Occasionally you can keep a low straight and play it out in the back end of a hand. I surprised my opponent by playing a A23 straight off a 20 count recently. Great video!

There is or was one how-to video on cribbage on KZfaq which mentioned keeping score with pen and paper. I would not recommend this. You can pick up a cribbage board with pegs for less than $20 online.
