The Cleveland Way is a National Trail that sits in North Yorkshire National Park skirting the high moors on one side of a horseshoe, while the other side follows a dramatic coastline. I did feel confident in covering the 107.4ml/173km but the true test would be the effects of winter on my mental and physical capacity and also my hiking and camping gear.

This final video (of a three part series) covers days five, six and a half day to complete the journey of this winter challenge. We start the next part of the journey by packing our gear following a wild nights camping about a mile and half north of Whitby.
It is not long before we have completed our hike to the outskirts of Whitby which is known as Sandsend. Here we pass the thatched cottage that is the only thatched cottage on the North Yorkshire Coast. Next we enter Whitby passing through the Whale Bone Arch and passing the statue dedicated Captain Cook. We are now crossing the Swing Bridge in the centre of Whitby before entering the ancient streets. These streets lead us to the famous 199 steps which take us up to the entrance of Whitby Abbey. Unfortunately, we are too early to have admission to the Abbey, so we rejoin the Cleveland Way coastal path.
The first significant building we discover is Hornblower Lodge, which was built in 1858 as a lighthouse. However, in 1900 it was converted to a fog warning station and a new lighthouse was built alongside the existing structure, this 'new' lighthouse is still operational. We now travel up and down through the various coves and amuse ourselves with the fact that one of these is named 'Rain Dale' which is an ionic statement of the persistent winter conditions we have encountered along the route. Day five draws to an end and we find ourselves on the outskirts of Robin Hood's Bay.
Day six starts with us wondering down into the village of Robin Hoods Bay, discovering all the quaint shops before finding the Flagstaff Steps which lead us up onto the headland. Just a mile or so and we are descending again off the cliff side into Boggle Hole which is where we discover the YHA. Here we cross the bridge with a raging flooded river forcefully pushing past the Boggle Hole YHA. This torrent of water provides a clue as to what we will discover next. A diversion caused by weather erosion along the cliff edge so we are forced to take the diversion along muddy farm tracks.
We witness more erosion which finds a war pill box desperately hanging on the edge of the cliff and we observe that the invertible will eventually happen with the sea claiming this as a possible next victim. Further on we discover the Peak Alum Works, but in the torrential rain and now added mist to the formulae it is difficult to linger, so we push pass this POI.
The mist and rain are making safe travel on the high cliffs potentially dangerous so we wisely decide that moving inland and taking the Cinder Track of the Cleveland Way a safer alternative. Eventually, the Cinder Track deposits us in the centre of Scarborough. From here we consult the public tourist map and decide to visit Marina Drive. It is here we discover the old Toll House. We also see the tall sea waves crashing over the sea wall.
To finish the days hike we wonder along Scarborough harbour, which has a kind of haunted look in all the night mist with the fishing boats gently bobbing on the sea and the loud blare of the fog horn providing an eerie base line to the experience.
Day six and a half see us setting off from Scarborough with the tide out and the sun casting a glorious golden hue across the scene. However, more diversions cause extra time as we try to complete the last ten miles in a half day. But we are not beaten and finally arrive at Filey to complete our wintery challenge of the Cleveland Way.

We’ve been catching up with your videos Nigel and are so impressed by this trail. However we are even more impressed by your achievement - hard core winter hiking and camping! Thankfully you had a couple of b&bs to take refuge in. Thanks for taking us along on this hike and sharing what you had in your pack in the next video.

A nice surprise to find this soon after upload. Take my hat off to you for persisting through that grim, wet day and was quite relieved to learn you had a b&b at the end of it! The Cleveland Way always seems to throw up some weather challenges. Beautiful shining sea and strand in the final frames. Thank you for taking us along.

Stunning scenery. You certainly experienced some dreadful weather. I remember I stayed at YHA Boggle Hole on my trip, it was stunning down there in the summer. You've brought back some very happy memories for me!

Thanks Carrie for watching the series, enjoyed your comments. Yes it was a pity the Boggle Hole YHA was shut for winter, otherwise I would have definitely stayed there.

Well done Nigel. My family all live in Bridlington & have said about how muddy the cliff tops are between there and Filey, so you did well to get around without any major issues!

Thanks for the videos of this hike...you facedsome really grim walking conditions, the sort that start that inner voice in your head asking what the heck am I doing this for.. As always you carried the single greatest piece of winter camping gear there is..a debit card, for the nearest B&B if that inner voice wins out, at least for the night 😉

Congrats on a great series Nigel, a shame about the diversions but it constantly needs maintenance due to erosion. I’m certainly looking forward to my own crossing later this year.

Nigel, You must have loved this walk. So many experiences and memories. I recall now that my 2018 Cleveland Way ended at RHB, but then I intended on doing the last 2 sections the following year right after finishing the C2C, but I was tired (having walked almost every day for over 2 months at this stage) and I hung around Scarborough for a couple of days instead, staying at the YHA there. It looked like you were also in danger of staying in Scarborough longer than you intended. But, you have wet my appetite for finishing the RHB to Filey legs of this some day (although, depending on where it fits in a future itinerary, I could do it as a single long day), likely tackling it right before or after the YWW. That leg between Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough was very dramatic, and I loved the weather and atmosphere you experienced on that day. It was a shame about the diversions, but the cinder track was an interesting alternative. It was also interesting to see you gave up the wild camping for a couple of B&Bs. Affordable ones were my modus operandi in the past, but rising costs have pushed me to use hostels and bunkhouses more. I'd consider wild camping, but my recent unpredictable back issues have me unsure how I'd cope with the extra weight and sleeping on the ground (albeit on a sleeping mat). This coming winter (here in NZ) I'll likely try and work up to multiple days with a fair weight in my pack to see what I can manage. Anyway, I look forward to your next adventure (I wonder what it could be), and I am mentally inspired to begin considering some UK walks should I make it back there in the latter half of 2025. Cheers.

Thanks Ryk, certainly enjoyed your post. I was taken aback by Scarborough, had no real expectations but actually found it quite an interesting and intriguing place, can totally understand why you might spend time exploring. Understand the cost issue, it's so prohibitive if your doing a long stint. However, wild camping has other advantages, mainly increasing your flexibility, you can choose to walk more or less on a given day. Also, worth knowing that most campsites will fit in a hiker, I've never been turned away, so no need to book in advance. When it comes to the weight of backpacking I've met some on the trail who don't carry cooking gear as there are usually plenty of options along the way, so saving weight on the gear and food. Hope the experimenting goes well in NZ and happy to answer any questions. Now where is that list that Ryk sent me for inspiration.....so many trails! Cheers, Nigel

@@AmblingTrails Nigel, Yes, I probably do have questions (and then more questions), and at some point this year will want to chat with you about potentially meeting up next year (whether that is you in NZ, or me in the U.K., or both). I'm just wondering how we can get a private contact for each other without putting it on a public forum like this - I have one circuitous idea, but perhaps there are much easier ways - open to suggestions. Ryk.

Yes Ryk the usual route is for you to open an Instagram account if you don'y already have one. Then choose to follow me and then send what they call a 'direct message'. We can then fathom it out from there. Lot's of advise on-line on how to do this if you need guidance. Hopefully, that will work!
