Thanks for checking out my build! I'm grateful to everyone who participates in this type of crafty stuff. It would be great to see your conversion. I clicked on your channel to see if you had it posted. My house remodel has had my time tied up since June of last year. I'm getting near the end of that project and will start building campers again by late spring. Safe travels to you guys.

Love the simple build. I'd sand the bondo and put a wood cut out of mountains or a star type pattern both sides stain a different color to hide the damage. . You could as time and money allows, add foam insulation and use the large carpet grey or black that home depo sales to line over walls on inside. Add a few shelves to put those cloth boxes on with bungie cord x's to keep in place, very small ledge. Add a few shelves and have a coffee pot on inside and a plug in for power strip. Then could charge phone and stuff. Its a great and inexpensive build. I love the wood look. Amazing you did such a sturdy build. Also, could paint or stain plywood on inside and stain the studs a pecan color would look beautiful. Could also sand the inside where repair is and then paint all the plywood white and the studs a pecan color. Would pop. Hope you enjoy it.

Diffuser & tie down ideas are EXCELLENT & on that damaged side just get a sheet of aluminum & cover the whole side, a) was the hinged hold downs for holding down the A/C ?? b) The pulling down the rear so easy gives a idea about putting a handle there to aid in moving c) How did it react to vehicles passing you like tractors trailers??
@mikekrabal
@mikekrabal 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to ask questions. I'll do my best to answer. I noticed you mentioned the use of aluminum a couple times. The overall goal was to keep the price down. Sheet aluminum is about 2 to 3 times the price of wood or galvanized metal. You're right, it looks nice and is maintenance free, but I couldn't afford it at the time. Plus, I wanted a wooden camper. Possibly, the next camper build will incorporate the use of aluminum. The camper pulled fantastic behind the car. No swaying whatsoever, even with the big rigs passing. After my travel job, I actually used those hinge hold downs to tie my dirt bike down. I now occasionally use the camper to take my dirt bike to the track.

Yes sir, I've been to Arkansas twice on my motorcycle. Once, I camped at a campground near Lake Village. Another time, we passed through on our way to Texas. It's a beautiful state. The problem I had with small 4x8 trailers was also the price. I didn't want to pay $5000 to sleep in something so small. So I built mine. I really appreciate you watching the video. Thank you. I hope you're able to find the camper that you're looking for.

Great ideas, thanks! What kind of dirt bike are you hauling in it? I'm customizing a $2k 4x6 cargo trailer. You make me wish I built one like yours... Closed cell Spray foam can be bought on ebay. It's lightweight and adds tremendous structural strength. A side door gives you the ability to put a 18" deep kitchen/storage across the back. A simple wall plug will hold a small heater from Home Depot for cold nights...
@mikekrabal
@mikekrabal 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video! I was hauling my crf450r in it. I did take the front wheel off to make it fit. Thanks for the foam suggestion. I hadn't thought of it for this type of build. I had thought of the foam panels. I may use it in the next build. Good luck on the rest of your build. I think you're right in that the optimal kitchen area is along the back and that a side door is good for that design. My next build may incorporate some of that.

Great Mike. Question: I see you glued the side panels and they are bend in with the frame. Why don't you use screws and build straight frame on both side? I have no knowledge of building, just curious. Thanks.
@mikekrabal
@mikekrabal 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question and watching the video! Here's another video that shows the actual camper build. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fq5igaSKnrvUaJc.html I used screws on the top edge of the side panels. They are hidden under the fold of the roof metal, to keep that area from leaking. I used the standard trailer bolts at the bottom end of the side panels to hold them tightly to the trailer frame. In between, that's where I used the glue. I wanted as few holes as possible exposed to the elements, to stop the chance of leaking. Also, I thought the uninterrupted wood grain looked good. The trailer is curved at the top instead of straight so that a 4-foot wide sheet of galvanized metal could be used as the roof, and also to allow a one-inch overlap one each side as an easy way to keep water out. I chose to curve the walls instead of lean the walls in because I thought the curve would look better. If the sheet metal was sold wider than four feet, I'd have made the walls straight. The curve is in part due to the limitation of what material I could find to purchase. Thanks again for watching, and I hope this has helped.

After the experience of building and using this first teardrop I'm really curious to see how the second one will turn out! What will be the main changes? Almost the total price of the first one goes on the trailer alone... it seems that the idea of building cheap has changed. Thanks for sharing with us ;)
@mikekrabal
@mikekrabal 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video. I appreciate your questions. You're right about the price of the trailer making the next project more expensive. I sure wish we could still purchase these trailers new for $350. The next camper will be for sale, once completed, so I thought it better to build on a new trailer using much of the same building techniques and materials. The main changes will be focused on making a more imaginative-looking camper with larger windows, maybe a side door, a single rear door with a window, and a few added curves. I also would like to add a mini kitchen and some sort of outside shower setup. The last camper was built in a hurry. This next one, I can take my time on. Thanks again.

I would like to make myself a 6'×10' trailer to haul my balloon arches and balloon columns. I don't need anything super heavy-duty just strong enough and light enough to tow behind my VW bettle. How would you suggest I make a 6'×10' trailer out of a 4'×8' trailer? Thank you
@mikekrabal
@mikekrabal 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video. Honestly, I haven't thought about building a 6x10 trailer before. But anything can be done with some imagination. Perhaps sheet aluminum would be better than wood. There's really no advantage to using wood unless wood is the look you want. If I were building a practical trailer.for hauling material, and money wasn't an issue, I'd build with aluminum every time. Metal studs and aluminum. Though, first I'd check the classifieds for a used 6x10 aluminum trailer.

I had my doubts when I saw you using the thin wood, then I saw that your reasoning was weight due to pulling it with the 4 cyl car. It looks as though your framing turned out very rigid, seeing as it didn't bend or flex while pulling....not to mention obvious rough roads and wind. Have you put together how much $ you saved by staying in the trailer vs. staying in a hotel room? I'd be very curious to know. Also, the diffuser was genius for the A/C. Did you notice considerable lack of cooling due to lack of insulation? Sorry for all the questions, your build has really stirred interest in me! I'd love to have to time/talent to pull something like this off.
@mikekrabal
@mikekrabal 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video and for the good questions. As I used the camper to travel the country for work, I not only saved money for hotels, but my employer paid me the money he'd usually spend on my hotel rooms since he didn't have to buy me a room. Each week was like having two paychecks. It was fantastic. On the weekends, while traveling from job to job, I'd save two nights worth of hotel room fees. My employer always got us nice rooms, but I'm more of a Motel 6 person, so maybe I saved $50 each time I didn't stay in a cheap motel. The job lasted twelve weeks so maybe I saved $1200+ on those weekends in the camper. During the work week, I stayed on the job site. As for the A/C, I often couldn't run it at full capacity because it was too cold in there. The only state that I ran it at full capacity was Florida where the night temperate was about 85 degrees. A 5000 BTU A/C, like mine, is more than enough for an uninsulated 4x8 camper.
