Judging from the title , as I was watching the video I thought for sure at any second there was gonna be a deep catch with the tool breaking and shrapnel flying. Glad I was wrong. Thanks for the cool video

And pitch, and run out, and harmonics, and..... Cool to watch tho. But surely a mini lathe could do same without making me fear for my life the entire time....

You may want to use a lubricant like "cool tool" or a light tapping lubricant or maybe even good-old WD-40. It doesn't take much just a little bit to make life easier for your tools and reduce vibration. You may also want to keep the Tool rest nearer the work that will also tend to reduce vibration and give you a better finish. Have you tried mounting up an actual metal turning tool bit (or carbide insert) in a cross slide mounted to the lathe bed. You might find that it works better for "precision turning" of non ferrous metals... Most of all take care and be safe...kunk

A lot of people claim there is no skill in turning wood using a CNC milling lathe designed for metal. Do you have one handy to prove them wrong? I've always believed that the skill is in how the woodturner applies their knowledge to what is creating the work, whether by hands using tools, or by instructions fed into a computer program.😁👍👍

One thing to note: Many metals can become dangerously flammable in the form of dust, chips, or shavings. Combine that with the heat generated in turning the metal and there is fire potential. On this scale it's not a very large hazard, but not small enough to be waved off, and worth bearing in mind from a safety perspective. (Some metals also become highly toxic when finely divided, but I kinda doubt you're going to be turning things like beryllium, lead, or uranium. 😁)

well, it is basically what watchmakers used, just with the wrong cutting tools and chuck. the tool rest is just a larger version of a watchmakers lathe tool rest. note that its possible to turn parts of quite high precision using a hand held cutter only. I for one do this on my clock makers lathe semi frequently, especially when turning rounded parts for which i don't need a perfect radius and don't feel like grinding a form tool. It dose take practice to not break the tip of the cutter / chisel, as its a very fine polished point.

Not like this, no. This is risking your face. You mount a milling vice on your lathe, and secure the tool in the vice using the same securing blocks used on a metal lathe, so it can't slip out due to the tapered lock. Then you can easily switch between metal and wood by just removing the "custom toolpost"
