Join me for a walk around the delightful South Yorkshire town of Wombwell, on a very, very foggy Sunday morning. Traditionally a coal mining town, Wombwell rose dramatically in the late 19th century, but is home to landmarks and history that go back even further.
On our walk around town, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including the Old Town Hall, Wombwell Library, Wombwell Working Men's Club, Wombwell Police Station, St. Mary's Church, The Horseshoe Pub, Wombwell High Street, Wombwell Cemetery and Wombwell Operatic Centre.

Fun fact, at the beginning of your video, you showed the wombwell library. you see that place next door called W,Cs bar. The W.C does not stand for william and carol, it really does stand for water closet, as in, that used to be a very old dark and grotty public toilet. Yuk, oh and you know that massive police station, when i was a kid in the 70s, that was where the funfair was held (you know, dodgems and toffee apples thats sort of thing). the best place in wombwell for a good night out, was just as you turned onto church street, its now called NU--well but in my day, that was a venue called the Reform club, (70s) cheap beer and live bands. Brilliant place, and they weren't all that bothered on you proving you were 18 either. :-) I always wondered "why the unicorn" the main high school in wombwell, which i went to, (which has been knocked down now) we had the unicorn school badge, on our blazers.

It used to be a good blend of industry, play, along with a busy thriving shopping centre. Next to the Town Hall was the bigger market, the other, across the road, between the Prince and the old butchers, which is now a pub called the Butchers, for some reason. The film was close to it when you viewed the clock and spire. The markets were always busy, and nearby Barnsley was I believe the biggest outdoor market in the UK, so lots of deference when they put a lot of it under cover. I recall trudging around it in the 60's, usually in weather like this on this video, wet and damp. Back then we had real winters too, with plenty of snow from November. Close to the police station, on the same side, is the old one, a stone house, which was close to another theatre, which I've been in, and is still going to my knowledge. The current police station sits upon ground where there was a very large second cinema, perhaps illustrating the wealth and attraction of the town, for it has a number of satellite villages who used to use Wombwell to shop, drink, take in a movie, and bank. In fact, the last time I visited, the locals were fighting to keep the last major bank open, as with the decline of the village after the strike, many facilities have closed, giving way to cheap shops and such like. The second cinema, which was mentioned in the film, is now owned by the local Credit Union, who moved from the middle of the High Street. Before the new police station was built, the land became empty land for a time, and so some large feasts used to come to Wombwell, which was always well attended. I remember being stuck at the top of a very large Big Wheel, and wondering whether I would ever see firma terra again, in one piece. The library has recently had some extensions at the back, where the market would have been, and is used for many things, including community group meetings.

All my family were members of the Station Lane club, and every year, during the miner's weeks and summer holidays, they would go off en masse, to Scarborough, or Blackpool usually I believe. From what I recall there were close to a hundred coaches, but then it was a well-attended club at one time, with a large concert hall, a snooker hall, and a lounge dedicated to Wombwell Cricket Lover's, who have many a visit from eminent and famous cricketers. So well worth a visit for those who like a bat, or a bowl. The swimming baths was always full when I was young, as were the tennis courts in the park, which is at the top of the hill, so you would have to turn around on the entrance to Church Street, and walk about half a mile up the hill, over which is the train station, for Sheffield to Leeds or Huddersfield trains. There was another at one time, which was just below the Working Men's Club, aptly named Station Lane Club, and this was for trains to the west and Manchester and Liverpool, and east to Doncaster and Hull. The north/south is served via Sheffield, or Doncaster, not so far away. The canals used to follow the same route, and one of my uncles was a lock-keeper, and lived in a house which has now been flattened, close to the old bus depot, where I lived for over 30 years. They were draining the canal back then in the 60's, for the A1M1 link, which has now been built almost parallel to the Cortonwood canal, spoiling its beauty and charm with the noise and fumes. We used to damn the water and swim in it, as it was quite clean due it moving quickly due it being drained. After the fish were killed in the other canal, we used in for rafting, with the help of the local builder, who didn't mind us using their wood, which is hardly surprising the number of houses they built on the Dove Road Estate, and the money they must have made down the years. There were a number of buildings for stables too, as they must have used horses for the canal barges, and there were lots of bottles from the 1800's around them, a foot or so under the ground. Roman coins have been found around the town too, as there was a settlement near the woods I believe, after all, they used the A1 as a major connecting road between their settlements, and there were a few local roads linked to the old A1, Westwood Rd being one I think, in the next village Brampton. That canal has still not been fully drained, but it is not the same as it once was, and it did connect to the Barnsley and Manchester Ship canals, and finally Liverpool.

