Have you ever heard Sanderson's explanation of main character, protagonist, and pov character? The person the story is about, the one who changes, and the one who the story is told through. I think we assume because Newt is the POV the story is about him when he is actually more akin to the setting and sphere. He's the one we care about. He will be critical, but the MC is Dumbledore (one the story is about) and the protagonist is Credence (one who changes) We know Newt gets a happy ending - a life, family, his beasts. Everyone else's story is going to end tragically.

Hmm. Can you give an example Sanderson story with this structure? I've read all of them, but the ones coming to mind right now all seem to have a combo character who fits all these categories (Vin, Kaladin, Dalinar, et. al) I guess maybe Warbreaker? Like Lightsong and Vasher as POV characters, the God King a main character, and the sisters as protagonists? Or some other configuration... it's hard because nearly all of Sanderson's characters change just due to how he writes 🤷‍♀️

I feel that maybe in the final empire, and it’s hard to see this in the rest of the trilogy, both vin and kelsior are POV characters, but vin is the protagonist and kelsior is the main character. Not sure this is the only book of his I was able to apply this to

Newt is the main character just as Harry was. Newt is just less of a focus in Fantastic Beasts than Harry was in Harry Potter.

"Don't take sides" is actually a very classic characteristic for a main character. The 'reluctant hero' is a very often used archetype.

Being a reluctant hero doesn't often mean not taking sides. It's more about not wanting to be the leader/carry the burden

@@Laura-pk2fd I think that from a narrative perspective the important part of the reluctant hero trope is that it's someone who says he's not going to get involved and through personal stakes keeps on getting dragged in. I don't think limiting it to specifically someone who doens't want to be a leader or something similar helps in any way.

@@Drecon84 a pretty big example of that trope is Percy Jackson, we literally start the book with him saying he doesn’t want to be a halfblood and that he’ll probably die a painful nasty death because of it and yet he doesn’t want any other kid to go through what he had/has to go through. We see this echoed through all of the books with Percy, if he can even make the smallest of difference in saving a life he does it at 0 regard for his own (especially in Last Olympian, if you know what I’m talking about. Also in Titans curse, those are the two at the top of my head right now)

Another technical possibility: You mentioned that they had a weird quirk for Newt: "I don't do sides" Maybe that is done so that there is a reason he stayed out of the Voldemort fight - he just took care of the creatures, and didn't focus on the actual wizard fights going on around him. Also, he would be in his mid to late 90s during the Harry Potter books, so I could see him just not wanting to join in the fight even if he were around

That isn't a "weird quirk", that's a symptom of his caring only about doing what is right rather than going along with others because they share some views. Also, Crimes of Grindelwald has an arc regarding this, with his saying "I don't do sides" at the beginning and "I've chosen my side" at the end.

My theory: Newt actually IS around in the books. We're don't hear about it because Harry never properly studied for care of magical creatures, and didn't realize that old Hufflepuff guy he kept seeing was someone pretty important! 😸

I have the feeling that Newt will help Dumbledore get along with Fawkes (which is imo the phoenix we see in FB2) and that Fawkes will me important to either break the blood pact or defeat Grind in a different way. It would fit well since Fawkes is a fantastic beast and thats the supposed theme of the saga

I dunno, I think Newt will realise that Dumbledore isn’t exactly God, but they’re friends, I guess, so he’ll just do what dumbledore says. I also feel like newt has the capacity to say no, as he’s older and wiser than Harry

Honestly, i think you're forgetting how nothing Rita writes can be taken at face value. She likes to stretch the truth for the sake of making a juicy story. I think Newt will be the one to figure out how to break the blood vow thing.

I love how this shows us how you came up with Dumbledore’ Plan. Realizations lead to new questions that cause more digging that lead to bigger revelations. I almost want more Beasts films just so you can develop your Dumbledore’s Previous Plan ideas further.

Albus Dumbledore is accustomed to manipulating other people and Newt knows that. He probably just doesn’t want any part of Albus by the time Voldemort starts coming to power.

The thunderbird going to Arizona wasn't just a Phoenix reference. The thunderbird is a mythological creature supposed to come from that region and nest in canyons. I can remember what specific nations that one is from, but I remember reading about them long before these movies ever came out.

