Thanks tuffy! I do like turning Apple Wood. Turns easy and pretty wood. Had a PT visit yesterday and he ok'd for bike riding. We went on an overnight camping trip and went for a short 8 mile ride along the Willamette River. Will do it again today before heading home. Thanks for watching. Gary

I always enjoy seeing you turn a live edge bowl. I have a couple of small apple trees that are going to be removed shorty. Guess they will be joining the wood collection for turning in the future. As always thanks for sharing with us Gary. Cheers Bruce

That Apple is just gorgeous, Gary! Sometimes, for me, there just isn't much color in Apple, but this one is exceptional. The heartwood just really makes this piece shine, along with your great poly finish, of course! I'm so happy the bark stayed on for you, it really adds to the overall natural look of the piece. Another beautiful piece, Gary! The colors are so vivid, and I’m glad you were able to keep the bark on-it adds so much contrast and interest! Lovely finish too. Looking forward to seeing what else you can dig out of your shed.

Excellent Gary! I haven’t had much opportunity to work with apple, but it certainly is beautiful grained wood! A nice surprise for everything to work for you. Interesting that you can apply a water based poly over shellac. It looks very good! Cheers, Rick

Thank you Rick. Yes you can put a water based over shellac sanding sealer. You actually can put about anything over it. The poly I used on this one is the oil based. Thanks for watching, Gary

Really nice, Gary. That wood is beautiful. The only problem with a bowl like that is you are limited on how high you can pile M&M's in it lol. Did you almost glue your finger to the bark? Bill
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 9 ай бұрын
Thank you Bill...the M&M's is no problem I just tell my wife to get me more. After my head stops hurting from getting smacked I just get up and get more myself LOL. Not sure why I did not get my finger glued but it worked out. I put the glue on the wood and spray the back of the bark and lay it in place. Finger holds it for a second. But I have glued it in place now and then LOL. Take care, Gary

Wipe on Polyurethane didn’t see that coming. Did you smooth the sealer with a scotch bright pad before the Poly? Nice piece!!

That's a really beautiful piece, Gary. Love the color contrast. I'll bet it looks even better in person. I'm curious about something. How long do your typical projects (this one in particular) take to complete? It is kinda hard to get a feel for it with sped up, real time and editing. Thanks

Thanks Tom. I never keep track but I would say 1-2 hours. Hard to say with lots of stopping. I did do one a few weeks ago and should all the turning in real time there was 10 minutes of turning. Then sanding and finishing would be added to that Thanks for watching, Gary

Beautiful as always. Question. Do you sand in between seal coats and finish coats because it looks so smooth. Thanks Gary.

Thank you Charles. Most of the time I use the fine Scotch Brite between costs. The trick is try not to put too much finish on at a time. If I get too much and it starts drying then I will use 400-600 sandpaper. Thanks for watching. Gary

Gary, very nice. I have a question when one’s talk about apple can it also refer to crab apple? I have a crab apple tree that a friend had. I cut it down because it was dying and have it in my wood pile. There are some sections that are 4-6” in diameter. I didn’t know so I wanted to ask. Thanks

Thank you Kevin. There are many types of apple trees and I have seen some very pretty things turned from Crab Apple. So for sure I would say turn it. Thanks for watching, Gary
