al-Bukhaari (684) and Muslim (421) narrated from Sahl ibn Sa’d al-Saa’idi that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Whoever notices anything amiss during the prayer, let him say tasbeeh, for if he does so it will be noticed; and clapping is only for women.” al-Haafiz said: It is as if women are not allowed to say tasbeeh because they are enjoined to keep their voices low in prayer at all times, because of the fear of fitnah. If women are forbidden to alert the imam by speaking if he makes a mistake, and should clap instead, so that they will not raise their voice in the presence of men, then how can it be allowed for a woman to lead them in prayer and deliver a khutbah to them?

Personally, I think many religions are lacking a lot of valuable resources when we overlook its women and their knowledge, wisdom and understanding on issues we face on a daily basis. My ancestors in Sicily were quite the scholars regarding the Bible, Talmud and the Koran regarding a wide variety of topics...in both spiritual and secular matters that influenced the Magna Carta, Declaration of Independence, etc

It's not a question of "why"; It's a question of "Why not?" God didn't forbid it as far as I'm aware, so who else has the right to? And people wonder why "there will be more women in hell than men". Assuming that that's even true, it's no wonder if women aren't allowed to be as actively involved as men are (within reasonable boundaries) when it comes to their religion.

One should not be looking "ahead/up" when standing in ir during prayer. One should be looking "down" at about 45 degrees. When women are leading prayer.. women are in front with "barrier" & gap in between both. Barrier - Covering - Partition.

Well there can be a compromise: a woman can be an imam meaning educational responsibilities but during the prayer people could just divide and she would lead the women and a chosen man would lead men.

As a Muslim, I only believe in the word of Allah, which is the Quran. Quran doesn't say that women can not lead the prayer. Inshallah, I would like to see women leading prayers.

I don't know if brother Shabir knows Arabic and has studied "Osool Fiqh" أصول الفقه: The rules of Jurisprudence, but this is by all means an innovation!

Both genders have rights , just the right attitude and respect is what matters and anyone succeeds when they have it, according to Islam.

Stating that men are required to lead prayers [ barring women from leading ] would be an innovation, a new rule, in Islam. Men have traditionally led prayers primarily due to cultural and social influences rather than religious restraints. There is no reason why a qualified woman can not lead a prayer. In my opinion, it would help all people learn more self-control {e.g. (some) men could learn to control their 'sexual desires,' ego, and actions more as they would have to focus on lowering their gaze more in order to pray}. Every person should be able to pray free of physical desires and ego, with humility, and should be focused on God alone.

This issue of females leading a prayer is so interesting. I will not side with any version but will keep following it. I love such theological issues inside my great religion.

Why is it not allowed for a Muslim family go to the mosque and pray as a family

Whilst this is a logical approach we must remember that no woman led the prayers in the masjid at the time of the Prophet SAW. Theres no point in doing an act of worship which won't be accepted by Allah. We should stick to the way the Prophet SAW did things, that's the safer way.

Well then that's why the leading women should be one who cannot bare children for example a Elder women, or barren women, or younger girls whom have not reached puberty, or just women who want to learn once competent, this is also educate and helps women girls learn, and gain confidence, sometimes I think many men like having dominance for the wrong reasons, bu Idon't see a problem, older women do not get their period, also for all women it's good to learn. My culture elder women like Native wahine(women) of New Zealand have similar tradition as Arabs well according to my family tree my family lineage is, and my people would have women call the visitors onto the land in a cultural way and then man takes over inside the house with prayers and speech, men walk into the house first to protect women, and men sit at front of women, women recite chant after the mans speech only if needed, men do most of the reciting prayers. In Christianity women are not to teach or usurp authority over men when taught correct. Women can teach and pray with women and children. In this area Islam seems to agree in general. Sadly, most have given away to feminism and it has destroyed much of Christianity.

Ijma' my brother is the consensus of scholars of the Salaf (the Sahaba and the tab3'een: Disciples and their students, along with the rest of the three favored centuries, not to mention other ages of the Umma up to this day.

@Amorphis777 In the Prophets time women also did not fight in battle during Jihad, yet there many muslim women in the military in their muslim countries, and there is nothing in the hadith saying that this is forbidden.

Your explanation of hadith is out of context. The Prophet had said that on a certain occasion when the Muslims defeated the Persisns and woman was chosen to lead them... Also Umm Warqa used to lead prayer in her area where the Muazin was a man, so it shows that she led prayers for mix gathering...

