Well we finally got a decent rain on Oct 6, 2019 so after the first part of the rain I decided to take a walk and see how some of the food plots are looking, but particularly the Milo for deer that I planted on AUG 8, 2019. That was WAY TOO LATE during normal weather conditions and time of year, but I think it just might work! This year has been a major food plot nightmare so I've tried to add many different layers to hopefully end up with Some decent food plots, and the Milo was one of the layers. The seed heads are starting to come up, and as long as we don't freeze out I think they will have time to mature, but stay tuned to find out for sure. I had Lots of critics that said it would never mature being planted that late, but remember we are pretty far south. Thanks for joining me on the tour, like and subscribe to follow all of our land management projects, deer habitat improvements, food plots, duck ponds, our Kentucky farmhouse rehab project and much more county living adventure. Kapper Outdoors, living the dream, one acre at a time.

We had record rainfall in the spring, but I'm not sure we got enough to even measure in August and September. I dug the sweet potatoes a couple weeks ago and it was dry as dust as deep as the plow would go. My cover crop is just sitting there doing nothing.

Yeah that really sucks man it's just kind of unreal the bazaar sequences. Now if we can just even all that rain out a little we'd be in good shape, good luck to you as well

I have best luck with oats and clover mixed . When I cut the oats down they re seed and the stubble protects the clover. till the stubble disappears.

Wow. I didn't realize how many different plots and patches you got there. Some of it looks pretty good. Hope you get some rain and warmth to spawn some quick growth before the season hits.

You have frost and freeze temps forecast for this weekend. That'll probably do it for the growing season. Time for corn piles. I put out 100 lbs last Thursday and it was all gone in 4 days.

I don't think we're going to freeze this weekend I think they raised the temp a little bit for the forecast upper 30s low 40s and if that's true with the 70s and 80s I think I've got a lot of growth left we'll see

Been a tough growing year. Seems like people were either too wet or too dry- not very many places got a nice balance.

You surely do need rain. The ground really looks dry and not much growing time left. But the deer are there and they are eating so they may be looking good this fall.

Deer can decimate even a large field of corn. We would have 60' to 100' sections 8 to 12 rows deep just demolished. Would planting some LARGER fields to corn a little away from the main food plots help take the pressure off them?
@kapperoutdoors
@kapperoutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Well I tried that this spring with both beans and corn I planted I think about 8 Acres and with the horrendous weather it just demolished it and the deer finished it off

@@kapperoutdoors LOL You've been sounding a lot like a farmer lately, not enough rain, too much rain.... Keep up the effort and pay attention to when farmers are planting and get your butt out there too!

I have the exact same planter. Using plates that have holes in them. Have some problems with the milo seeds getting stuck in the holes. Your plates have slots or holes? Still had good results but deer really didnt mess with the milo much unti after firearms season....about mid December. Then they wiped out the 2 acres shortly before muzzle loader season opened...lol.

The plate adapters I have, are a series of tiny holes with a flat plate underneath them. Have not had a lot of problem clogging, but I do get some blank spots here and there, but that is just common with these old planters. Guess you need to go bigger for this year! LOL. Good luck. Just planted like 3 or more acres this month!

@@kapperoutdoors gotcha. As I said I had a lot of grain. Used a high yield hybrid about 50 inches tall. Actually did another acre plus Im thinking about electric fencing part of it until just before mz season. You have the same plates. Metal AC with the spacer. I took a drill bit the exact same size as the holes and polished each hole. That helped a lot. They were old plates.

I've seen the deer nibbling on the Milo already. I shot a nice buck that was in the Milo as well LOL but it still doesn't compare to corn or beans. Thanks

Only have limited sized fields and don’t think corn will survive the deer population. Heard the deer leave the milo alone until late.

I think you’ll have better luck with the deer eating it at that height! They don’t like it as well whenever it’s really tall

Hey Kap, long time no opinion spewing. Here in central Ohio we feed our deer just like we feed our women, corn and beans! Go back to the basics and you won't be disappointed. Did I tell you I got sprayed once?

You obviously got sprayed at least once, because you forgot that this spring I planted like eight acres corn and beans! Remember the torrential rains?