I think it originates form the Sioux people , if I remember correctly but I am not sure ! Edit : Nevermind , the Thunderbird does appear in Sioux Mythology as well as many other North-American Nations’ Mythologies but we don’t actually know the origin of the Thunderbird Myth for sure !

You guys have a very different interpretation of how this series is going to end then I do. I assume Newt isn't involved with anything to do with Voldemort is because he just really doesn't want to be. Newt already doesn't want to be involved with Grindlewald and Dumbledore now when he's young and in his prime so I doubt he'll want to do it again when he's older and has more to lose. Also I really don't see Credence surviving the to the end of Fantastic beast series. His entire character just screams tragedy to me in a way that gives me very little confidence in his surivival.

Now I usually don’t like to be this negative when it comes to fandom stuff. But timelines and characters appearing in them correctly aren’t exactly HP’s strong suit. So I... don’t think Newt and Credence are absent in the main Harry Potter times for any reason other than just not being thought about at the time

And now that Jo's thought about it, this might be the case. Edit: Not everything has to be established since the very beginning. Jo might not have these ideas early into writing HP, but when she added more things, she also filled in holes and fit stuff into the world.

@@Crafyeet That was why the Goblet of Fire was so much longer than the previous books. She got halfway* through writing it before realising that there was a big plot hole, so she had to go back and fix it. *Halfway according to the originally planned length, but after adding in what she needed to fix the plot hole it turned out that what she'd already written before then was more like a third of the total book

I think that it'll turn out that Newt was helping Dumbledore but wasn't a part of the order. Like Molly and Arthur in the first wizarding war. They only joined the order the second time due to their son's relationship with Harry. I'd say Newt and Tina are helping in other ways. It's not like they hadn't been thought of, Newt was mentioned in the books as the author of the book. I don't think credence will survive the fantastic beasts series.

Also I find it VERY ironic that the THUNDERBIRD'S home is in ARIZONA and it can conjure thunderstorms when like.....Have y'all seen Southern Arizona? Outside of monsoon season she don't get much rain lol. So his home would have to be in the northern half of the state. It just makes sense.

What's the timeline for Fantastic Beasts? Wasn't there some sort of uproar that they retconned McGonagall's age so she could appear in the second movie, even though she wasn't supposed to be born yet at the time? I was under the impression that there's a huge time gap between FB and HP, and most of the characters are absent from HP because they are dead from old age, and the ones who do appear, ie. Dumbledore and Grindelwald, are just living extremely long lives thanks to their stronger-than-average magic

Actually, wizards in general live long lives, but because of the times with Voldemort in power, a lot of wizard families and seasoned wizards died fighting/ killed

In fact, most wizards live very long lives. Remember, Dumbledore was like 115 y o in HP so Newt and company are like 90-ish, which is old, but no that old for a wizzard

Yes but I think it was already confirmed that Newt is alive by the end of the battle of hogwarts. Wizards are long living but Dumbledore and Grindelwald are especially long lived

For Newt becoming a Squib wouldn't be so bad. Squibs can see magic, use magical objects, live freely in the magical world... he could do his job with 95% efficiency not using magic.

All in all, it's a shame the films aren't about Newt for now on. We could get to know more of his stories, something more about his children and later Rolf and Rolf's twins, or about animals in general. But no, Dumbledore again because the money didn't match.

So, i could be completely wrong here, but just from the books, i always assumed Newt developed the wolfsbane potion Lupin takes in Prisoner. I'm sure there's some Pottermore article saying otherwise, but i never dived that deep.

It was developed by Damocles Belby, Marcus Belby’s uncle. Professor Slughorn invited Marcus to Slug Club functions, but was displeased when Marcus told him that his father didn’t really get on with his brother at all.

