I'm experimenting with scarring the trunk of my Baobab Style Jade (Crassula ovata) to simulate the damage that an elephant would do.
I'm also pruning the branches of the old Jade cutting to create a Baobab style tree.

That's sheepish and innocent way you initially tried to deny any knowledge on attaining new specimens. That is exactly me when I've yet again ordered more dice or tarantulas lol! Good work buddy, things are looking great! :) - Ashley Bonner

WOW! I've followed you once before when you did scarring on a jade to create a "Baobab" look. Interested in seeing how this one turns out.

That is a really remarkable old jade at 70. The experiment on the younger will be interesting to see the outcome. Great looking gift Jades. Simply superb!

I recommend some wood filler on those chips, and then your diluted tar finish . The stand would look great.

Hello, it works on adenium, I think it will works with jade, and for adenium if you don t give them fertilizer they won t grow long branches, i ve got many of them and i ve got arabicum from seeds 7 years old and only 15 to 20 cm tall with a lot of tiny branches
@TheBonsaiZone

Can you put on a clear water sealer for the new display stand? Will help to preserve it. You can do a test underneath the stand and see if you like it. Just a thought.

Hello Nigel! I’ve watched quite a few of your jade bonsai videos but I’m still a bit stuck with mine and what my next steps should be. Are you available to contact anywhere if you are able to give me a bit of advice for my gollum jade? My plant’s been regrown from close to death from the fabled squirrel attacks so haven’t wanted to touch it in a couple years. Thanks for letting me know if you can help out!!!

Hello Nigel, Have you ever tried or heard of anyone airlayering a pine tree? I have a interesting find where a branch crosses another near the root. I was going to try layering. Michael
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone Жыл бұрын
Yes, it can be done on some species, but it is difficult.....This from the internet... Can pine trees be air layered? Pine trees can be air layered but they are one of the hardest trees to do so. It is reported that the air layering process on pine trees can take up to 2 years.

Hi Michael, One year I bought a small JBP at my club's show that was labelled as a "cutting". I have been told that it is possible, with times ranging from a few months to a few years! I put one onto one of my JBPs with the theory that it is a sacrifice trunk, so coming off regardless of if it has roots! Moving into winter here now, so it is a few more months before I will check it (been on for 5 months so far, and the top is still alive . . .) Fingers crossed, and nothing ventured, nothing gained!

@Rebecca Hunter Thank you for reaching out. I did a dig yesterday, I never uprooted a Pine tree sapling, they aren't really root bound atlesst mine weren't. I also have two very small cuttings inside of a container I use for a easy greenhouse no roots but do have growth on the tip. I just keep water in the bottom portion of clear top container. Do you have a KZfaq channel?
@rebeccahunter725
@rebeccahunter725 Жыл бұрын
@@MRMIKEYGB No KZfaq, sorry! Good luck with your cutting - I can't help with the state of the roots on the one I bought, as it was gifted to a friend.

Jades can grow quite quickly if you have a good draining soil and you pot them up slowly as they grow!!

From a jade plant, can I just cut all the foliage and let it regrow from that, or do I have to leave something on?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone Жыл бұрын
If the plant is strong, you can cut them back hard with no leaves and they will re grow. I have defoliated Jades with good success!

@Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone Thanks for your reply Nigel. I really got inspired by people like you. Your baobab styled trees look gorgeous! The tree I have, looks strong enough. But to be sure, I left 2 little bits, I can remove later, when new foliage has grown. Best regards and 💚 from a big fan from the Netherlands. You're a great teacher! ✌️

The key to not keeping the cherry tree... DON'T PRUNE IT! If you don't prune it, you don't visualize it's future, and it's easier to give up. If you prune it, and make decisions based on how it could look, it's over. Might as well make some space on your bench now 😂.
