Spoon carving tools you'd need:

straight wood carving knife 👉 bit.ly/32VO9cl
good wood for spoon carving 👉 basswood
recommended spoon blank out of basswood 👉 bit.ly/3aA7P86
Wooden spoon carving is a topic of our video today.
We'll cover spoon carving step by step in our tutorial. The design of the spoon handle is not a regular one, as you can see from the video, it's a curly handle which will be a great carving idea in case you already have a bunch of wooden spoons carved by hand.
Carving a spoon takes not so much time and you need a few tools (a hook knife and sloyd knife).
Spoon carving relaxing occupation as well as it is practical. You get a wooden spoon for your future use.
In our videos and wood carving tutorials, we only cover hand tools as we are more into traditional spoon carving.
What's more important you'll see how to use a spoon carving knife and will be able to refer to this tutorial in the future.

Hello, I know this was posted a while ago, great tutorial by the way but, a little bit more info would be helpful, ie, what wood was used for this tutorial, it's obviously looking very easy to work with. What woods you would avoid attempting to use, Hygiene point of view. Again great work & thank you.

Thank you for your interest. Usually, we work with basswood cos it's softwood. If you want to carve a spoon to use in a kitchen, it's better to use Pine, Bamboo, Ash, Maple, Oak but these types of wood hard to carve, so practice on softwood first

@@BeaverCraftToolsBasswood (lime) is a hardwood (no space intended) not a softwood, but is a soft wood in texture but with a fine grain. Liked the video.

The grain in my wood blank made it really tough to work on my spoon. It changes direction in so many places and makes it tear out often and some areas incredibly difficult to remove wood. Maybe I should just get some green wood and give that a go.

I think a great idea would be to go to the link in their description and order some basswood spoon blanks. Basswood is an excellent straight-grained wood and you can get 2 blanks on their site for just a little more than the price of one!

@@Jackalski57 Thanks guys. I am using a basswood blank I got with my knife order. The grain just seems to be a bit screwy. It changes direction often or so it seems. I can cut in one direction on the handle and will be nice and smooth until I reach 2/3 down and then it will get tough to cut and tear out a lot. The other end is just incredibly difficult to cut any wood from, can only get a little bit at a time compared to the rest of the spoon. I think I just need to grind away at it and home the next one is easier to use. Thanks for the feedback.

@@robertm4050 Wow, that's a bit strange, though not impossible with basswood. Hopefully your next ones are better!

I see you're using a standard basswood blank from your site. Rather than using a metric ruler and converting to inch units, you may as well just quote the metric units. Many metal rulers are dual scale and have both metric and inch scales opposite one another. I say that because at 1:40 there is a mistake in your conversion. It states to make two marks 0.4" on each side from the central line, but you show 15mm, which is closer to 0.6" Also, how far from the edge of the bowl should the dividers (aka compass) be set...is there a particular bowl wall thickness that should be aimed for? You don't mention that in the video, but I think it would help. Great video otherwise, but I thought I'd make some suggestions that I think may be helpful. You may also want to note in the beginning of the video that the blank and tools are available on your website and are linked to in the description.

Thank you very much for your comment, Jack. Just leave 0.08 inches to the edge of the bowl. In addition, the conversion turned out to be not quite right, so we’ll take into account adding size in mm.

I have asked this question twice now, it seems that this site needs to sell basswood... I have AND WANT TO USE: Apple, Cherry, Peach, Sycamore, Walnut, and Yellow Locust. I was just looking for advise from this site, not a link to buy basswood from Amazon or anyone else. I do not want to waste my resourses... is this site supported by Beaver Craft Craftsmen Mentors??

@@brianlegrand2210 Apple and Cherry are fine. Where I am from we used to make spoons traditionally out of fruitwoods. They're harder than basswood and might crack easier so it's not usually something you start with (but you definitely can). The other woods you mentioned are gonna be harder.

The measurements given in this video are confusing. I am used to inches, but not measurements like 0.3", 0.08", etc. It seems for such small measurements, millimeters would be more effective? I'm having to look up every measurement into a converter because a ruler does not measure decimals of an inch.