Perhaps Newt is simply too old by the Second Wizarding War? Certainly he'd be well over 100 years old. He may be a capable wizard but by no means is he on the same level than Dumbledore. Heck eben Slughorn in the Half Blood Prince is complaining about how he's getting old when Dumbledore and Harry go to recruit him back to Hogwarts

theory: Dumbledore and Grindelwald will duel on screen, Dumbledore wins, and then boom it was all a vision Grindelwald gets just before the fight because he is a seer. So he pretty much surrenders in that moment. So Rita Skeeter is tecnically right but we also get to see the duel

Newt isn't in the HP side of things because they reference his grandson very loosely. And also, Magical exhaustion is a thing, it's actually why Harry passes out at the end of I believe Sorcerer's Stone after defeating Voldy and then waking up in the Hospital Wing. It was also loosely hinted that the fudge and sweets Lupin gives them on the Express in PoA helps with the magical exhaustion brought on by the Dementor presence. Also, bigger spells have been known to show strain on the castor in the movies, therefore there has to be some form of magical drain on their magical core, so to speak.

really? I remember that chocolate thing more to be a "happy maker" than fighting exhaustion. And I am not sure if the mist-voldy attack really caused magical exhaustion or just physical pain etc. on the other hand you see for example Harry at a very young age and still relatively untrained fighting off several dementors several times in the book. You see Voldemort and Dumbledore fighting each other in a battle of quick casts of impressive magic without either of them breaking a sweat or even breathing a bit more heavily or anything. It doesn't seem to be a difference for the caster if they cast petrificus totalus or a or a fire storm in terms of exhaustion.

@@6666Imperator but remember it's sugar. What easier way on a train with a SWEETS cart to gain some emergency energy? You're right it was used as a mood lifter, but the fact remains that it was also emergency energy even if not for the magic itself. And Dumbledore and Voldemort are much more powerful in comparison to young Harry so their magical core or reserves would have grown. It has been said that accidental bouts of magic are due to both the emotions raging at the time and that acts like pressure to a Wizards magic, so if you get too angry, it's like popping the cork off a champagne bottle and the magic flows out uncontrollably

Yeah, Dumbledore got really weak after drinking that potion, the fact that he was able to get it together till the last moment is simply coz ge has a lot more magic than most of the wizards

@@86upsmaya It's not that he has more magic it's that he has more mental control and will, he was seeing his siblings getting tortured from the potion and then he saw Harry about to die so he took all of that and cast the spell to make the fire and try to help not see it anymore, magic at the end of the day will have more to do with your will and control then pure power

To answer this question you first have to realise that you can help in the wizarding war effort and also not be a member of the order. Take Molly and Arthur as an example. They were not in the order the first time around and they really only joined the second time because of their son's relationship with Harry. Dumbledore probably felt that Newt had already done him a great service during the Grindelwald era and left him to his retirement, probably calling on him for the odd favour.

Fair enough, though Molly may have had additional inspiration to join since her brothers Fabian and Gideon were killed during the First Wizarding War. They were members of the original order and I believe they were twins. They must have meant enough to her since she named her own teins (F)red and (G)eorge. I'm sure her motherly feelings for Harry played the largest part in her membership, but they certainly weren't the ONLY reason. Then of course, Ron was involved in protecting the stone from Voldy and Tom Riddles Diary targeted Ginny prior to them officially joining the order. They were closely involved in all the events leading up.

The fact that mcgonagall is in the film put me off SO MUCH 😂 I seriously can’t come up with any productions about the story. Who knows, maybe jk’s going to bring back Harry Potter who time traveled into the past to help Dumbledore or something. If she does this I wouldn’t even be surprised 😂

@@coldermusic2729 As for the timeline issue - McGonagall was younger in the books, and older in the films. So they probably went by film canon. Since McGonagall was closer in age to Dumbledore in the films so in that logic, putting her around her 30’s while Dumbledore is in his 50’s I guess makes sense. They probably hoped nobody would notice. But people searched her original date of birth that JK Rowling gave her for the books.

1:37 *YES!!* 👏 Each movie is less and less about the Fantastic Beast and who found them! I wanted to see Newt caring for his beloved creatures, not the Boring Backstory of Albus Dumbledore. 2:08 - good to see someone else noticed the shrinking title. Bad that it's happening.

Wow. Are you sure you watched any of these movies? Dumbledore gives his choice of Newt away at the beginning of Fantastic Beasts 2. "Do you know why I admire you Newt? More perhaps more than any man I know. You do not seek power...or popularity. You simply ask if a thing right in itself. If it is you do it no matter the cost." The last sentence says it all. Where was he during the Voldemort era? Probably consulting behind the scenes. As you know he was on the Marauder's Map the day that Harry was given it. Most likely he was visiting Dumbledore.

