This was incredibly powerful.....It reminded me of me and my diagnosis with ambivalent attachment disorder. I was rejected and bullied for most of my life and love towards myself and others is something that I locked and buried away. My friends really cared for me and wanted me to start therapy becasue I felt absolutely worthless and I was having suicidal thoughts. So I gave it a try and I reached the point in my therapy when I no longer hate myself because I am capable of feeling love. Your speech really hit the nail with those two points. I too felt like I dont deserve love but on the other hand I want to be loved. Thank you so much, Jacob. Your videos help me carry on to the next day and the next :)

What an incredible and touching story. The whole point of this video is to give people hope so your story is an amazing testament. I hope others read your post and keep on trying and believing. Know that you have helped save another person from suicide through your story. Thank you.

Once again you're right on the money doctor ham. My son hanged himself it's been a while now but the guilt I feel is never ending. I believe you're right so much when you say they must be Fearless in the face of death. I do believe that he felt like he didn't belong I loved him so much he was 19. He did it in the garage not more than 20 feet from where I was sleeping he must have hated me. We were always close I was single mother miss him. I found him and cut him down giving CPR. I feel so guilty. I have trouble every day with PTSD that I love your videos they make me feel better.

So sorry for your loss. I obviously don't know your son, but I want to believe he doesn't want you to suffer, to be blamed, or to hurt endlessly on. Please take care of yourself. Get help. And I hope that you can begin to heal fully soon.

Keep looking. Finding a good therapist is like online dating. There's a lot of chaf.

I really appreciate the freedom Dr. Ham displays as a therapist. He seems to trust his instinctive wisdom which takes in so many factors that cannot be picked up rationally and explicitly.

Dr. Ham, you are a caring therapist. I am impressed by your accessibility. Thank you! People need to be understood, loved, and accepted (having a sense of belonging)... Our society seems to be so self-absorbed that the capacity to affirm others is very limited. Your comments about suicide are very helpful. The phenomenological pain that might spark a person's desire to commit suicide involves 2 perceptions: (1) Being a burden to other people (2) Being thwarted in your sense of belonging Most who consider or attempt suicide will not succeed without being fearless in the face of death.

Fantastic speech Mr. Ham. I have particularly enjoyed the videos about attachments and I wonder if you’re considering making ones concerning codependency, its different types and ways to overcome it.

thank you. Honestly, I don't know enough about codependency to say anything insightful about it. :-(. There's always so much to learn!

Hey Rob, I recently came across some videos on codependency from Craig Kenneth, hopefully they are useful. He focuses on break ups, but also discusses relationships in general.

And what if there is an afterlife populated by people exactly like her Parents and it is all pain and suffering, but in that afterlife there is no suicide option, no escape, no numbing out, etc. Extreme catastrophizing. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, but generally people don't think they may be blocking out the Sun's rays to the very grass they may be standing on.
