Important - This video is for entertainment only. It is not intended for instruction and should not be used for any training purpose.
In February, I flew a couple for Angel Flight West. They were returning home to Laramie, WY after participating in a clinical trial in Seattle. As is common on these longer missions, AFW split the flight up into two legs. I flew the first leg from Renton to Boise and another pilot flew the remaining leg from Boise to Laramie. The flight went really well and the passengers were great to fly with. This video documents the return flight from Boise to Renton.
The majority of the flight was in beautiful, chilly VFR winter conditions however the arrival back into the Seattle area had us flying through some IMC conditions. We also picked up a little icing. I’ve tried to include a lot of the IFR communications. I know many of the viewers enjoy seeing (and hearing) what it is like to fly one of these IFR cross country flights. I hope you enjoy it. I’m always happy to hear ways I can improve these videos and make them more useful.
For more information on Angel Flight West, please check out angelflightwest.org. If you are a pilot and have your own plane or have access to a rental (either is fine!) please consider signing up. The organization is always looking for qualified new pilots:

Thanks Adam and welcome to Seattle! Where you at Blue Line in NC? That was where 62DL had its pre-buy inspection before come to Seattle. I'd be happy to connect - are you on IG? I'm easy to find there.

I'm curious to see a close up of the logbook template you are frequently using to log flight information. Could you share that?

Always fun to tag along with you. Question, I noticed that ATC had you at 2000 to cross LUTSY where the plate shows 2100 till LUTSY then down to 2000 to WIBAT. I'm wondering why.

Hi Dave - Really good question. I've seen this on a few approaches and definitely wondered about it myself in the past. My understanding is that if I was flying the approach without radar vectors eg starting from WUNVA to LUTSY, I would need to be at 2100 prior to LUTSY. However since I am being radar vectored, I am not on the approach until I am on the "straight-in" LUTSY to WIBAT leg which is 2000. So long as ATC can vector me at 2000 in that area, then they can get me down to 2000 before I reach the approach. ATC does say "cleared straight-in RNAV Z 16". The straight-in altitude is 2000. Others may have some added details on this.

@@twmba65 Thanks - that makes as much sense as anything I have seen or heard. There is no MVA on the chart, but the MSA is 7K so it is safe obstruction wise. I have asked Bruce Williams the same question on the RNAV Z approach to KBFI and he says that ATC has been doing that for a while. Makes one wonder.

@@wheelerdavea Once again my understanding only but I believe approach MVAs are typically not published. Good question for a local controller what the MVAs in that area are!
