The Turnout

Күн бұрын

Willow Rosenberg (played by the amazing Alyson Hannigan) started off normal but gained more and more power and control as Buffy The Vampire Slayer continued. This was always her ultimate goal, however, and it was in plain view from the beginning. In her life, her relationships, her friendships, it's all about power with Willow, even her ability to have power over her own urges.
In part two of our video essays on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The Turnout breaks down Willow's desire for power and control over everything in her life. This is a discussion of her motivations from early, geeky Willow to her falling for both Oz and Tara, later on to becoming Dark Willow, going cold turkey and then finally achieving her true power through acceptance.

It's really interesting to see Willow's descent into darkness and how it was foreshadowed even in the beginning. Definitely a fascinating character study.

right?!?!? she was always one of my favorite arches, and it all seems really random the first watch. but I've now watched it 7 or 8 times from front to back, and that illuminates a lot of stuff. Thanks for checking it out! the editing on this one took forever!

I get the desire for control, and to stand up for oneself perfectly well... her choices, however, really messed her up big time.

Great episode Eloy, I'm a huge Buffy Fan and I appreciate your take on Willow. She came a long way as the series progressed. She became one of the driving forces of the series it's self to the point she became the "Big Bad" and then a target of the first evil. Her story was just as important as Buffy's in some ways as she eventually crossed over with Angel to re-insoul him and return Faith to Sunnydale for the final battle. She even had a cute chemistry with Fred(which I loved). I just love how she was written. Joss Whedon and his team knew how to build world's out properly.

100% just as important as Buffy.

That trait in her is a solid sign that she's insecure: her need for controlling is a sign that she has little control over herself- and is thus weak... but in a real sense loving; as she deeply wants to protect her neighbors and to help them out.

For me the pivotal moment was when she cast the gypsy spell in Beginning Part 2. First understand the reason for the spell, vengeance. Jenny’s uncles speech is about vengeance and he does not care of the consequences or if it is evil. The family has given up redemption for revenge. This is the spell. Giles warns Willow that the spell may open darkness in Willow but the chance to be important and give Angel a soul is to tempting. The audience and the Scoobys want to restore the soul for the love with Buffy but we all forget the spell is based in darkness, vengeance, and human punishment for personal satisfaction. Once again, opposite to a Slayer. Willow shows her first bit of Dark Willow completing the spell and tells the gang she felt it go through here. Then over the next 2 seasons her attempts to have good spells fail and backfire but those with death or destruction work. Then in Something Blue she is recruited to be a vengeance demon. This would not be out of the blue but is done with someone ready, willing , and a able to the demons. Rewatch the scene of the Vengeance Demon offer. And I see Willow given some thought. She only rejects and goes back when she views Xander and the Scoobys in danger. Buffy would have said Hell No and been firm In her rejection. Buffy has moral clarity and Willow has institutional morality. Remember what Angel and Spike tell Buffy about the nature of Vampires. They reflect dominant characteristics of their human nature. Angel was a amoral narcissist who becomes a self pleasing sadistic killer out for pleasure. Spike was a hopeless romantic that Drusilla mixes sex, violence,lust, and love when turning him. This Spike is a sexually confused Vampire. So what was Doppelgänger Willow Vampire. Sadist,( can I Play with puppy?), controlling, evil leader, sexual, and street smart. So this is Willows Vampire nature so it means this is also a strong part of human Willlow. We loved the picked on lovable teen but unless you have a Moral center of deep love and forgiveness of people the you will succumb to vengeance and personal hatred of others. Willow was doomed to be like a Warren Or Johnathan but Buffy gave her a lifeline. Giles thought there was danger ahead but typically stayed out until too late.

I think I've recently understood something about Willow in season 1 and 3 in particular the cheating. Her family sucked, so did Xander's, they were both social outcasts. My theory is he did have romantic feelings for her but wanted a life boat, someone's above his "low station." Buffy thrust down to his group could easily lead to that obsession. More importantly Willow was brilliant and dedicated, she would surpass and leave him. Better a hot chick rejects you than your only real support in life. For Willow I think she wanted someone the world looked down on that loved her for her worst fear version of herself. It's why she wanted Xander. It's why when getting his lifeboat and a little candy that supposedly didn't make him feel different broke down those barriers she went for it. Oz made her feel special but wasn't from the same place. (Not an excuse of course but plausible) I also think it was part of her problem with Tara, Tara blossomed and found her voice, what if that made her slip away? Would she make her lose the one thing that gives her self esteem outside if relationships? I think that was the fear you talked about as much as addiction. Glad she overcame it. That last moment in her progress during recovery really felt the old Willow, like she found peace. Hopefully I worded that well. Great video.

Glad you liked it! And yeah I got what you’re saying. In season 1-3 too, though, we have to give the benefit of the doubt and say they were teens and teens follow hormones sometimes. The cheating was a stupid thing to do and even they realized it once they were caught. I was happy they never mentioned it again 😂

one thing I do disagree with separate from all the other stuff. I always felt that Willow refused the sheet at the end more do to irritation than empowerment. Like she wasn't reliving that trauma right then. When did she her get pissed off about things a few times early in the series after all and it could make her do things she wouldn't normally, like yelling at Giles and Angel

I totally buy Willow wanting control, but the big problem with season 6 was it showed her giving up control for power. Rack wasn't a guy she should have ever trusted

Season 6 was rock bottom for a lot of the characters. Bad but also understandable choices were made.

well, let's take the example we're talking about here. Willow going to Rack. Sure, on the surface it doesn't make sense. But look at the events that brought her there. Turning Amy back from being a Rat was the main catalyst. This is a witch that she's looked up too forever, and finally she thought she's surpassed Amy (she couldn't turn herself back, right?) and it turns out that Amy still knew more than her. Amy tells her... Rack is how. Willow's seeking control comes with seeking power, and well, I could give up a little bit of control to amass WAY more power and then be able to get that control back, right? but it's a slippery slope.
@JBar
@JBar 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheTurnout I honestly never thought she looked up to Amy. I mean if she looked up to Amy then why didn't she reach out to her at all during the summer between seasons two and three? I mean obviously Amy couldn't turn herself back. She couldn't cast magic as a rat. Hell in the scene in the Bronze Amy seems to be trying to impress Willow to me. To me the control is the main goal. Power is a side effect. Upgrading spells like say the time she made some magic lights in season 5 is about testing herself and refusing to accept limits. I view it as a continuation of her hacker identity from the early seasons, which never actually gained her anything personally And to be quite honest, Amy knowing Rack doesn't make sense to me. I don't buy him in Wilkins Sunnydale. Stoned magic users are potentially a little to chaotic. Plus, she was ratted in the middle of a witch hunt. If he was there why not try to hide out with him?
@TheTurnout
@TheTurnout 2 жыл бұрын
In my view, she saw the power Amy held and wanted it, and that's why she started down that path. Amy was the start of it all. As for Rack... if he actually cared about any of the witches he held under his sway, then sure, maybe he would have opened his doors for a safe haven. But more likely, it's like drug dealers if they hear about police raids coming: they shut down shop, close the doors, and hold tight until the storm passes.
