super timely as I am making a box in this style for xmas. rabbeted lid and all. What I did was finish the inside of the 2 boards after the resaw stage when the were the length of 1long plus 1 short using osmo, a hardoil/wax. THEN i did all the cutting into fresh wood so I did not have to mask the miters. I like his miter hook.

Rob I think I found a great value. The Jorgensen 60 1/2 low angle block plane for 35 bucks in the states. I think you would be impressed and your viewers would like it.

Rob, first off I think you are the highest skilled woodworker posting or video's or not today bar non! I also feel you sell the highest quality hand tools available today, which I have purchased, used and will recommend to anyone to purchase over other tools for sale! But , today I feel I have to disagree with you on your intro to build this box. You opened with, if you don't feel proficient to hand cut dovetails, here is an easier box to build. With your hand tool workshop video's with vet's, in 1 or 2 days they can produce very acceptable dovetails, some close to perfection! In this video you are using what I (and many others) consider to be the most difficult joints to cut Perfectly! The 45 degree miter! With you using 2 dedicated jigs to produce. Both take time and precision to build. One for cutting , the other for planning to perfection. Then using mock dovetails. If I were to build this box, I would spend my time practicing and perfecting my hand cut dovetails. Using the tape method to align the boards for marking, using the great Shaun shim vs. building jigs for the miter joint jigs. I will pass on this build. I will also continue to follow you and your great instructional video's, just not saving this one. Have a great Christmas or should I say Boxing Day and a Happy New Year! Eric

Following the perfect miters video he made, i use that same 1/8 router bit to make stop grooves in the miter itself to aligh my corners but not show when I cut the lid off (hope)

Does the video go from cutting the splines to the splines already all inserted? I would have liked to see the trimming required prior to the final planing.

Hi Rob, have you not tried the rubio monocoat finish yet? It's designed for floors so very tough, all kinds of colours available including clear or pure as they call it and the grain always shows through. One coat is all it takes. Great to see you back making boxes again. It was what got me interested in Rob cosman in the first place and iv learnt so much from you ever since

Since the splines are supposed to give the appearance of dovetails, maybe make their length match the thickness of the sides. Love the wood hinge. I'll have to give this a go.

They are just big readers. The brand I use is optivisors (you can find them everywhere) they come with different lens sets. I use 10X power

Hi Rob, I think these boxes are very cool, is there a way to cut the groove with hand tools (like with a Stanley 45 combination plane)? I am moving from mostly power tools to mostly hand tools. Thanks!

Do you mean the groove to accomodate the dowel? I'm thinking of wrapping sandpaper on the dowel itself to achieve the groove by sanding with it. I will try this technique on a piece of scrap wood and I will post the result.

Hey Rob, I know the purple heart project applies to purple heart vets, but do you know of any programs for disabled vets? I'm trying to get into woodworking but don't want to sell the truck and left kidney to get there haha. I have an 80% service connected rating though not purple heart

You don’t need a purple heart to apply. Wounded in combat, physical or mental and an honourable discharge or still active duty.

@RobCosmanWoodworking sadly/happily its not a combat related rating, just everyday infantry wear and tear. Honorable Medical Discharge. Fractured hip, nearly lost a nut (reason for discharge), and saw a friend suck start an M4 in front of us.

The wood dowel is segmented with welding rod holding the segments together. alternating sections of the dowel are glued to either the base or the lid. No portions of the dowel are glued to both. The hinge rotates on the welding rod.