Let's be honest this would be good. But the reason these characters aren't involved later on in the series is because JK didn't think things through. But in all seriousness I think Credence is going to die that would probably push nagini to becoming less human as time goes on

I believe newt will end up removing the obscurious from credence which may end up killing him. The reason newt wasn't a part of the war against voldimort is because he doesn't like to fight unless he has to, just look how reluctant he was to fight against grinderwald. He only did so after being asked to help credence by dumbledore most likely since he is the only one who can possibly remove the obscurous.

Newt answers the question on where he is during voldemorts reign himself "I don't take sides." He just doesn't care he would rather play with his pets while the world burns around him.. if Dumbledore asked however, he may have aided if he could... but he would not just jump into a war

That just got papers all over it. Random trivia" - You say this in a video about Newt? The Hogwarts scene were we see whar the boggart turned into for Newt came to mind imidiatly. A desk with paper all over it - stands for a lot of fear. My heart went out to you, Ben.

On the topic of newt being around during Harry Potters time. He is actually seen in hogwarts. When Harry is looking at the marauders map in the movie, you can clearly see a tag of newt scamander walking thru the hallways. Now it could be a ghost version of him if he died and decided to come back. But I think he is most certainly around as part of Dumbledore's entourage.

That was only in the film, not the books. He is mentioned as an author of a magical beats textbook in one of the books, buts that's it. Movie and Book canon are too different things (like Star Wars Legends and Star Wars Canon), but Fantastic Beasts is in both canons.

That was probably just an easter egg in the movie. It's not canon, it wasn't in the book, just the movie.

That argument really does not make sense. The movie and books are both canon. One visual and one written both following the same order of events but years of development apart. Just like fantastic beast it came before Harry Potter on the timeline. Yet the movies are being written and developed now. Why would the producers, director, jk, and the artist all miss it as an Easter egg placed by a single grunt and not use it as a purposely placed image for future events to be played out in an overlap movie or some future side story like an origin or mini series.

@@chrisaronson2717 The movies based on the original 7 books aren't canon. The Fantastic Beasts movies are, but we're not talking about those. The Harry Potter movies are based on canon, but they changed many things, therefore they're not canon. If you were asked "What did Harry do with the Elder Wand?", then "He broke it in half" (which is what happened in the movie) would be an incorrect answer. It's not canon.

My theory for Nagini: Dumbledore is going to ~let~ Credence die at some point. He might not directly cause it, but the connection will be strong enough for her to side with whomever is opposing Dumbledore. Thus her service to the second Dark Wizard, also one who can speak to her and know her story and maybe even connect with.

Hold up-if this ends up being right and Newt survives with Obscurous-Credence inside him because of the Philosopher’s stone…then…does that mean that when Flamel decided to let the stone be destroyed in Philosopher’s Stone, he was also signing off on Newt’s death warrant?

Based on my research, Newt and Tina were retired during the Second Wizarding War. As for Credence, we’ll just have to see what becomes of him in the rest of the series.

Newt could still have been involved in the fight against Voldemort but wasn't mentioned in the Harry Potter books since he didn't have a relationship with Harry in the time period. Him and Tina could have been out of the country when the photograph was taken of the original Order of the Phoenix. Though Voldemort's activity was in Great Britain Dumbledore anyone to check in on his activity in other countries since there was none and Grindelwald's reign was further reaching in the wizarding world.

You guys are forgetting a key piece of info in the Dumbledore vs. Grindelwald conflict. Grindelwald isn't the master of the Elder Wand anymore, Newt/Tina is. They defeated and disarmed (respectively) Grindelwald in the first movie.

Wow i am pretty convinced and i could definitely see this happening. In the first film we see Newt healing Jacob by just using his hands and i think he'd be perfectly fine without his magic, tho i'd be kinda sad if he canonically has no magic

I think obscurus are the key to Dumbledore and/or Grindelwald breaking the blood pact. An obscurus occurs from suppressing magic, so what happens if you suppress only a very specific part of magic like say a magical pact. Could this possibly create an obscurus? In the 1st Fantastic Beasts film Newt has an obscurus he managed to pull out of a young girl. Granted she didn't survive, but what if someone as powerful as Dumbledore created a minor obscurus in himself from the magic of the blood pact? I think it would be possible for Newt to help Dumbledore safely remove it with both of their experiences and power.