The town was surrounded by a number of pits for many years, and was bound to suffer from their losses. Add to that the popularity of the retail parks, especially the one on the grounds of Cortonwood pit, as well as Stairfoot, and you can see why the village life is not the same. Also, what fields were remaining have recently been built upon, and apart from the cemetery there is no real breathing space in the town any longer, which I find claustrophobic. Personally, I feel the town was at its peak in the late 60's, with fishing on the canals, swimming in canals, and baths, two cinemas, two theatres, lots of fields, a great town centre, with two markets... where everyone used to call most days, so everyone mixed and said hello. I sense the place was well off at one time, for a working class mining town, as many prominent buildings were built with Yorkshire stone, which is far more appealing than the red brick terrace houses. A good sized library too, and there used to be close to 30 pubs dotted around the place, but lots have closed. The war memorial was always a prominent part of the town, being at one end of it, which was closest to where I lived, and where bus stops were positioned on both sides of the street. There is another church at the opposite end of the high street, a Methodist Church I think, which was very beautiful, but may have become a property development now I think. At the top of the hill was the secondary school, which has been bulldozed now I think, and another one built where Darfield pit stood, serving Darfield and Wombwell children alike. There is also a go-karting circuit, and there used to be a big football stand adjacent to this for Wombwell Town, who were usually in the Yorkshire League, although there is still a smaller stand, next to the athletics track, which surrounds the football pitch. There was a foundry at the top of the hill, which has closed, and is now covered with houses, next to the golf course, a 9 holer, with shortish holes. Further over the hill is the train station, and Wombwell woods, within which at one time was a mine, and a coking plant, with railway sidings, all of which have vanished, apart from the reservoir. For a visit, I would be intrigued to see plans for the years preceding 1970, at different time intervals, for it was clearly quite a special town at one time, but just overbuilt on now, and without the same camaraderie of the pit days, and thriving town centre, nor the same outlets, such as cinemas, snooker, and clubs and pubs, although thee are a number of restaurants now on the hgih street, if you like Indians and that kind of things. Thanks for the video, and all the very best to all of oyu!!!.

@@gothicm3rcy426 Yes, right at the top, although they used the whole field, which is why the feast stopped coming there. I think it was built in the early 80's, just before the strike. The original was just below the field on the same side of the main road, as though you are heading to Brampton and Rotherham, just below the Conservative Club, ironically.

Hi, and thanks for posting the video, brought back many fond memories. I too, like Mikey Kennedy, grew up on Hawson Street back in the late 50's/early 60's. I can still remember when the gas lighter used to come down the street to "light the street lamps". Sad to see it's been decimated now, but that's progress I guess. Spent many days in the run up to bonfire night sitting outside the Prince of Wales, or station lane club touting for "penny for the guy". Brings back memories of the pea and pie stall at the market too, as well as Saturday Matinees at the cinema.

Very nice, brought back some memories. I learnt to swim in Wombwell baths, swimming club on Wednesday evenings. Had a good few pints in the Horseshoe, nice pub. Didn't know the old town hall was now a pub, though. Is the war memorial for the South African War still there on the wall? The library was a Carnegie Library, courtesy of Andrew Carnegie, the American multi-millionaire who had them build all over the UK. Nice of him to use some of his money for a good purpose!

Good to here that you moved from hawson and gower St. do you still live in London, just informing you of Wombwell, cause the people here don't change and after hawson Street was flattened kelvin Road Doctors had a building built to accommodate themselves and a pharmacy which still stands there now with a street running from the new police station down to a roundabout in between Wombwell wmc and the railway public house which usually serves the gypsies from down low valley.
