In this video we will finish the install of the William's Switching Power supply by adding some inline fuses for the coin door lights. In the last video (Part #2) we converted the coin door bulbs from AC to DC and in this video we'll explain why that happened using the switching power supply adapter from Arcade Shop.

The magnets on the coindoors are working when you power on the machine, the idea is to avoid people to insert coins with the machine off. The magnet will move a metal tab inside the coinmech allowing the coins to go into the cash box, if you try to insert a coin with the machine off the coin will go directly out of the coinmech to the return door. Sorry I'm from Spain and I don't know the correct tech words.

Two things about making the Mikey trick work on Wave 5: 1) You must collect all the humans on Wave 4, or they'll target a random human (not necessarily Mikey) when Wave 5 starts. 2) If you die, they will no longer be targeting Mikey when you respawn. So, if you catch 'em all on Wave 4, they'll target Mikey, unless and until you die. :)

And when two or more power supplies are running at the same time, it's not "all that voltage." It's all that CURRENT. The more electricity you deliver, the more CURRENT flow there is. Current is the amount, while voltage is the strength.

Hey John, great work on the followup video. A quick suggestion, since this is a custom fuse block that you have added I would recommend printing a label saying what type of fuse you are using and placing it next to the new fuse block. Since this info can not be found in the manual and if you or someone else needs to replace the fuse they can be sure that the fuse that is in there is the correct one. Just a thought.

As far as I can see...... You haven't disconnected the primary (110V AC in) of the old power supply transformer. You've just disconnected the secondary from the power supply PCB. So the transformer is still running....!!!! Great channel, keep it coming :)

John, in my machine, I kept the original Linear PS to power the coin door, while I have the same switching PS Kit for the PCB. The linear power supply has no load on the 5V so it does not pull any current. The only power/current draw the Linear supply will use is strictly for the Coin Door. I wanted to keep everything original on my machine, but add the more reliable 5V PS for the PCB.
@Johnsarcade
@Johnsarcade 7 жыл бұрын
Hey, Chuck! I thought about this but just didn't like the idea of that PS still running.

There is an argument for not putting the fuse on the "ground" wire to the coin door bulbs, as they will be sharing the same ground at the SMPS. So, if the +5V supply to one of the bulbs shorted to the chassis ground, then it still wouldn't pop the fuse. So yeah, usually best to just add separate fuses on each of the +5V supplies to the bulbs, as you've done in the vid. Or, just add one fuse to the +5V supply, then split that to each of the bulbs. I prefer the idea of just using the SMPS too. It's true that there wouldn't be any current drawn from the linear PSU (well, maybe a tiny amount), but it's nice to not have to worry about something else on there randomly shorting out.

Yes do not fuse on ground. This in case of a fault on the way to the load. Assuming the chassis earth ground is somehow bonded to the psu ground such a fault would be just as bad as no fuse.

the Williams coin mech accepters also require power to a small electromagnet incorporated into the coin mech that will when not powered causes all coins to be auto rejected when the game is not ready to except a coin that may also be a part of your mystery , surprised the adapter maker did not include documents on changes necessary to address this fault

+Mac Donalds I've had nothing but problems with the two 28" Polo 2s I have for my Time Crisis. The flybacks in particular seem to be really flaky. The 20" Polo in my JAMMA cab is on its way out too... I guess given their age they've done OK, but you look at the monitors in John's machines which are over a decade older than the Polos and they're clearly not as robust.

Hi John, I sold a Atari badlands last year and the guy I sold it to has lost interest in the machine, and he is willing to sell it back to me for the same price I sold it to him. Before I sold it to him I fixed the wiring and my kids and I loved it but at the time I needed the space. Quick question, I have an opportunity to put this game on location and do you think it would be a popular choice for a location? as I think driving games would be a great choice to share with people.

There's no such thing as an overall negative or positive voltage with AC. That doesn't make logical sense at all. And both AC and DC can have a ground line. Since AC is always alternating, it's positive just as often as it is negative. So for future reference AND for an annotation over every occurrence here, don't say "minus-..." or "negative 6.3 [volts] AC," because there's no such thing.
@Johnsarcade
@Johnsarcade 7 жыл бұрын
I read the sheet wrong. It looked like a "-" sign in front of the voltage. It was a "~". I need glasses.
@HelloKittyFanMan.
@HelloKittyFanMan. 7 жыл бұрын
Haha, but then... I'd think someone with enough techie would already know not to read that ~ as a -, simply because of the technicality. Hmm. Well anyway, that's why you can put an annotation over the top of the video everywhere you say that. Maybe something like, ''Negative AC? No such thing! What was I thinking?!" Right?

>He is worst then Old operators back in the day. That's absurd. Most "old operators back in the day" wouldn't have even left that machine as a Robotron. In '86 it would have been converted to e.g., Double Dragon. In '89 it would have been converted to e.g., Final Fight. In '91 it would have been converted to e.g., Street Fighter II, and so on. The original sideart was often hastily rattle-canned over with no prep work, wiring hacks were often of the "twist-n-tape" variety, lock bars were often installed over the coin doors, and control panels were often "Swiss-cheesed" to accommodate a different set of controls. John may not be an absolute purist, but he's a lot closer to one that most operators were. Of all the things I've seen people obsess over in this hobby, obsessing over having the original power supply is perhaps the most ridiculous. Replacing a linear power supply with a switch-mode power supply doesn't affect the gameplaying experience at all, nor does it change the external appearance of the cabinet. If 10 Robotrons were lined up, all powered on, some with linear power supplies and others with switch-mode power supplies, you wouldn't be able to tell which was which.