AHHHH I have a thought on the hotdog. It's PROCESSED FOOD which is what Jacob says was killing him (well, the factory of processed foods) and so I think it's a syllabic opposite of Jacob's natural, homemade pastries. Tina originally juxtaposes herself from "the No-Maj," and I think it also relates to the idea that magic can feel like a quick fix instead of a labor of love. And perhaps, just like the dialogue about WWI between Newt & Jacob, Jacob - and all muggles - do affect wizards. He's making the food she (and other wizards) eats. Both communities affect each other...... I had only planned to say, "hotdogs vs pastries" but yeah, additional thoughts over.

I am going to be really angry if what Dumbledore witnesses in the mirror of Erised is a memory. You are only to see what you want the most, so what he sees cannot be what actually happened, but what Dumbledore wishes happened. It’s definitely a blood oath, and it blocks Dumbledore from moving against Grindlewald, but I don’t think it is what we have been led to believe. If anyone disagrees with this, read HP book 1, chapter 12. I don’t think Newt would ever have joined the first battle if Dumbledore hadn’t tricked him into it. He didn’t even want to pick a side to fight on until his brother lost Leta. I don’t think Newt will allow himself to be manipulated by Dumbledore again. Either that, or he suffers such losses that Dumbledore would never ask him. I am not sure about Credence. My best guess is he is Draco’s grandpa. He’s the right age and temperament.

To be fair, in the fifth book, Ron and Hermione informs Harry that they believe there to be more than the twenty-something members that they've met, and Moody tells Harry of a rear Advance Guard that was to take over if the initial group were to be attacked, although more or less every identified member of the Order save Sirius Black and the extended Weasley family were in it. So how do we know Newt wasn't in the Order? Newt, Tina and/or Theseus might have passed Ron and Hermione on their way to a meeting, and they didn't realize who these old people were.

My thoughts about the naming of the movies. I think they are using "beast" as a blanket term now. The first movie made you think "Animals!" But now it's a colloquialism for something inside of us all? Maybe.

Normally I go along with way more of your theories than I expect. But two things: 1. How does absorbing a very powerful magical being take away your magic? 2. JKR knew about the Scamanders, she knew Luna would marry Rolf, she knew, judging by the book "Fantastic beasts and where to find them", that Newt had a connection to Dumbledore and had a wife. So, if Newt only stays away from the war against Voldemort because of his lost magical powers, how come we never hear about the rest of the family? Rolf could have been mentioned as a student at Hogwarts either way... I don't know, it just still doesn't add up to me.

By the time HP happens, Newt is a grandfather. Also, he tries to avoid conflict. Yes, he's an incredibly powerful wizard, but he doesn't use his abilities for fighting. In many ways, it seems he has the mindset of a doctor, trying to protect, heal, and preserve life. I imagine war would be particularly devastating for him. Dunno. Just my thoughts...

Honestly, It feels like when they made the first Fantastic Beast movie, they wanted some big reveal at the very end so they threw in the Grindelwald reveal without thinking of the ramification and implication to the original series. Then they realized this movie was making a killing at the box office so they decided to make it a 5? movie series instead and cobbled together some poorly thought out explanation as to why this movie needs to keep going

This magic that Credence uses, could be magic caused by thoughts in the movement/space thought mixed with theory thinking, which formed by his anger dwelling in his heart. What I mean is that instead of thinking of punching someone, he has power that listens to his thoughts. Other people do this but lack power, but most things go unnoticed like Harry's hair. Some break them selves, the rare ones like the Dumbledore family, Girndelwald and Tom Riddle Jr. are geniuses.

I actually agree with this to a point. I don’t think it will be Newt who absorbs Credence. I think Credence will sacrifice himself and go into Grindelwald. Which would explain why Grindelwald never escaped Nurmengard. He physically had no ability.

I can't remember who did it but in the movie where the marauders map was partly displayed throughout you can see Dumbledore talking with Newt in his office in one of the scenes so Newt WAS THERE he just didn't have an active role that we could see at the time

I don’t know if y’all have done a video on this but what happens when you get expelled from a wizarding school? We know your wand is broken, but both hagrid and newt still use magic. How are you viewed in the community? What happens if you’re caught using magic? Can you get another wand since we know wizards can get multiple wands? The ministry doesnt track magic usage well so how can they stop you. We also know that wandless magic is possible so breaking the wand doesn’t completely stop someone.
