Those tractors are surprisingly strong. We cleaned up major damage and large trees after Hurricane Katrina and the Ford 8 only had one fuel leak develop after 4 hard weeks of 7 days a week work. Awesome little work horse . Just watch the PTO !!

I enjoy seeing old tractors being reconditioned and put back to work. Greatly enjoy both "Garage" and "Lodge". Seeing your whole family partcipate in your many projects is heart-warming and a top-notch example of what family life was meant to be.

Be careful using that Derek. If that’s a fixed PTO adapter you really need an overrunning clutch. These are famous for people pushing in the clutch to stop and the momentum of the mower spinning keeps driving the tractor since the PTO is driven off the rear end. Lots of 8n Fords went over the hill cuz they were mowing with a rotary mower and no overrunning clutch.

I love the fact your kids seem to be getting raised the right way like we were in the 80s / 90s. I was born in 80, and I remember learning to drive on the old dodge pickup in the field. And I remember helping dad hook up the brush-hog to the tractor, good times!

Brings back great memories, dad was a collector of 2, 8, an 9N's, he would buy them cheap, broken down, an non running, then have them purring like a kitty in a couple days.

Nice. I have a 52 Ford 8n, with the 72" finish mower. And I mow my 3 acre field with it. Just awesome 👌, glad I'm not the only one.

Always enjoy some tractor time, my father had Ford 8n when I was young and I remember driving it around the feed yard and cleaning up the corals when the cattle were sold off.

I grew up driving my grandfather’s 1948 Ford tractor. We ran a woods finish mower, snow blade, and post hole digger for years and years. Good memories. Thanks for the video Derek

Love the old tractor! Growing up on the farm we had a similar one, learned to drive it as soon as my feet could touch the peddles. Love to see the old girl fixed up and see your boys using it for many years to come

This so reminded me of my childhood. You are truly a blessed man. What a wonderful family you have. These are the memories that stick with a child for life. There is nothing better than doing things as a family. You just don't realize this while it is happening, but they are memories that come back to you as you get older, and you miss them and start wishing that you could have the "old times" back. The kids grow up too fast. They are very lucky to have a father and mother who care so much about them and does everything in their power to bring them up right and makes memories like this. My hat off to you Derek!!

I ran an 8N in the summers of 78-81 when I was a lad, bush/brush hogging. I absolutely loved it and the N series tractors. Your videos are magic !!

I really miss that. My Dad had an old ford tractor. We mowed with it, moved dirt with it, and cleared snow with it. Everyone should get to do that. I'm working on that for my adult sons , and the kids I get to be grandpa to.

Love that your boy is driving various veeehickles around your property! I learned to drive in the early '70s on an International Harvester B414 Diesel tractor when I was barely 9yrs old. Drove an IH/Farmall Super M and the farm pickup too. Gives a young guy a big advantage when getting a license a little later in life, as well as learning how to use mechanical powered veeehickles.

I remember the feeling of driving my dad's square body Chevy as a little boy. It had a 4 speed. It was tough to clutch but man I felt like a grown man driving that thing! It's good to see a boy learning to drive a square body. He's gonna grow up to be a proper man. That's an awesome childhood memory to have. Teach him donuts and power slides! That's how you really learn to drive. Take an old Chevy down to the mud pit and get sideways then you really know how to drive.

On my brother's 8n you had to use a Sprague Clutch on the PTO so when you pushed the clutch the enertia from the mower blades wouldn't drive you thru a fence.

My grandpa in Missouri had an old Ford 800 I used to help him bail hay with and bush hog quite a bit, this brings back some memories!

I was about eight when I learned to drive on my Grandpas farm in an old Chevy pick up with a floor shift. They put me in a pasture and said that they didn't care about the truck very much but to make sure to stay away from the fences. What a blast. I am new to your channels and I am really enjoying the content, which is right in my wheel house or perhaps more accurately I should say was. now that I am getting older. What I like most is the wonderful interaction between you, your pretty bride and your adorable boys. I know the older ones won't appreciate the adorable part...but they are. Nicely done.

We live in crowded polluted air Mesa Az where it's currently 110 out with about 20% humidity. In the 90's we had a chance to buy my wife's family farm in Southern Illinois. There was 85 acres left of it. Barns full of old goodies and equipment plus a three story log house with a huge hand built fireplace using rocks tilled from the soil. The 2 acre lake was really cool but the humidity and the harsh winters made us walk away. I see you on your farm and wonder sometimes if we made a mistake. The farm is still in her family but after we turned them down one of her cousins bought it just recently. It is located about 20 miles away from Carmi Illinois. Right along the Wabash river near Kentucky & Indiana. Great video Derek. Spending time with your kids is great.

