FULL DISCLAIMER: I paid my own money for this thing, and it is the FIRST cordless router I've ever tried. My only other experience with a trim router is with the Bosch Colt trim router PR20EVS

I slide the base off completely before changing the bit. And of course I use two wrenches, not the spindle lock. The Mastercraft in my router table has that lock and it always feels like it's about to break when I'm installing a bit.

I just bought the Ridgid compact router. HD was running a special where you buy 2 Max Output batteries (4.0 and 6.0 Ah) and a charger for $169 and you get your choice of several tools. I chose the router. Works very well. I like the power switch. You won't inadvertently turn it on, potentially damaging your material or yourself.

still happy with mine. certainly slower rpm's than a corded unit, but for edge treatment it works just fine.

I pulled the trigger on the Rigid last year. I have a Bosch colt as well which I've had for many years. I like the Rigid because it's handy. I leave a roundover bit in it and grab it often. It's much easier / convenient than the Bosch because it's always ready. I find the battery life could be better. It's frustrating only having one battery for the unit as I must wait for it to recharge to get back to business. I guess I need to purchase a 2nd battery. Overall, I think it's a good addition to any shop. Thanks for the vid, Art!

Yeah, we'll have to see how the battery goes. If I use this a lot, I'll be keeping my eyes open for future options to add another battery for sure!

Picked up the same kit last year (these sales are on a few times a year). I really like the convenience of the cordless "grab and go". And you will get used to the switch after using a few times. Enjoy and I look forward to a 4 yr review video!

Art for better pricing on tools always check the resellers who advertise on craigslist or the electronica phone apps. It’s a whole sub industry. when the box stores have returned Items they wholesale them out because I can’t sell them as new and resellers will buy them at $.30 on the dollar and sell them between 50 and $.65 on the dollar.
@Wordsnwood
@Wordsnwood 3 жыл бұрын
Haven't heard of electronica. Have to see if that extends up here into Canada. Just checked Kijiji (Craigslist equiv) and see some tools popping up -- looks like people have purchased kits in the sale and now selling off the bits that they don't want.

It can be slightly more expensive (unless you find a good deal to get you started) to be invested in more than one battery ecosystem, but it is incredibly freeing. I fought it for years, but finally broke down to get a couple Milwaukee nailers despite my serious existing Dewalt investment. I'm so glad I did and wish I hadn't waited. I now have access to tools in both lines, and each has better tools or offerings the other doesn't have. I probably won't hesitate if I need a tool that can only be found in the Rigid line in the future.

Watch for the depth control to get loose. I have the Ryobi version and the depth setup is basically exactly the same. I had to really tighten up the nut on the release to keep it from creeping down.

I did the exact same thing. I owned a set of Mastercraft Maximum drill/driver and needed to pick a battery platform because CT has dropped the ball. (the set I had was/is working perfectly, but they didn't expand the line) I talked to a rep at Home Depot who was working on his display and found that Ryobi/Milwaukee/Ridgid are all the same company. Ryobi was a hard NO (It is for gardeners and people who make a couple cuts per month), Milwaukee is AWESOME in quality and line(has a HUGE line of tools, but very expensive as they are geared more toward contractors who work all day, every day), and then there was Ridgid. I already own a few corded tools of theirs and the quality is excellent.. The rep said that Ridgid will actually be doing away with cords and all tools will be battery powered. The line is fairly decent and expanding... So, Ridgid it is for my new platform, and the first tool I bought was the Octane trim router, and I LOVE IT. I use it mostly for chamfers and roundovers on cutting boards and serving boards. Of course, it had no battery, and getting one would be expensive... The rep told me to hold off for a week if I could, as there would be an awesome deal coming, and he was right. I ended up getting a drill/driver combo with 2 batteries/charger and it came with choice of free tool so I got a circular saw as well. WATCH FOR THE DEALS !!

I have seen the Makita available with battery and a few other things (though more often sold just as a bare router without a battery). However, it comes in at around 300 dollars.

Art, coming back to this one because I just found out that the dust shroud that comes with the octane trimmer works with the corded R2401 as well. Have you tried out the dust shroud with the octane? I'm contemplating ordering a couple for my 2401 trimmers.
@Wordsnwood
@Wordsnwood Жыл бұрын
I've used it, but not much. I will confess to laziness -- usually I'm using this with a roundover bit for an edge treatment and I just grab it and go, and then sweep later.
@NWGR

@@Wordsnwood No problem, I appreciate your input. I have a couple of projects coming up that involve working in an apartment, so I'm trying to minimize as much dust as possible at the source. I'll grab one and see how it works out.

How many battery platforms does a guy need? That is part of what is holding me back from some purchases. Why they don't come up with a universal battery platform for all brands is a constant frustration. I hear Makita has a wide range of tools that run on the same battery, but the cost of admission is pretty high. A cordless router is one of the things I would really like.

Well, this makes four for me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Truly, I'm a bit surprised at how well the modern LiOn batteries are lasting. My green compact 12v Hitachi's are around 10 years old, and yet the batteries still hold a decent charge. (as a hobbiest, I'm not running them all day, so that probably counts) The NiCd drill which I had before that did not last that long.

A lot of times a corded tool will have a little more power if you were to upgrade to a 5 or 6 amp hour battery it would probably become negligible

Personal opinion -- What an awkward power switch! There has to be a better way to make a switch and a better location for it!!! Two handed turn-on? And speed control off in limbo land? Hope you like it Art.
@Wordsnwood
@Wordsnwood 3 жыл бұрын
You could be right about the power switch, time will tell. The speed control I don't care about, as I rarely change it, and I never change speed during a cut, so it's location is no issue to me.
