My daughter had absolutely no words but "dad" at 3. I use to just cry and cry because I just wanted to see her not feel so frustrated. I was told by one speech pathologist that odds are we were never going to see her catch up, unfortunately. She is now 11 almost 12. She can talk. She also won our districts science show, our districts math competition, is in robotics, karate, sung and rapped at her schools talent show and is currently in "charge" of the yearbook team. My sweet autistic girl, who was behind in everything, showed out on her own time. We were told she would never really talk. Well, she talks a whole lot now. Lol

Mikko is absorbing everything right now. When she does break free, people will stand up and take notes. I have no doubt she will be one of those people that will leave a footprint in this land. Go Mikko, you have your own cheering squad at two!😂

I teach second grade and a boy entered non verbal but he liked to draw and interact with other boys. So I sat him between two very talkative friends just so he could experience others speaking to each other around him. And they included him like he was no different than them, talking, laughing, having disagreements. At the end of the year he was clearly speaking short sentences . One day as I was giving him individual instruction he said to me, “This is hard”. It was a moment that I will knew, as we both laughed, that it would always be a memory that I would keep in my heart. Your daughter is on her way to fully verbal and healed in Jesus’ name. Amen and amen!

She will talk but it will take lots of time, patience, and various forms of therapy. This was me up until I was 5-6 years old. It took another 30 years to speak as I do now. I'm 40 now, still autistic, always will be. I've come a very long way from 1986 when I was diagnosed, but my mom never told me I was on the spectrum, it was my aunt telling me at age 31. I'm so glad to see Mikko progressing so beautifully. Your channel helped me to see things from a different point of view, and to come to an understanding of my own autism.

I HIGHLY recommend teaching her more sign language. It helps develop the language areas of the brain and gives her a way to express herself, her wants, needs, and feelings as she gets older. My job is working with kids on the spectrum and one of the kids I work with was nonverbal. Once he was taught sign language his maladaptive behaviors started to reduce drastically because he had a way to ask for what he wants (instead of standing in the kitchen yelling because he's hungry or us holding up every item and asking him does he want each individual item, he could sign 'cereal' 'hot dogs' 'apple sauce' 'grapes' etc instead of screaming). She might not be able to use them to communicate yet but as she gets older and those communication areas further develop, it will really help. The kiddo I spoke of it almost 10 now and while he has a fairly heavy speech impediment he does speak and can be understood by everyone if they're patient. Some great words I would start with would be foods she likes, hygiene and routine things (potty or toilet, bath, bedtime, etc), hurt/ow (HUGE for being able to know if/when she is in pain. She can sign hurt and you can ask her to point where), and so manner other things. Some people used to think teaching sign language would remove their motivation to learn to speak, but it's really the opposite, you use spoken and sign language in tandem and it helps so much.

She is non-verbal because she doesn't articulate as well as other children her age. She's delayed because of this factor also. But she does mimick and recall some words & appropriate responses at the appropriate time! I believe in time, she will communicate verbally more it will just take time. It's your time, patience, and love that motivates her to do more. It's awesome to watch. ❤

Whether she speaks eventually or not, I love how invested your family is in meeting her where she's at. You have a beautiful loving relationship. I worked in special ed for over 20 years and just because someone doesn't speak like other people doesn't mean they aren't trying to communicate. She has wants, likes, dislikes, and can have a fulfilled life with or without fluent spoken language. You do a great job providing her with healthy boundaries and opportunities to grow.

My cousin's daughter was placed in EI (Early Intervention) program and she learned to speak even after being non verbal and she is autistic. She over came much of her autism bc of the program. You do such an awesome job 💯💯💯 and you're an amazing mother

This is the first time I've cried from one of your videos. Mikko is beautiful and tries her best. I've had a lot of questions since I first came across your channel. What I can say is. I've learned a lot about autism since then. I truly thank you for sharing. Blessings.

This was a very important video for you to make so that other people can understand. This is why I personally make a distinction between being non-verbal and being non-speaking, even though a lot of people use them interchangeably. She's verbal in the sense that she is vocalizing (most of which are just for auditory stimming) and even saying some isolated words, but she's still non-speaking in the sense that she's still not using speech as her preferred communication method, she still relies on gestures and other non-verbal communication the most to get the message across. The fact that she only says things like "good morning" when she's prompted is, in itself, because of her autism. I'm 31 years old and, for the most part, I will rarely be the one to initiate social interactions even though, if someone else does initiate I can keep up a conversation just fine.

One thing that might help with her talking is repeating the words She says a few times to her so that She can prounounce words better and it could help with her overall talking

Your daughter Mikko reminds me a lot of my own daughter except that Mikko makes more eye contact when you’re speaking to her. My kiddo would only say mommy till she was three, and with speech therapy she began to add more words. By four she stopped the Echolalia, well for the most part, and began formulating her own sentences. She just turned 5 and continues to progress, but of course is not there yet. According to her evaluations she’s a year behind with her verbal skills; however, she struggles to start conversation unless you initiate it or if she’s angry she has a lot to say. The importance is that Mikko continues to show that pattern of progression in her verbal skills.

Mikko is excellent, and Mom you are superb! God is always in control, days you may feel like you can't trace Him, but God is still working it out. My nephew is autistic, and my niece feels overwhelmed at times, but God.. Remember there are No Whys, No whens, and No Hows Just Know He Will❤❤❤ Just believe God is! Much Love🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

I was one of those cases where an autistic child begins to develop speech normally before becoming non-verbal around the age of two. While my parents were concerned about it, they were still patient with me and gave me the help I needed, and I was speaking again by the time I was four. With that being said, I can’t speak on behalf of Mikko, but all I can say is just be patient with her. Keep giving her the support she needs and she’ll blossom in her own way. You’re doing great, and so is Mikko!

