I loved the concept of Disney's WISH..... but I just couldn't get past the SONGS!!! They're so clunky!!!
Join me as I react to watching WISH for the first time! While the movie had its moments, the songs were just trash. Don't miss my honest review!
Wish is a 2023 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It was directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn (in her feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore. The art style combines computer animation with the look of traditional animation. The film stars the voices of Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, Angelique Cabral, Victor Garber, Natasha Rothwell, Jennifer Kumiyama, Harvey Guillén, Evan Peters, Ramy Youssef, and Jon Rudnitsky. The story focuses on a 17-year-old girl named Asha (DeBose) in the Kingdom of Rosas, who makes a passionate plea to the stars in a moment of need, leading her to meet a living, magic star which has fallen from the sky, and together they face up to the kingdom's dubious ruler, Magnifico (Pine).

The movie came out on Disney’s 100th anniversary, so they included lots of references to past Disney movies. The seven friends actually are supposed to reference the seven dwarves from Snow White

There's a headcanon trending on Tumblr that the creative team on this movie was indirectly calling out the streaming services and studios for withholding/cancelling shows in their prime, as well as movies we'll never see. Wishes = canceled shows or movies. Remember, this movie was first thought of in 2018.

So, on the subject of the songs, a bunch of people have pointed out that the main issue with them is the lyrics. This is because, instead of hiring someone to write the songs who has a background in musical theater like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Robert Lopez and Alan Menken they instead hired two people whose backgrounds are in writing/producing pop music: Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice. The problem with this is that songs in a musical are meant to expand on characters and progress the plot, whereas pop songs (while they can have deeper meanings) are mostly just concerned with sounding peppy and good in the moment. I don't want to say that these people aren't genuinely talented but I feel like they were given a task that isn't suited to their particular talents. For me personally, I like the songs (most of them anyway) but in the context of the story they don't do too much to progress the story or tell us something about the characters that isn't already given to us during conversations or the intro. Overall, I still enjoyed my time with Wish but I admit, it had a lot of missed potential, especially knowing the behind-the-scenes story.

The song At All Cost was originally meant to be a love song between Asha and the star, which was originally supposed to be a star BOY but they wanted the cute little star for merch purposes. They just changed the lyrics from “I will love you at all cost” to “I will protect you at all cost” and it’s so obvious it’s supposed to be a love song. Check out the demo version performed by Julia Michaels. It’s my favorite song from the soundtrack album 🥰 the little breathy “wow” right before Asha’s part kicks in always gives me chills

I personally find Wish wasn't bad. It just felt very mediocre considering what Disney was trying to make it out to be. Its even worse because what the original idea for Wish was would've been sooo much better 😭The star boy would've been Asha's love interest and iirc, the song At All Costs was supposed to be a love song between them (or at least thats what the demo makes it sound like- don't quote me on it)

@@moon7shinev150 Exactly! Like I would’ve loved a little romance in the movie. Even if it was a bit of a star-crossed lovers situation (pun not intended 🤣) either at first or the whole way through if they would’ve kept star leaving in the end.

That’s hair. I like the concept. But going back to the traditional 2D would have been awesome! Especially for the creators/animators who may not get as much work!

I loved that this movie was like the "Origin story" of 2 side charactes, The Fairy Godmother and the Magic Mirror from Sniw white. I mean when Magnifico was beeing sucked into the scepter you could see the mask that appears in the og movie

Just Easter eggs. Not “origin stories” at all. It’s like when you see scars skinned head in Hercules, doesn’t mean that’s what happened to scar. Or when you see sully from monsters inc in the witches hut in brave. They are Easter eggs.. little cameos that have no actual connection between films.

Interesting take on this, Stephanie. Like you, I didn’t expect much; only the fact that, yes, this one is commemorating 100 years of Disney, hence the age of Asha’s grandfather that also serves as a reference. I believe that you are, by far, the only one who struggled with the songs written for this film. Personally, I can take it or leave it since it has its moments. “At All Costs” has that lullaby vibe of how the lyrics are shown, like “You’ll Be In My Heart” by Phil Colins from Tarzan. “You’re A Star” shows that we have the capability of making our dreams a reality, which explains why everyone felt alive after they reclaim it from the king. “This is the Thanks I Get” is definitely very upbeat for a villain song. I was vibing with “What I Know Now” with those drumbeats and everything. Last but not least, the “This Wish” reprise when confronting King Magnífico was their way of saying, “We’ll determine our own destiny.” Nevertheless, I appreciate your honesty and for that, I respect your opinion since the direction could’ve been different but alas, the decision has been made and we must live with that. I would like the movie more if I didn’t know about all the behind the scenes cut content they had. What the song At All Costs was truly meant for… it really breaks my heart that it’s so obvious the corporate execs at Disney had their metaphorical boot on the real creatives’ necks. The movie could’ve been so much more than it was. Star boy looks like literal perfection as a Disney character, a cute boy love interest that can fly like Peter Pan and can magically transform into cute critters at whim, as well as the little star that’s also in the movie for merch purposes could’ve been one of the forms he took. The queen being a villain along with the king, creating the most dynamic looking villain couple, which we’ve never had a true villain couple in Disney before. And they had Chris Pratt RIGHT THERE to play star boy, who would be a very similar to another popular animated character Jack Frost. 😩 the movie practically writes itself but they are too afraid to do romance for some reason these days. most popular Disney IP’s have romance in them, and I really WISH WISH WISH they’d go back to their roots truly. Let the creative team cook ffs the people in charge of Disney right now are so incompetent it makes me so mad tbh. Who was in charge during the renaissance? 😭 Sorry for the rant

Yeah, the thing about the songs... the lyrics are absolute trash, especially "I'm a Star" (my least favorite song in the film) like, "what out world, here I are?" or "when it comes to the universe, we're all shareholders. Get that to your system, solar!" or "here's a fun allegory, that gets me excitatory" It makes me feel indifferent because the instrumental sounds nice, but the lyrics are not it. The only song that I actually liked was "At All Costs". Gave me chills.