Prophet Muhammad grants - in authentic Hadith - the right path to those who follow the Deen only as it was back at his time and his immediate followers! "Whoever comes up with something other than that which we observe (as religion or act of worship), it is to be rejected" says prophet Muhammad as narrated by Ae'isha in Sahihul Bukhary. Imam Malik says: "Anything that was not at that time part of the Deen, is not to become part of it today or any other day"!

i thought we're talking about women in hijab here. if the women are properly dressed, which everyone is expected to be in a prayer situation, men won't have anything to check out. and again, this problem can be solved if men and women are separated anyway. one woman leads, other women stand behind her.. and the men in the next room or behind the curtains or something. :p

Asalaamu-Alaiykum Warahmatu-llahi Wabarakatu Brothers and Sisters, I would like to apologise in advance for the controversial example/question that I am about to state/pose for it will undoubtedly hurt plenty of feelings of the toes I am about to step on! Imagine a scenario, that of a woman/lady leading a congregational prayer ( as there are five at different times of the day and it could be any one of them ) and her menopause periods start in mid-prayer! The question arises how do you deal with that as a woman is not allowed to perform the rituals of hajj, fasting, performing salah on her own in seclusion at home, let alone approaching the house of Allah s.w.t and leading congregational prayers! ? Na'audhubillahi min hadha, Astaagh'firullah.

There is no prohibition on Women leading the prayer in Quran. It is mostly Male Chauvinism and something to do with the social fabric which contributes to such sentiments.

My point is that the Quran leaves out a lot of things unclear. We should all follow the Prophet, but not the Sunnah to the letter. It has unhealthily become an obsession. What is haram or hallal has already been revealed. Allah had his reasons for not revealing the content of the Sunnah in the Quran. We shouldn't rely too much on the Sunnah and the consensus of the Ummah. The sunni school is too extreme for my taste. I won't let any man take away the sacred freedom given to me by Allah. Islam is all about gaining freedom for the law of men to submit to the law of god. A spiritual liberation. What is the point then of recreating new types of mandatory manmade rules based on the consensus of men ? Firstly, I wanna apologize to all women. I am not sexist and I believe that goes for the teaching of Islam. The Prophet Esa mother, who came from a Prophetic family but yet she was not made a Prophet. The Grand Quran quotes that she was above ALL WOMEN and yet no Quranic evidence that she was a prophet or made an Imam AQ.03:43 - OH MARYAM, WORSHIP THE LORD DEVOUTLY. PROSTRATE YOURSELF AND KNEEL WITH THOSE WHO KNEEL. The Grand Quran says that, Maryam prostrate herself. It means that she did her salat by herself without congregation. At the same time she was asked to Kneel with those who kneel. That simply means, kneeling which is a form of prayers where people humble themselves not in the same way as a congregation salat. Possibly in a form of zikir [remembrance of ALLAH] or in a form of du3 [prayers]...... ALLAH KNOWS BEST

All Prophets p.u .them were Imams. Do you know any woman prophet? Even the best of women Mariam binti Imran (mother of Isa a.s) never was an Imam to anyone. After Rosul s.a.w. passed away none of his daughters or wives were not public imams. So if you want to follow authentic Islam there should not be Imams from women leading men's Salah. If you want still be lead by woman imam then do not call it islam or traditional salah. You just created new religion for yourselves.

There's too much discussion about women leading prayer. In my opinion....if she is true in her faith and capable....let her!!! Do you truly believe Allah cares? He looks at your heart and intentions...not your gender. Too much is placed on custom and tradition, and not enough on the veneration of the divine.

I understand totally with what you fear but, to be honest my friend, we as Muslims need to know what is more important, family or income and then make our choices related to that. From personal observation, I've seen families make it by putting their kids first with the Mom staying home while the father works hard. I've done it for a couple of years. It is mentioned in Al-Targheeb Book of Salaah Hadith # 336 Prophet s.a.w said: The best mosque for a woman to pray is her own house. Another Hadith in Masnad Ahmad Vol..6 Hadith #27202 A woman asked the holy Prophet s.a.w that "I love to pray with you" Prophet said, I know you love to pray with me but the best place for you to pray is your own house.

Honest question, if the question is about leading from in front of back than why not have the women in the front with the men's section behind. I understand this would get in the tricky because men should not be in front because looking at women's figures as oppose god.. I wonder if he as a modern scholar personally follow a women leading prayer.

Why does he go a round in circle? He should unequivocally state: as Imam Ibn Hubierah [d. 560A.H.] rahimahullah says: They [the scholars] have complete consensus that it is not permissible for a woman to lead a man in prayer in obligatory prayers. Muhammad (pbuh) used to recite from the lap of his wife while she was on her period. Does that mean that every time we recite Qur'an we must do so in this way? The Prophet nor Allah never specifically disobeyed the leading of prayer by a woman. If it was really such a "no no" don't you think it would have been mentioned at some point?

Prophet Muhammad Says in authentic Hadith: "This nation does not agree on a fallacy" This means that the consensus of scholars of old will never take place on something that is false! So if it has always been observed that it is not allowed for a woman to be Imam, or for people to do Salat in a mixed congregation, and not a single disciple or scholar of old even suggested otherwise; then anything else is by necessity false and innovation!
