Wood Worm Screw Chuck - Tip of the Week

I explain a couple of tricks for using a wood worm screw chuck on a lathe to mount wood.

Thanks for the tips Mike! I use the wood worm screw for 99% of the bowls I turn. I have turned up to 12" x 6" bowls using the wood worm screw on both my OneWay Talon and Nova G3 Chucks and have never had an issue with them.

I watched both of your videos concerning the use of the woodworm screw. Very helpful, thanks for posting this one and the longer version. I use the Nova G-3 chuck on my lathe and the instructions that were included explain the recommended limits for the woodworm screw. OK, you got me, I'm one of those weird guys the actually read the instructions...I also ask for directions when I'm lost. :-)

Thanks Mike, nice tip. When first starting off with turning a few years back I had an issue with the placement of the screw within the chuck and your tip back then set me right. Thanks... Ken.

I used the woodworm screw for a little bit but went back to using the faceplate. My old lathe can only go down to 850 rpm so it was difficult to work with on heavier pieces (8-10 in).

I like the spacer and donut recommendation. Just turned 3 small bowls today. Wondering about using a bit of paste wax vs. candle wax. Thanks for posting.

I suspect any wax would help but believe a hard wax would work better than a soft wax and keeping a candle nearby is easier than opening a can. I am giving you a shout out in my woodturning tip tomorrow for suggesting it.

I tried using my can of carnauba wax today and seemed to work just fine. I immediately noticed how much easier the screw went into and out of the wood. I'm sold!

great info mike,,,i was looking on amazon at nova chucks and the small jspin chuck jaws,, and in the reviews some said they used the jaws like a worn screw,,but of course you will have to drill a larger hole,,i believe a 1 inch,,or a tad bigger,,what are your thoughts on this method

They call those pin jaws since they were similar to a pin chuck. This approach is typically used as the inital mount on the front side of the bowl while you turn the bottom and make a tenon or a recess. I don't use it as I see no advantage over a woodworm screw except perhaps easier removal. Sometimes it takes some muscle to remove a blank off a woodworm screw. Pin jaws would require a dedicated chuck unless you want to change jaws everytime you turn a bowl. I think that is my biggest objection. If I was a production bowl turner I would probably go that route.

mike im having a hard time using the woodworm screw,,don't know if I drilled the hole too deep but I was trying to mount a piece of green wood the other day and needless to say it was out of round but after I turned for a few min the screw just wolled itself our of the hold and I drilled it 5/16,,i really wish I could use the wood worm screw but I have had nothing but bad luck using it,,

jeff oldham Measure your drill bit. Sounds like you may have an oversize bit. Or the wood was punky. Deep hole will have no effect.

thanks mike,,i will do that,,it was a black and decker drill bit that came in a set,,i will get a different one,,thank you again