My counselor guided me to parent differently. Very much like you do…gently. It is so much better. I really applaud you!

My niece who has autism didn't talk until she was in her almost 30,s . She won't start a conversation, but if you start a conversation with her she will talk . Not a long conversation, but she smiles a lot . She is now in her middle 40,s . I pray for your daughter to one day start talking when you least expect her to . 😇🙏

Some things worked for us: 1. Sign Language 2. I minimized shows that encouraged repetition in speech 3. I took the Hanen course and read the book Speech Therapy. 4. Homeschool. He is eight now and speaks clearly and fluently (even tackling two new languages). I am cheering on your family 👏

My grandson was not talking for 3 years, we took him to the speech therapist and he would not speak to her, the therapist even brought his twin sister in the room to see if she can get him to speak but he would not but as soon as he got outside he told us he wanted to pee, lol. The doctor said our words take time to process in his brain before he understands to answer us. He is 16 years now and he stuttered but speaks. He goes to a normal school and doing much better than his sister. They told my daughter to put him in a special needs class and she said absolutely not. He knows the computer like a genius. Don’t give up on your daughter, she will speak.

My nephew was just like her, but we refused to accept or claim him to be non-verbal. Initially they said he was MR simply because he couldn't speak words, and did his own thing. Everything was on his timing. He didn't start speaking complete sentences until he was 6. They later diagnosed him as having high functioning autism. Now he is 16, in high-school, very talkative, and has lots of friends. At one point he didn't want to interact with other kids. He's amazing and has done everything they said he couldn't/wouldn't. Prayer and speaking things into existence changes things. I don't care what the doctor says or how it may look, always speak positive things over these babies. No judgement, but we never called him non-verbal and accepted that is just what he is. We always declared that he will talk, and he can do everything the kids his age can... and he did! Praying for mikko, and can't wait to see how much more she's going to progress. SHE WILL SPEAK SENTENCES 🙌🏾🙏🏾❤️

My autistic nephew didn't start talking until he was around seven, and he was using full sentences. He didn't talk AT ALL after the age of about 1 and a half. He showed he understood the world and responded to verbal cues, but he spoke very seldom and only to his godmom and veeeeery seldom to me. Like, one word only. He also learned sign language (something I didn't know until he whipped it out at 15 for fun) but he didn't use it with family. Maybe he used it at school, but never with us. Mikko is much more vocal than he was. She vocalizes much more. My nephew was silent unless he was laughing or crying. You're doing an amazing job teaching her. She understands so much.

As an autistic person i did not talk untill i was 6 i only coped and made nosie. I still have non verbal when overwhelmed and can not talk to people i do not know.. I was not Diagnosed with asd and adhd untill i was 30 .. I was just classee as a difficult rude girl and was belittle and bullied by my mum for not been normal so it really warms my heart to see how much you support mikko and how you take the time to understand asd 🥰🥰🥰🥰

I don't know if it's because I work with autistic children at the K-3 level, I think Ican understand some things she is saying. When she looked out the window it sounde like she said "hi birdie what are you doing?" When you were putting her foot in the crocs she said yellow like duck and turned toward the activity board. She is definitely speaking. Echolalia leads to independent speaking. She is well on her way!❤

I'm glad you're a realist. I don't believe the people who said they talked at 25, 9, and 14. You talk gradually not all of a sudden some people are liars. My niece is an 8 year old non verbal darling girl. She says a few words but we don't see much more verbally from when she was a toddler until now. It's 70 percent boys 30 percent girls. I know she was behind cause she was a dry baby didn't laugh often and looked in space regularly. My sister cry's because she taught she was going to talk by 2 she didn't because she wasn't mimicking at 1. My sister would have others thinking she was nuts cause she would tell people my niece was going to talk for 6 months so negative attention focused on my niece as a laughing stock not because she was non verbal but because my sister said she wasn't. I'm so glad you tell the truth and I told others the truth until she told the truth after her 6 months denial. She would have my niece getting made a spectical out of herself as a toddler because she didn't have a clue what they were pushing on her. So dumb people would say like she's so funny when she does this and that and it was her disability. It was so sad to see. I wish you all the best.

I'm working with children similar to Mikko, and it's so exciting - I get to see them babble more week to week, or start to say more concrete noises, or start using a sign without any adult prompting. One child said "owl" the other day while holding a toy owl and boy was I shook! I've found the signs "more," "all done" and "open" useful. I see each word, or sign, or AAC device button learned similarly - it's all one more tool the child now has in their pocket. It gives them a little more control over their world, and it helps them understand how the people around them are communicating a little better. It's all good.

Congratulations to Miko for your effort. But a big heart for her mother! Whitout her mother Miko not grow!

Keep working hard with her, and all your hard work will pay off. When my son was diagnosed at two yrs old. The doctors told me he won't ever talk, he'll never be potty trained, and that he would have the brain of a 3 month old for the rest of his life. His teachers wanted me to put him on medication. But I kept working hard and teaching him every single day. It was sooooo exhausting, and it tore my relationship apart with his Dad because I had to devote so much time to our son. Today, my son is 16 years old and can talk. He understands language, has eye contact, and can read, write, do math, and play the keyboard. He is a miracle, and I'm so proud of him for enduring all those hard times with me, but it all paid off. You will reap the benefits of what you're doing with her now. I'm still teaching my son every day, but it's not as hard as it was when he was a blank canvas. I had to go into his world to figure out how he learned and how he felt about things instead of trying to get him to conform to my world. I even had to teach his teachers how to interact with him.
