nomibe2911 I mean, its hard to back that statement with facts, I suppose we don’t know how competitive it was, but like any game, there definitely was, and still is, competition, and competitiveness always follows. I would say the 80’s/90’s was the height of competitiveness, with a lot of rules trying to be implemented into the game to stop so much of the physicality that thrived off of the overly competitive spirit. You would get deliberate elbows flying into skulls, faces, necks, chests, anywhere it would really rattle someones cage. Just because you didn’t want to give up easy shots. Fair enough but the dirty actions weren’t necessary, unless you wanted to win. Pride, Competitiveness, you can never say there wasn’t any competitiveness, but I honestly think the 60’s were not AS competitive.

I agree! He was an extraordinary athlete. Some of the stories about the various things he did were unbelievable. He could palm a bowling ball without putting his fingers in the holes. High jumping close to 7' using the scissors kick, triple jump, shot put, etc. He would have been the leading scorer if he had played as long as Kareem. Never fouling out of a game, dunking from the foul line, breaking a players foot after dunking, and the ball hit the opponents foot. Wilt was probably related to Hercules. I did here that he had a house on Mt. Olympus and use to have dinner with Zeus. G.O.A.T. 1. Wilt, 2. Jabbar, 3. Jordan, 4. Lebron, 5. Kobe. @MDO If Wilt were playing today, I'm certain he would neutralize the three point shooting on which so many teams rely. Watch the vids in slo-mo of him blocking. Most of them were short range and he'd jump up just as the shot was released and still get the block. Threes take a lot longer to get to the basket so he'd be able to just position himself near the basket and either catch the ball or block it. And being the smart player he was, never goal tend.

When Wilt was angry, he took over games completely. For example, Kareem pissed off Wilt for what Wilt felt was a cheap shot to his teammate Happy Hairston under the basket while Hairston lay on the floor - Wilt was super pissed and a ref had to step between Wilt and Kareem. Wilt was essentially playing on one good knee after a nasty knee cap injury sustained in '69 but he still took over the game in the 4th and dominated Kareem. The Lakers won that game, the playoff series, and Wilt went on to be the finals MVP, leading the Lakers to the chip. True story.

Wilt bodies Gus Johnson out of the way at 2:02 for a layup, tries to dunk the ball onto Gus's head at 6:06, and then throws Gus off of the court at 6:48. That's the same Gus Johnson that had his shoulder dislocated by Wilt when he tried to dunk on Chamberlain a couple years earlier. He had showed Wilt up on a slam. When he tried to do it a 2nd time, Wilt blocked the dunk by palming it and then ramming it right back into Johnson. Clean block. Wilt still palming the ball as they carried Gus off on a stretcher. Only man ever to have his shoulder dislocated on a blocked dunk attempt. When Johnson got out of the hospital, he was asked if he'd try it again? He said absolutely! When Wilt got word of Johnson's comment, he said, "tell him I said that's a good way to lose an arm".

The story of Wilts life. He played a stellar game, but the West lost. It is my contention that, if the coach had told Wilt to start scoring big that 4th quarter, the outcome would have been very different. I can see where it was good that Wilt was asked to concentrate mostly on rebounding and defense, but they also hobbled the greatest scorer, ever in the league, when he was asked to score. He should have been turned loose to score more than he was. He would have won at least 2 more championships if that had happened, I believe.
