My dad's lake place in northern Wisconsin has that same material on the entire house, trim and all. I think all the wood fibers are so well encapsulated in resin that it's super resilient to moisture and not prone to swelling at all. It's a nice material, not only easier to build and shape with conventional wood tools but also cheaper than cementitious siding products he had initally been considering. It has a nice aesthetic appearance of painted wood without the maintenance of that too. That place is 8 years old now and it all still looks like it did in 2015 when it was built.

Still looks good. You have quite an overhang there also, so I'm guessing the only way water could get to it is if it blows in.

I used the exact same product for the corner trim on my shed, built eight years ago. It's held up just fine and is even more exposed to the rain (in Oregon!). It's a good, stable product designed to be outdoors, unlike regular OSB.

I appreciate the update, as I'm always interested in how such repairs hold up to weather. Now I don't know what part of the country you live in, but "this year" is quickly ending in cold weather here. Just put the painting off til "next year" ha ha.

I would never go back to wood vs cementitious products. Lasts forever and holds paint very well as expansion and contraction is minimal. Same for plaster vs drywall.

Love this job and really like your channel. How has your energy bill been since you put on exterior insulation?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 2 ай бұрын
It is really so hard to compare year over year bills because the weather is never the same each season. I believe we can see a comfort level difference though so there has to be a energy difference.

I copied you for a garage window it worked out great, i used cheap caulk, don’t think i have much of a water problem, but i know water leaked, so spend an extra 5 bucks and get a good caulk

An opinion is not a fact. No matter how much you think it is. Many will tell you what you're doing is wrong. Some will claim to have years of experience in the field. Then how is it that 5 years later they're wrong?

Is it good to knock the corner off (chamfer/round) trim like that before painting to avoid a thin spot? I like to remove sharp edges but sometimes think I'm doing more harm than good by removing the factory primer. Yeah, I wouldn't have guessed an MDF product to make it 5 years outdoors. Thank you for the update :)
@East7West9
@East7West9 7 ай бұрын
yes, breaking the corner by minimum 1/64" and max 1/32" (more is fine, just less aesthetic maybe) is a proven way to avoid pull away from paint on sharp corners. Factory primer removal won't be big enough to affect topcoat... you'd have to chamfer a good 1/4" before it's going to flake.

Also to be clear this is not MDF, this is more like OSB but with what seems like much more resin/glue.

Why not a pvc board or concrete
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 7 ай бұрын
Concrete is not as nice to work with ,especially for what I was doing and I was afraid that painting PVC such a dark colour would cause more issues in the hot sun.
