How To Build a Rocket Camper

I build my rocket-themed homemade camper from scratch. It's a micro camper of a different sort. It's an experiment in building a round camper instead of the traditionally shaped teardrop camper. It's 100% DIY. It's 100% an experimental build!

It's a super common trick in Australia. It's common to see one painted black for hot water with a hose coming off it.

This is hands down the best DIY camper I've seen. Your attention to detail, creativity and superior craftsmanship is amazing. Can't wait to see reactions when you take it on the road. It was a pleasure to watch beginning to end. Can you submit this for a competition at your State Fair?

Thanks for having a look at the video. I did search the WV state fair entry rules and didn't find a category where the rocket would fit. Nearly every category came with a size limitation of up to 24 inches. However, just pulling the rocket to the fair would be good exposure in the parking lot. Thanks for the idea! We took it camping to Mammoth Cave National Park last week, in Kentucky. Ten hours, one way. It handled well and we had a few fun encounters with folks. Great time!

This is the coolest tiny camper ever! My granddaughter and I built her a tiny house and ever since, I've wanted to try a micro camper. Your design really makes a 4 foot wide trailer go a long way! Well done. Thankyou for posting.

Think both of your builds are awesome. I bet your kids love this one.. I would love to be able to build something like this but more of a bike camper for the homeless that way they have someplace to call home. I have all the ideas in my head but no money to make them. I would love to find someone that has the passion that you have in building these little campers. You have done a great job.

Mike another champion build; like dmann1209 commented, I agree - the DIY PVC water tank was ingenious in so many ways. The front artwork is a dead ringer for the Millennium Falcon making the jump to hyperspace! Keep these great videos coming!

Thanks for checking out the video! I have since learned that using PVC makes the water non-potable, but one could still take a shower and put their camp fire out with the water from a PVC tank. I wonder if there is any sort of potable tubing on the market. All the best to you!

Wow, one of the most unique DIY tiny camper builds I've seen. Such innovation and imagination. I can only tow 2000 lbs. so that would be too heavy for me, but I might buy a Harbor Freights trailer, like the one you used, and build it out so I can at least travel with all my gear and maybe add a car top tent on it.

How much does this weigh? I have a small hybrid truck that is unable to pull more than 1,000 pounds after family and gear. Love this. Could be perfect for my harbor freight trailer! Looks much lighter than my 2 failed plywood builds.

Thanks for the question. I literally weighed it for the first time, two days ago. It's 1360 lbs. There are a few ways to save on the weight, I believe. You could build a five-foot-round fuselage instead of six-foot. The rear table would fit better, if so. Maybe not using a refrigerator would save weight. The water tank could be smaller and more traditional and that could save weight, too. And building a different style water tank setup could make it lighter by not having two decks above the trailer. I hope that helps and it would be awesome to see what you come up with!

You've done a spectacular job and it looks outstanding. I think you should have made a muffler like on the back end the way the space challenger looks . But it's still beautiful looking thank you for sharing !!!

Thanks. Your comment is greatly appreciated, and foretelling. Since finishing the main build, I made an exhaust using the tops of three 5-gallon buckets and some heavy wire. I cut the buckets to 4 inches deep, painted them red and attached them to each other making a triangle. I shaped the heavy screen into the shape of fire, the best I could, then painted it orange, yellow and red. The painted screen was installed into the bucket pieces then all of it was bolted to the center of the table. It turned out great. Flames are now shooting out of the rear of the rocket!

This is a design I've wanted to do for a long time! (Not a rocket ship, more of a gypsy caravan) I worked in the Shell Dept. At an RV plant as a roof setter for years. We built everything from the inside out All of the cabinets were set at 1 5/8 from the edge of the floor, and the walls were set to that leaving the wall flush to the edge of the floor. Kind of hard to do when it's round, lol!

A gypsy caravan is on my bucket list, too. They are really neat looking. It's been awesome to hear from folks who've worked in the RV industry since posting this video. Some day, I'd like to do the paperwork to become a one-man, small-time manufacturer. Until then, just experimenting in the garage lol. I hope you'll give your caravan a shot. Would be great to see!
