You are also forgetting one fact: unreserved category seats are for all. In west bengal primary school service exam, 70 percentage of unreserved seats went to OBCs. In total, they got 70 % of unreserved seats + 27 % of total seats as a quota. That's a huge number...In total they got around 65 % seats. If every community wants their share of seat population wise, then it is better to remove unreserved merit based quota. Just implement population based, community-caste based quota....

I guess the members of our constituent assembly had the same pure heart as you so that atleast India could have had reservations after independence. Thanks for bringing out the details. Perhaps a good policy for reservation may be the following: Look at details familywise. Restrict reservation to first generation learners in every community. Define first generation learners as people whose parents are NOT graduates. Nevertheless, it is not clear if this will take care of the social backwardness despite economic forwardness -- where the society continues to prevent people belonging to OBCs from being part of social functions. I have seen in Chennai that many a time people belonging OBCs are seldom invited to upper caste functions. Another issue is the representation of women in all walks of life. I think this also needs to be addressed simultaneously. As Manu said "Women and Shudras" need to be treated on par, even in upper castes!:(

Honestly I think reservation shouldn't be there. I know this is an unpopular opinion but such policies would only create more divisions. Of course inequality exists and there needs to be effective measures to address those but I don't think reservation is the right way. Then again I know that reservation can never be stopped but at least it should not be increased further and instead more focus can be given on changing the ground reality.

I'm frustrated with the state of our country. We have so much potential, but we are lagging behind other nations in development, infrastructure and justice. Our leaders are corrupt and incompetent, and they don't care about the people. They have wasted 60 years of our time and resources. I don't hate congress, I hate the system that allows them to get away with it.

I'm a Christian and I'm general category guy but I belong to middle class. Reservation literally is a slow poison not just for we middle class general category people but its also hampering our country to next level by allowing the undeserving people to aquire the seats in top most institutions and jobs. Later on the same folks who entered the system through reservation turn themselves to corrupt peoples. As per indian government, it seems we general category people are responsible for our ancestors being nobles and this is the reason now we will be guaranteed with an absolute zero from the government no matter whatever financial situation we belong meanwhile a SC & ST are given with bunch of priveleges despite they forms the majority population too gets financial exemption to scholarship to low score marks in job interviews and Universities just because their ancestors faced sufferings and were poor fellows hundreds of years ago, so no matter how rich a particular ST or SC is, they must get the generosity, sympathy and reservation for the pain of their ancestors. In my colony, all the doctors are SC while general category people from middle class are left with no option. Btw no country in the world has this level of insane reservation system like India and ofcourse this insane reservation system of India was actually made only for the 10 years after India's independence but we all know behind the doors the majority population SC ST OBC always had majoritarianism against us

Bihari voters should be progressive rather then Caste Based Unless and until Biharis vote on genuine issues like Education, health and economy the state will continue to be BIMARU It's very sad fact that BIHAR has a very low HDI compared to many African countries!!!!

I am also from Bihar, from a backward castes dominated village, I would like to mention that my village has 7 goverment schools(including 4 KANYA PATHSALA) but the reality is that only about 10% of the students goes to school regularly for studies because majority of the teachers remains absent daily. Most of the teachers that work there are selected through reservation who don't even know the english vowels. I feel really sad that the peolpe have selected a backward caste CM for many years and still getting no result. Our village MUKHIYA also belong from an extremely lower caste.

Political reservation is justified, but not educational reservation or reservation in jobs (on the basis of caste), because they are violating merit and they are not for representation. Casteist reservation for political parties is a tool for dividing and ruling. It seems that, while BJP wants to divide people on the basis of Hindu-Muslim, some opposition parties want to divide people on the basis of castes.

A so called super power/ developing nation still hankering after caste system in 2023😂. The only reservation that should be there in today's time should be based on economic condition and nothing else. Till the time reservation is there and talent/ merit is relegated to the back seat, there will never be true progress of a country. I would never go to a SC doctor who got 50 in his exam while a general candidate doctor got 90 in his exam. Reward talent irrespective of caste and creed, that's the way forward. We are still caught in the dark ages, sad reality.

Well, it is difficult to understand... If OBC reservation is 27% that means other cast can apply only for remaining 73%. But OBC can apply for 77% right? So if this quota increased to 62% then OBC can apply everywhere but others can only apply to 38%. Here ST SC are hurdles for OBC right? Cause only place where they can't involve. Also lets understand privilege card : So you are saying if someone is learning with best teacher and other didn't had good faculty, then how to decide who is privileged and will other get reservation. Lets take example of job: For same job in villages someone is paid 5000, but in city he gets 50000. Then what? Might looks like foolish argument but think with open mind. Do India really need reservation?