I really wish (no pun intended) they had taken advantage of how unique their villain was in this movie. If you look at it... he is the HERO of a Disney movie we never saw. He lost his family (like most Disney protagonists) and he struggled to become a sorcerer... found the love of his life, developed a community to keep people safe and lived "happily ever after" However... instead of becoming evil, power-mad or the usual villain agendas... Magnifico's benevolence became twisted and he started insisting on people praising him for the good he did - so his heroism for altruism turned selfish... and his selfishness had him turn to the book which corrupted him further. I really wish they gave him a chance to redeem himself back on the path.... because one of my favorite scenes was when he first went to the book and his wife stopped him and he LISTENED to her. I'm fine with him in the doghouse by the end of the movie... but if his wife's love could have gotten him to wake up would have been a nice part of the ending... or even her getting him back to being the hero he once was. I didn't think the movie was bad... just lackluster... it really needed a bit of work toward being a better movie... I liked most of the songs better than you did... but the "you're a star" song was my least favorite... and it's a shame, because it was the CRUX of the resolution (where she realized that they were all made of the same stuff as the stars and therefore she could wish upon them as she wished upon a star)

The animation of this is really great and the character designs are good. I think the problem was the songs it felt like it was made as a pop overflow instead of a theatre or broadway overflow. What i mean by that is when you hear some of the past Disney songs is that it has a theatre or broadway story quality to it where as Wish it feels like the songs are mostly felt like Pop songs that meant to be on the Radio with a strong hook and had no story to it. Thats just my observation. 😁😁

"Don't get the scary dangerous book out." While there is a lack of lyrics in "I'm a Star" (other than the title of the song), I still think it's a fun song and sequence. 11:42 When I saw this in theaters with my mom, when Magnifico was brewing the potion in his evil lair (I was trying to name off as many nods to other Disney movies as I could, or at least vibes I got from other films), I named off, "Evil Queen" but I was just saying that cause he was brewing a potion in his evil lair, but then I noticed the poison apple with the green skull face on it and the skull with a candle on it.

Honestly I vastly preferred Magnifico over Asha in this movie. He had a logical point about not granting dangerous or vague wishes, but then the movie never goes into what would happen if a wish like that was granted. Asha was so sure that every wish was good, but this was never challenged. Magnifico could've been headstrong and antagonistic, but for this sort of plot he would've been better as a misguided person rather than flat out evil. Cuz at the end of the day his society was still crime free and rent free and apparently no one was poor.

No. The hate is Definitely warranted because the whole reason why this movie is trash is because of Corporate Disney messing with the Production. The Concept for this movie was Such an Outstanding display until the Hire-up wanted them to scrap it and have something “Generic”. It literally sends a message that “we don’t have to try anymore! We still make money, even if it’s trash”….a Stain On Their animation legacy. Which would only grow With this mindset.

Imo the only good song in this movie is At All Costs, and specifically the DEMO version where it's an actual love song and not some intimate musical number about promising to protect wishes.

Even if a disney movie is a flop or bomb there is like a 90% chance it will become a cult classic like Atlantis or Treasure planet. Give it like a decade and people won’t shut up about this movie.

Maybe it's just me who focused more on the melodies and not the lyrics but I thought the songs weren't all that bad. I can be pretty easily entertained by music though and I only listened to them once so maybe I need to listen to them again to have an official opinion on them. Anyways, I was pretty interested in this movie cause I really like Ariana DeBose and her singing projects. I thought the movie wasn't bad. I liked the animation style idea with mixing the 2D with the 3D, it had a decent story and again, love Ariana DeBose so it was fun hearing her voice a Disney character.

Yes, this movie was meant to be referential, in honor of Disney's 100th Anniversary, but some of it I didn't care for. I didn't like the gross-out humor. They could've done without the guy sneezing on the cookie and the other guy eating it. The songs felt more like pop songs, than songs that were meant to be timeless. Otherwise, parts of it were cute and endearing, mostly the scenes with Valentino and Star. But there are other Disney movies that I'd much rather prefer.

The movie is ok to me, i like the animation and the music BUT the rest is not good. Valentino the goat NEVER says anything funny, also an adult voice coming from a baby goat is weird AND he does nothing to help Asha defeat the villain. Not distracting him so she can attack like Mushu did for Mulan or charging at him like Simba did with Scar or punching him like Hercules. The animal is a bit cute but really useless 🙁 Asha's friends are not memorable or charming. They are a reference to the 7 dwarves... that's it! Only Simon and the Doc girl are developped. I can't remember any of their names, favorite food or anything interresting about them. Magnifico became evil out of nowhere. First he wanted to protect the wishes then uses a magic book to be more powerful? He's already a king AND a sorcerer, why does he need more power? That makes no sense 🤨 The songs have good rhytme but terrible lyrics. I can't believe a profesional songwriter thinks that '' Here i are! '' and '' Get that in your system. '' are great lyrics. They either make no sense or are cringey. Also, pop music doesn't go AT ALL in a medieval world full of castles, horses and magic. I don't hate Wish but don't love it either. It's a 5|10 for me. Not sure i will rewatch it a hundred times like for Lilo and Stich, Hercules, Atlantis, Treasure planet or Aladdin.
