This time at camp, I finish the shelter build by finally adding the long awaited canvas tarp roof. I started the day off with collecting eight long poplar tree saplings, and after dragging them back to camp using my leather belt, I measured and cut them down to length with my axe and knife, and tied them in place on the frame making sure to trim their ends flush with the walls using my bucksaw. After the bracing was finished, I unfolded and dragged the waxed canvas tarp onto the shelter and tacked it down with a few galvanized nails that could be rotated if needed, making the tarp removable for the days I am away from camp. The extra bracing should make the shelter capable of holding a heavy snow load, and assuming a bear doesn't decide to climb on it like my past camps, the tarp should hold up well to everything that is thrown at it.
Thanks for watching,
- Nicholas

It's pretty satisfying to see this shelter finished! All that's left is a fire-pit and heat reflector, and the camp is ready to use. Don't forget to drop a like if you enjoyed, and give me some feedback on what you'd like to see in my videos next. Thanks for watching, - Nicholas

Very nice. I have to say that you either built the shelter knowing the size of the tarp you had, or had a custom tarp made for the size of the shelter you built. It fits perfectly either way...

Nice job Nicolas 👍🏽👍🏽 So will this b a part-time hunt shelter as well as film hang out ??? You could also add a short tarp right off the top and hang it out to the front and create like a patio and if got yourself a hat full of fire you could keep it underneath that front porch without burning any holes you wouldn't have to worry about the Sparks depending on what you're putting in there to burn have yourself a nice little hang out even when it's drizzly and nasty and foggy out 🤠

Thank you! I may use it for some small game hunting, grouse or hare, but unfortunately the camp isn't in the best spot for hunting in general. It's one of the reasons I almost decided not to finish it. Great ideas though!

Awesome shelter! : ) I’m always amazed with these shelter creations! Lots of imagination and crafting skills go into these builds. I am curious as to why your tarp covering was not wide enough to provide some, maybe 6”-12”, overlap down the sloping sides and long enough to provide possibly a 1’-2’ overhang at the top? An additional 1’-2’ weather-drip, down-sloping eave along the peak would have been beneficial. Just my thoughts, but I could be wrong.
@wituikbws
@wituikbws Жыл бұрын
Thank you! When I built the shelter I sized it to the tarp I had on hand, which is the one shown in the video. If I had made the shelter any skinnier to add room for an overlap (which is a good idea), I wouldn't be able to fit laying down inside. The next camp I build, I'll use a different sized tarp so I'm able to do things like that 👍

Why did you pick that location out in the open rather than underneath the trees
@wituikbws
@wituikbws Жыл бұрын
The majority of the trees here (lodgepole pine) offer little protection from anything, so there was really no benefit to being in them. The spruce are the best to be in, but they only grow alongside muskeg, so not really ideal area to camp especially in mosquito season

Great video as always! Have you tried using your bowsaw in such a way that you reach through the loop with your stick-holding hand, and grasp the stick that way? It reduces the chance of getting cut by the blade.

Just discovered your channel, gotta say your living my dream, I was born and raised in south eastern United States, but my heart has always longed for snow capped mountains and northern lights , I was born a century too late for sure , awesome job on the shelter , a little advice on the next one , on your roof beams run them reverse next time , instead of your horizontal beams being on top closest to the tarp , run the vertical beams last , in one of your other videos when the snow builds up on the roof you get some leaking, this is due to the horizontal beams being on top the snow packs down the tarp causing troughs in the tarp which in turn heat up with your fire in front of your shelter causing the snow to melt and build up and sit there which causes them to leak , putting the vertical beams on top closest to the tarp prevent this allowing the melting snow to run down with no resistance. Hope that makes sense. Also I’ve noticed your not carrying a long gun anymore in some of the newer ones . Is this due to to the new gun laws in Canada? Keep it up man awesome channel. God bless .
