Word of wisdom to anybody building something similar - make the dropped center section deeper than your current saw and shim the saw up to flush. There are few things more irritating than buying a new upgraded saw only to realize it has a thicker base and now you need to modify your bench.

Good idea, thanks for sharing it.

That’s a great idea Bradley - if I do ever change the saw and the base is higher I’ll just have to wrestle the tops off and fix them back down with shims. :)

I was thinking along similar lines, like bolting in the center section do make later modification easier.
@thewolfin
@thewolfin 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking exactly this when he was putting the saw in... Bad case I guess you could build a recessed tray to make the middle section sit a bit deeper (bonus dust collector!), though that would require redoing those support welds he said he added in the plans. And worst case, trim the saw's base down.

Nice work Neil! If I were you I would get rid of the cut off saw for a cold saw, best thing I have done in my shop. they cut straighter with a nicer finish and the part doesn't get hot.

Cold saw changed my life cutting steel. The time saved paid for itself in two days.
@Bob_Adkins
@Bob_Adkins 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. The abrasive saws aren't saws at all, they wear and melt their way through the metal. The only downsides to cold saws are the needle-sharp bits they make, but those are preferable to fine dust settling everywhere.

I've been wondering how to build a workbench that would survive a nearby asteroid impact. Now I know. Plenty of workspace, indestructible, airtight (nearly so) for dust proofing and nice looking. Amazing design, videography and craftsmanship, as always! Thanks for the lesson.

Dear Neil, I always have a chuckle when you off-handedly brush past a couple of works of absolute genius as if you think that we mortals are in the same league of creative ability that you have. Your workbench for metal fabrication is simple brilliance and your jig for welding a piece of metal precisely in the Z-axis just shows your talent. To take the cake for ideas however you can’t go past the idea of a single bolt to allow rotation of the cutoff saw. Anyone who has struggled to cut their steel @ 45˚ would appreciate the sheer simple elegance of your idea Neil. I’ve not seen neither elsewhere that you show in your incantation. Well done. Merry Christmas.

Awesome build. I've been building all of my shop furnishings out of galvanized fence posts and Steeltek fittings. No welding required, and if I ever move, all I gotta do is unscrew the fittings and the whole thing comes apart. I've built my work bench framing out of it, and topped it with a solid core external door for the worktop. I built my shelves and other odds and ends out of it as well. Steeltek makes for an incredible metal frame system. But yours is so much better in nearly every possible way. What a beauty of a build.

I always enjoy your projects, but more and more I anticipate the "little touches" and amazing jigs and methods you devise and use.
