Don't let your airport get RUINED! Speak out and save lives!
In this video, we explore the placement of a wind turbine project in close proximity to the Oyen Municipal Airport, and how the project now impacts the ability for medevac flights to safely function from the only nearby town with a hospital.
My goal is to spread awareness about issues like this that happen to airports throughout the world and impact aviation. I will also be speaking out to urge aviation authorities to amend the NOTAM for this airport in an attempt to prevent a fatal incident.
Follow me on a flight that takes us there to examine what went wrong, and explore the beauty of the prairie landscapes along the way!

Local PPL to that area. I just wanted to drop a thank you for your level of professionalism in your videos. I’ve been wanting to take people up to see those things first hand but your video just saved me a lot of 100LL It’s another thing worth noting that you were doing this in the winter, when aircraft performance is significantly higher. On a hot summer day those windmills might be harder to climb past for people with poor performing planes.

Absolutely! Flying during summer with a passenger at full gross weight, my Tomahawk would be climbing at a fraction of what that video showed

There have been a couple times when I've landed there in July in my flybaby. 250fpm climb on a good cold day lol. Not to mention on a 37°C day when density altitude was crazy high. Sucks that there isn't any fuel there either...

Wonderful Video. Brings back so many wonderful memories of my Dad and I flying in and out of Oyen during his piloting days in the late 70's. Thanks so much for the concern of the Medivac flights. We need the hospitlal to maintane the Emergency Room support. Please keep uploading video's

Yes, the Big Country hospital has had enough struggles as it is without the added pressure from these wind turbines stacking up

Hey great video!! I was just talking to my dad about those windmills. Growing up near Oyen and seeing TMZ up in the air an aircraft I did most of my private and commercial on is pretty awesome. I’ve flown Medevac into Oyen early in my aviation career and I’m shocked that no one in the area had the foresight to stop building those windmills on the approach and departure path of a runway. Good luck with your aviation pursuits and feel free to reach out if you need any help.

Awesome Doug! Thank you. My current goal is getting publications ironed out with Nav Canada so these wind turbines are documented properly. I'm making some headway. The NOTAM was just updated but I don't think it was done well enough- it still doesn't specifically address the ones in the runway path.

There was the lady cargo pilot in Idaho who rapped the smoke stack and Dan Gryder of Probable Cause said these conflicts of infrastructure and airport proximate airspace should not be occurring. Ask the aviation experts before erecting infrastructure and come up with safe alternatives . Lives depend on it - especially when air medical must have access to the airport at all times and in all weather scenarios .

That's the exact scenario I have in my head when I think of obstacles too close to runways. That was a very tragic incident

Im a pilot as well. My in laws are from Oyen, and my mom grew up in bow island. Love this video. You have another pilot here in your tool bag to utilize as a witness to these turbine placements. Absolutely inconsiderate. But even with the super anemic climb of my ultralight, I can still clear the tips. But definitely poor planning.

@Planes With Perry I did for about 2 years. A friend of mine bought it and is restoring it. It won't have the red barron color scheme anymore as it's being recovered and such. Which kinda sucks but it's his plane now 😀

Thanks for this - seem like this is an issue that should have been taken seriously and AUC would have had a responsibility to have the placement of those specific turbines moved to a safer place. Thanks also for the view of the badlands, a perfect example of "Pristine Viewscape" as in the recent AUC inquiry comment matrix.

They should be lit, obviously, and shown on the sectional, just like every tall radio tower and so on, but they shouldn't be an impediment since they are quite close to the ground compared to how far they are away. I erected a 440 foot tower 4.8NM away from a pretty busy airport but the base of that tower is 400 feet higher than the runway altitude, so its far taller than this situation. At one point there were actually three towers and 4 turbines in that immediate area. It hasn't been a problem and it was erected over 13 years ago. We never light the blade tips. It's a lightning protection and maintenance issue. Can't really do it.

Thank you for the info 👍 at this point I'm trying to get the NOTAM amended to specifically address those 2 that are directly in the runway path. It's a bit of a process so far!

@@planeswithperry I've been thinking about this and I have some suggestions. First, the turbines don't need a NOTAM. They are an obstruction and you don't need a NOTAM for that. You need it marked on the sectional (and propagated through to all the other maps used). You need a NOTAM because they aren't lit. That's what the NOTAM should say. Then they need to get lit. At least in the US, they could never have been erected without avoidance lighting. I don't know the rules there but they should be lit, rules or no. Once lit, there's no need for a NOTAM if they are on the maps. My opinion.
@planeswithperry
@planeswithperry Жыл бұрын
In Canada they still list obstructions close to airports in the NOTAMs. My home airport has a lit antenna that is further from the airport than the distance of the wind turbines in the video and it even has its own NOTAM mentioning that specific antenna. I'm in contact with Nav Canada (they provide our ATC, other flight services, and our publications). I'm hoping a resolution can be met.

No pilot. Is there an exclusion zone around airports? Seems a shocking lack of a Hazop regarding the turbine placement. Have you contacted the power company? Has there been any follow up from the province or feds? Poor Hazard Assessment!

My question IS, how the hell did these wind turbines in that location get approved? There is no way they should have been allowed in the flight path, it's not as if there is no available land out here. Someone should have to explain why this was approved, the structures in question should be not operated until a full review is done at the very least. Somebody was asleep at the wheel.
@planeswithperry
@planeswithperry Жыл бұрын
That might be the case. From what I have read in the documents of various stages, the original plans called for a smaller turbine. There was a last minute change to having fewer turbines but a much larger model. I need to confirm with Transport Canada that the larger model was approved by them. If not, there may be a serious issue unfolding.

I think at the very least there will need to be updated publications (sectional chart, NOTAM, maybe an amendment to the Canada Flight Supplement), and proper lighting etc.
