These are the type of instruments that American played in their humble jazz in the 50s like the one note you did on the second strike where you placed it on the table.

Thank you for this video. I don't know if you've heard the song "Espresso" by Sabrina Carpenter, it's currently the #1 song in the world on the Spotify Global charts. It's a disco, funk and synthpop song and Sabrina released the instrumental for the song so you can hear the instruments used to make the song very clearly. I noticed a "tock" sound throughout parts of the song and wanted to know what the instrument was and came across your video when I searched up "woodblock instrument".

Thanks for reaching out. Yes, from what I can tell it is some sort of woodblock (either wood or composite).

What type of rubber mallets do you suggest are best? Hard, medium or soft ones? Currently, I'm playing with the shoulder of drum sticks on the edge, because with what I have at hand at the moment, that's the best sound

Thanks for the question. Hard rubber mallets are the best for woodblocks and temple blocks. Something like a Salyers PCX43 would sound great.

How do you tell the difference between a woodblock & a cowbell like in Michael Jackson's Demo of P.Y.T.?