This issue of educational reservation is the most burning now, according to me. Many students who are actually capable of gaining seats in prestigious institutions like IIT, NIT, AIIMS etc. are becoming unemployed and are having no access to education. They are becoming confined to lower levels of the education and employment system. No doubt that the race b/w the BCs and the privileged is unequal. But, measures must be taken to provide facilities to the underprivileged. And, in the end, even though facilities are provided, it depends on the nature of the student. I personally support the fact that merit (and not caste) is the factor that guarantees you good education. If Dr. Ambedkar, who also came from a lower caste, could rise to such heights independently, why can't the modern generation belonging to those levels of society??? This is my opinion, as far as education is concerned

You forgot to mention one VERY IMPORTANT FACT that a reservered category has technically the benefit all seats of General (Upper) Category. This is possible and does happen if they qualify with higher marks exceeding the cutoff of general category, then they automatically get the seat of a general category. This overall reduces the general category seats for genuine general category aspirants.

Actually I also not against reservation but you know there are some things which we I think should be introduced to to make the reservation system more reliable... I can see the future when 80% on 90% seats reserved and general students are not able to get any job... And the general cutoff is 95 to 100 percentage....😅 I am literally waiting for that I have nothing to do

When we talk about OBC representation, the problem is that most of the OBC don't consider themselves backward class; they consider themselves Hindu. But the BJP and RSS consider them to be backward classes only. So if OBC needs any representation, they first should stop considering themselves as Hindu.

These things underline everything that is wrong with India and possibly the #1 reason why we are seen with disgust in the World. The kind of people you wouldn’t like to associate yourself with - IN LIFE are all sitting in our Vidhan/Lok Sabhas. Until these incompetent caste politics igniters (who are sitting in power for decades and did nothing for the state of Bihar which is actually an abuse if someone calls you one) are at the helm of affairs, the discrimination will stay. Until the benefits, cherry-picking and government validation in surnames stay - DISCRIMINATION WILL. If this happens casteism will never end in India. I got to know about my caste for the first time when some kids in my class were made to stand up and told that they were eligible for caste-based scholarships. It was weird and awkward.

Cast census is required to know the social status of every religion. But reservation can lead to more internal fighting between religions. Reservation should be temporary option but now its become permanent and political matter. Reservations should be given but not in every field.

Caste is a hard core reality of indian society , B.J.P. means Brahman Janta Party or Bhumihar Janta Party or Bania Janta Party. OBC's more particularly Extremely Backward Caste is nowhere in the Independent India neither economically, nor socially nor politically nor have land possession.EBC in fact is Extremely Bad-luck Caste.

However we say that there should not be caste discrimination..it is evident that it is prevalent in every field , to educate and bring an equilibrium, caste reservation is still necessary in our nation..as you rightly said at the end.

Let's consider the current scenario: We have a youth population comprising 100% of students, and we are dividing them into different categories for educational reservations. Specifically, we allocate 20% to the general category, 25% to the SC/ST category, and 55% to the OBC category. However, it's evident that a significantly higher percentage of students from the general category manage to access and complete their college education, likely more than 90%. On the other hand, only around 20-30% of students from the SC/ST category and a similar percentage from the OBC category successfully make it to college. In terms of the overall population, 18% are categorized as general, 5% as SC/ST, and 6-7% as OBC. The concern here is that the 18% from the general category do not receive any benefits from reservations. However, within the 11-12% of the population in the OBC/SC/ST categories, a significant proportion already comes from families with government jobs or stable employment, which means that only around 10% truly benefit from these reservations and are likely coming from impoverished backgrounds. In this context, the argument is that while the general category doesn't receive any reservations, a substantial portion of those categorized as OBC/SC/ST enjoy unconditional benefits from these policies. This situation raises questions about the equity and effectiveness of the reservation system, as it seems to favor a relatively well-off segment of the reserved categories, leaving behind those who genuinely need support to escape poverty and access higher education. (I acknowledge that my perspective may be biased, as I, too, did not study hard and did not gain admission to a prestigious college. so forgive me if u find it biased but i am and will be sticking with this perspective unless there is really something that can change it) conclusion : its better to reserve less but it should only be given to those in need

If upper class is getting benefits of reservation 10% to 15% people only and obc st sc are getting lower reservation (27.5% to 63%) according to their number by that logic their cut off must be higher than the general/ews category. Clearly that's not the case so I think there is more to it than just numbers.
