On this weeks off-season work video we are planting sorghum to screen access, create cover and to add more late season food to our property.

I planted sorghum 2023. They decimated it late season. I’m in south central MN. Also, Northwoods Whitetails HD screen can’t be beat. I tried other brands, nothing compares!

Did the deer eat your sorghum? How about around your stand?

What was your process for the switchgrass ? From prior year spraying to planting to what you did for spraying after planting and mowing in the future years??

So we have done it a bunch of ways at this point. From frost seeding plus spraying, to frost seeding in combination with tilling, to just tilling in early June. To be honest we had the best results with the area we just tilled in early June, broadcasted seed, sprayed atrazine, and then walked away. Haven’t done a single thing to it sense. We had a crazy spring that year with it being the first on the new property and we did that last minute, thought it was a total failure the first year, looked like 100% foxtail. Second year to our surprise it came back in 100% switch, hardly any weeds because the foxtail made sort of a weed mat. Got around 4 foot tall. This year it looks great again and I expect it to be 6ft tall+. Couldn’t have turned out any better. We have definitely had better results where we till or disc, even though that is contrary to most advice. We have also had great results where we have frost seeded in combination with where we tilled. Really, it will all turn out fine and we haven’t had a failure yet it just takes a lot of patience and reacting to what you are seeing with weeds and conditions. If you search KZfaq “Brunk outdoors switchgrass” I think we have 3 or 4 videos specifically on this topic, hope this helps!

How good a deal did you get on the 7000 JD planter? Would love to have one but in my area they usually go close to $4000 at auction. I can do a lot of broadcast planting in my food plots for that kind of money.

Yeah we got ours for under 3 but I can’t remember exactly. Definitely expensive but a steal compared to anything else that would come close! Makes things so easy when you can no till. And it’s all mechanical so easy to work on

Great video! Do you think a 50hp Kubota hst 4x4 with loaded tires could pull a 6 row planter like yours?

How are the Kinze meters? I'm thinking about getting them for my 4 row JD 7000 planter?

I'll see if I have any success. Thought to tell. I'm in north central south dakota so went with a fairly low population rate. I ran 35,000 for part and 18,000 for part to see how it goes. I get less than 18" of precipitation a year.
