic/visqueen will sweet to because up in Alaska you may not notice it as much but you will have different temperatures in a bunch of different things the soil and river bottom and rock area's are all different temperatures. The under the house is very important because unless you're above the outside side even a foot the water will drain down into the soil riverbed soil small rocks and collect at a spot with the least amount to resistance weather it's through the dirt or other things were it can collect the easiest. You all ready did your foundation but sealing that off with something like concrete is your better option with a low point to have a pumping spots and collecting the water spots. You said the up in Alaska the sun likes to make things warmer. That's called the angle of the earth to the Sun. Were the sun light has more of a projected beam. You may not understand that until you study about the angels of the earth to sun. In all northern hemisphere you will find the same thing. A nother thing on that is the atinesfear where it's the thinnest like in the northern and southern attinestfears. Good luck at your dip netting

I believe building a cover that is sloped and vented is our best option to let the water run off and to keep some ventilation flowing over the floor to eliminate any sweating.

You got no leverage on a 60 ft anything when tied off 8 ft from the stump (should be 35 - 40 ft minimum and again you cut in 1/2 by using snatch block /should have used a rope in the woods with a (flying dutchmen hitch (look it up) I owned a tree co (46 yrs) but stay lucky cause ignorance will kill you or squash something important /Ed

I’m in no way an expert at anything but this country(especially Alaska) was homesteaded by folks like me who learn as we go and may make more stake but hope to have more successes then failures. By the way I did log professionally for some time in Ak and actually have some experience felling trees.
