He will be your grandfather by many other routes of descent as well. And mine. At 25 generations you have over 3 billion grandparents- many many times the world population in William's time, so most of those ancestors are doubling up, and anyone who had children back then is almost certainly your ancestor, unless your ancestry is completely non-European. We can all proudly claim descendency from the Marshal many times over, but well done for finding the precise route of yours.

My grandchildren’s 25th grandfather is also William Marshal 👍 through my daughter-in-laws family line. Yes, William Marshal’s wife comes from a prestigious Irish family. William’s granddaughter (Isabel de Clare) marred into the Scottish Bruce family, who she in turn became the grandmother of Robert the Bruce. A descendant of Bruce (Patrick Stewart) came to America, then his descendants fought in the Revolutionary War. We’re still American. How do you trace your family line?

But now, with todays political correctness and DEI quotas that need filling I couldn’t honestly imagine making a movie based in Medieval Europe today. I did like the Last Duel though but not everyone did. even that had to have a very “me to” message to get the go ahead. We will see how Scott does with the Gladiator sequel. Love from the Philippines 🇵🇭 I'm no Englishman, French nor European, but I believe that chivalry and honor, like music and compassion, are languages well understood with the heart and the soul, regardless of nation or tongue. I prefer peace over war, but for man to truly live and realize it completely, he must always be prepared to charge forward whenever and wherever it is necessary. Especially in today's age where the real battlefield is fought on the conquest of the minds, the sharpest of swords are lips that speak the truth, and the strongest of armors are those who will not bend the knee to liars and deceivers. I pray that the spirit of William Marshall be ever present, from the youth to the old, for all of our sakes. Deus Vult! Christus Rex! ✝️

William Marshall was remarkable for his loyalty and keeping his word. His faithfulness in all his duties made him a amazing person when all around people were always thinking of their own interest. I think he really loved his wife Isabel of Clare. In a time when knights were practicing courtly love were "the lady of your courtship" was never your wife and most wealthy men had mistresses, he seems to have kept his marriage vows towards Isabel like he kept his oath to the kings he served. He had five boys and five girls. Isabel of Clare was an intelligent woman and some official papers of his estate declare something like " I do this... with the consel of my wife Isabel".

What I love the most about the Middle Ages was their understanding of honor, oaths, and loyalty. El Cid was exiled repeatedly by his own king but he was always there to fight for Alfonso and Castille when they were in danger. Even when he founded his own principaity, he did so in the name of his king. That's simply incredible and I don't know of many modern senators or politicians who would go to such lengths to serve their presidents. But that's what these knights did. Serve. And that is something we have completely forgotten in today's world. To quote a little line from Moby Dick, what man isn't a slave? The loyalty that William felt to his kings, England, and to his oath are legendary. He absolutely deserved to be welcomed as a brother of the Knights Templar. In peace, rest, William Marshall

I believe that William Marshall was held captive for a pretty long time when him and his Uncle were ambushed and his leg was impaled by a lance. Like, for a little over a year. He is incredibly lucky that wound didnt kill him. It was said that a yard of the lance was driven thru his thigh. You would think that since they were ransoming him that they would have allowed the mistress of the home they stopped at to care for that wound. Cant get much of a ransom for a dead knight. As a former combat medic, i gotta say that it cannot be overstated how serious a wound like that really is, and back then in 12th century could have very easily been a death sentence, even with the best care and treatment. The luck he had to not only not lose the leg, but survive the injury is just an absolute miracle.

Brilliant Kevin! I knew a bit of the history surrounding some of these things, ready mainly fiction about the time. You certainly have brought this subject to life by your wonderful telling of Sir William Marshall's life. One of the facts that I was unaware of is that he was buried at the Temple church in London, where I have sung a number of times. But did not know of the grave. Thank you, it was well worth an hour and eleven minutes of my life!

In the days of silent film, a stunt man was supposed to be launched from a trebuchet into a safety net. He wouldn't do it...not until they tested the launch with an equal weight sandbag. The sand bag flew many yards past the safety net and crashed through the roof of a rather distant studio.

Isn't it true that knights were treated a little like boxers or combat athletes today? They had full teams who would cater for them, sword carriers, carers for their horses, someone who would train the knight, a personal chef, etc?