Derek, I’ve been sharpening lawnmower blades every day for the last 11 years and I’ve never heard of your method. So I tried it today on 3 blades off a Cub lawn tractor and I’ll tell ya, a guy wasn’t kidding! That worked extremely well on those heavy, thick blades! Thank you for the “learning”!

when my son was about the same size/age as yours I started having him drive the tractor (heavily supervised for the first full year). He loved it and I know it made him a better car driver later. Bently seams to instinctively knows slower means smaller dents, I enjoy watching him drive the truck etc - - -

The vid brought back a lot of memories for me. Helping my now deceased uncle with basic maintenance on his brush hog & 8N tractor so he could mow the acreage on the back lot of his property in the late 80s. And later learning how to drive a pickup and fork truck with my dad. Good times! :) BTW, I need to know where you got Bently's shirt. I need one for my son!

Gotta say, my heart swelled with pride seeing Bentley behind the wheel of the truck. It's nice to see that there are still glimpses out there of the America I knew as a kid. It's one of the big reasons I watch both of these channels - they're positively dripping with Americana.

I come from a farming family here in NC I can relate to all the baling twine fixes you mentioned about your grandfather because my pawpaw does the exact same thing. I really enjoy these videos because they're so relatable and funny because what's better than farming with vice grip garage i mean it really grows on a guy

Reminded me of when I used to mow our patch with a 1 cylinder "Poppin Jonnie" wasn't a fast tractor but it could "pull the hinges off of hell" if you put the chains in the right place.

I can so relate to this video. I fitted a 72" PTO finish mower to my '48 Ford 8N. The shaft is never the right length off the shelf. Fords especially use really short shafts. But once I got that worked out, it did a great job.

Under the axle by each rear tire should be a pin that you can hook anti sway bars to the 3 point lift arms. Keeps the implement from moving left and right and contacting the tires. I second an over run clutch as well.

Keep the farm/tractor content coming. Reminds me of working with my dad on a similar rig back in the 1950's. I was about 9-10 also driving a '47 chevy p/u on the ranch.

And definitely wanna see more on that tractor. When I was a kid my grandpa got me a Massey Ferguson to35 with a fisher manual angle plow and I did the driveway with it. Pulled many a wrench on it. Worked on a couple old Fergusons for a local farmer too

loving the new channel, perfect timing too, we just bought a home on 30 acres, so got a lot to learn about being a land owner!

I'm digging the farm tractor and lawn tractor content on this channel. I'd love to eventually snag up a couple small farm tractors but my budget and space constraints limit me to lawn tractors at the moment. I've got an older John Deere 240 that I use to drag stuff around the property and a real old Wheel Horse Raider 12 that I'm working on.

Great video! I love those old tractors. I've got a Ford 600 that was my only tractor for 16 years on a farm in Kentucky. Worth its weight in gold, I'd say. Moved it back up north to Connecticut with me and she did a fine job bush hogging around the old pastures. I picked up a Case 480CK loader to help the old girl out, and they make a fine pair! I'd love to see more old tractor "how to's" if you get the time. I love the cooler version of you on these videos, as well. Keep up the good work, Dad! I had a “beaver” 3 cylinder diesel tractor with a pull behind finish mower and it worked awesome. A good project for this channel would be to find and rebuild a “Gilson” industrial/commercial 18 hp hydrostatic tractor. It’s just the size of a big riding mower but it’s got a hydraulic pump under the seat. It’s hydrostatic drive. It’s got a pto shaft out the back of it. The one I had was a I believe late 80’s model. It had a rear mount pto drive rototiller with hydraulic lift. It had a 48 inch belt drive mowing deck with hydraulic lift. It had a 48 inch belt drive snow blower with hydraulic lift. And it had a 48 inch push blade with hydraulic lift. It had a 18hp horizontal shaft Briggs n Stratton. It had 75 pound rear wheel weights and tire chains. I have never ever seen another one like it here in Maine. I ended up loosing the motor ( valve guides) and sold the attachments. I kept the tractor and I plan on making a wood splitter with the hydraulic pump. So anyways if you could ever find one in decent shape they are definitely worth looking at. Every time I see that Corvair I get excited. Lol I saw one I wanted in high school over 30 yrs ago and still want one.

That over/underdrive auxiliary unit could very well be a three speed unit. Put it in neutral and try pulling out on the shift lever. If it comes out about an inch it's a three speed. After you pull it out, the lever will move forward (maybe back, I forget) into direct drive, which is where you want it for mowing. The two positions you're using now are underdrive and overdrive.
