Shooting my new (old) Winchester 1897 pump shotgun. This was an old take-down field gun that was cut to riot length sometime before I bought it.

Pretty good slam fire. Finally got one a couple weeks ago and slam fired for the first time. I’m an expert shooter and it still caught me by surprise how difficult it is to control recoil and keep your hand on the pump while slam firing. Mine has a wobbly pump which probably didn’t help. It’s a serious challenge to keep the muzzle stable while doing it

I have a question,how does this shotgun fires very fast?Can other modern pump shotgun shoot as fast as this as well?
@PhoenixPhart3 жыл бұрын
This shotgun doesn't have a trigger disconnect so the hammer will drop as soon as it's back in battery meaning it'll shoot as fast as you can pump it if you hold the trigger down. Many modern shotguns aren't able to slamfire, but I do know the recent Chinese 1897 clones are capable of it
@deus03792 жыл бұрын
To simplify it, Notice how whenever a new round is chambered, the hammer flies forward pretty much instantly? If you werent pulling the trigger, the hammer would remain (which is obvious). Imo, i dont know much about the 97, but it's one of the most beautiful shotguns ever manufactured, an extremely practical and futuristic design of it's time.

what kind of ammo do you shoot, I was told to use low brass, but I saw you had buckshoot, what make and is it low brass? looking to feed mine other than birdshot
@PhoenixPhart3 жыл бұрын
I've shot buckshot out of this gun no problem, just make sure your chamber length isn't shorter than the fired shell case. Also, the high/low brass nomenclature is a misnomer nowadays with modern cartridges: the height of the head really makes no ballistic differences. It's probably better to look at the velocity information on the box.

Dax Marshall they stopped producing these shotguns in the mid 50s but you might get lucky at an auction or by placing for a special order. Also depends on what state you're from since some states are very gun restrictive for example California.

Only if you want to shoot it for the last time. I highly would recommend against shooting shells longer than the chamber length as this would cause over pressure in the chamber and could rupture your barrel.

I know these guns very very very well and i can tell u this,compared to a modern Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870,the action of these guns is bullet proof x3 vs the modern guns,they are made soo super strong in terms of action...I am sure the action of a 1897 can handle a .50bmg recoil without any problem 1000x over do that with with a modern shotgun like a mossberg or remington that work with a lug that pops up and locks the bolt and barrel....These guns are build to last thats why they are around after lile 100 years of service,John Browning made guns that worked and lasted..

50 bmg will tear gun apart lol
@Berniessen4 жыл бұрын
@@rayd6905 it will break in stock form but the design can handle it i mean if u scale it up a bit,cause compared to a locking block that raises from the bolt into the barrel/receiver this design is much stronger,they are old and weird looking with the bolt that flys out of the back of the receiver and the carrier that hangs out of the bottom of the gun,but they are super strong guns in terms of action.
@rayd69054 жыл бұрын
@@Berniessen you sound dumb as fuck it will tear that gauge in two pieces lol a 50 bmg could go thru 4 hi pints on a video I saw and it has alot or metal
@Berniessen4 жыл бұрын
@@rayd6905 Its really weird to see a man brag about the .50 will break this and that.... If ure the gun gun expert u know the .50 has one of the slowest burning powders u can buy or a power thats super slow burning and rarely see for caliber as .30-06 this means the recoil is not a kick as in terms fast burning powder like a .223 anyways. If u have a bit of technical skills and u know how a 1893/1897 locks the action u know that the shell pushes against the bolt and the bolt is locked by the carrier witch is mostly made from solid steel,u cant compress solid steel atleast i am not aware u can compress solid steel the recoil force is tranferd to the receiver witch is solid steel in the part the carrier moves in.... The only weak spot would be the receiver if u scale that up a little bit to make sure a 1897 willl handle a .50 bmg in fact i am sure a 1893 winchester,yes the gun that has the reputation to be weak will handle the recoil for sure. If a simple bolt action can hold the .50 a 1893/1897 can for sure if u scale up the receiver. U know how guns work then u dont talk like a 16 year old kid
