I sat down with Dr. Vivek Murthy to discuss Mental Health within the workplace. He shares many insights and actionable items that we can put into place to help better our mental health in our everyday lives, including during the time we spend at work. He touches on the newly released Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing framework which can be found here: SurgeonGeneral.gov/workplace
I hope you enjoy and if there are topics you are looking for more support and education on when it comes to the workplace please let me know in the comments!
Stay Moist & Toodaloo!
Laura

A "break" is a specified period of time with no expectations or duties. Showering, exercising, grocery shopping, cleaning your house, scheduling appointments, sorting mail, taking the dog to the vet, and going to the doctor are not breaks. Those are other forms of work that don't produce an income.

Thank you so much for this informative chat! So often I’ve missed social engagements because I couldn’t get away from work. I’m talking about overtime or off the clock working. This interview inspired me to set boundaries at work and make it clear that I need to prioritize personal time just as I do my work time and that I need to be brave enough to have those conversations with my leader. Any advice on how those conversations could effectively and professionally be done would be helpful. In other words, I’d like a good way of saying, “Sorry, I’m not putting any more time in tonight.”

I have worked in mental health for 30 years. We make a big deal of Mental Health Month. However, there is stigma and judgment around people who need a day (or an hour) off for mental health reasons; whether it’s to take some time to meditate or go to therapy appt. The main concern is having enough staff to care for our patients, but only the bare minimum. This causes stress for the employees. They don’t feel their time and mental health are valued. Administration can spew out all kinds of encouragement to staff to care for their mental health, but if they are not allowed the time to do it, or made to feel weak if we do, then poor self care and neglect if mental health are exacerbated.

The best thing i love about Gen Z's and millennials is that they seen what us Gen-x'ers and boomers went through and they are like "oh hell no" when they get into similar work situations and policies about these things. They are driving companies to focus more on their employees as people than as an end to profits. the one thing the U.S. should do is go to a 4 day work week. Many would argue no, but the studies done show productivity goes up with the same amount of work done. Granted some industries this would be tricky to work out, but it can be done. that alone could shift our species to focus more on bettering ourselves in turn societies and actually grow as a species than continue this brain/soul eating routine we've had for over 100 years. The 5 day work week did wonders, back then, 4 days i feel would be the next jump.

This was amazing! I’d like to think I am fairly well-researched on mental health, and I still learned a ton throughout this! Also some major validations on things I felt intuitively but hadn’t found a credible source to verify :) Needless to say, not only am I grateful but also proud!! Been following you for a while, and this feels like a milestone - not only was this educational, but I’m ☠️ at the moist inclusion. 😂 As an American, I am also proud to see Dr. Murthy not only talking about mental health with such sincere support… but talking about it with you! 🥹❤️ Appreciate you Loe - cheers!!

I follow Cash Jordan who is a leasing agent in New York City. He showcases apartments including their neighborhoods and more and more lately he has been talking about the devastation that COVID has caused the city. His main concern I think is that with everyone working from home there is a shortage of nicer living space that people want to\have room to work from, meanwhile huge office buildings have been vacated and will soon fall into disrepair because everyone is working from home with no backsies in sight. With the office crowd gone the lunch and "on the way home" businesses are suffering as well. It seems rather obvious to me that the thing to do is convert part of these office buildings into living spaces, in various sizes with nice but simple styles with amenities in each building and then the companies that operate from them can offer living arrangements as part of their compensation. If you have say...a 10 story building you could do say 1 underground parking, mechanicals, storage maybe a pool. 2-3-4 reception, mail and offices, 5 daycare and conference spaces that transition to social spaces at night, 6-7-8 smaller apartments and guest accomodations for out of town visitors, 9-10 executive living spaces. Roof garden and outdoor play and exercise area. Of course I'm not an expert in these things. What you think in terms of work life balance, mental health concerns in general, maybe even the legal and societal pitfalls to making it workable?

Loved this, but all i can think about is the time either in 2020 or 2021 when a high ranking naval officer got in front of a crew that had lost crewmates. Losses because those people successfully unalived themselves due to stress from a strenuous work environment and long months at sea. That higher up told that crew that they needed to knuckle down and not complain so much because their lives could be so much worse. Implying that so long as they werent being shot at in a fox hole, that they were coming out on the bright side of the situation. Completely invalidating the harshness of their work life imbalance, long hours, and extended family separation. I only listened to the first part of this video and didn't notice the uniform in the thumbnail. Once i glanced at my phone and saw what he was wearing i couldn't help but become indignant at the words he was saying, because all i could hear was another man in uniform completely contradicting these lovely words and mistreating the hardships an entire Carrier's worth of people went through. TL:DR Its all fine and dandy to SAY all these things about valuing a person's mental state to preserve efficiency, but it needs actions to back it up.

It’s really important to understand that the Surgeon General is the highest officer of the United States Commissioned Corps, which is the “unknown” uniformed service of the United States. They are commissioned officers who are doctors and nurses and serve in public health. While their uniforms align with Navy codes, this is a separate branch of uniformed service, which is domestic uniformed service. He is not a Navy Officer, he is a Public Health Commissioned Corp officer. I’d encourage you to look into this more.

For me the biggest source of job satisfaction is knowing that _I_ made a difference, that the good solution I came up with is one very few people would have been able to come up with. And the biggest source of job di-satisfaction is having to be at work when I've got jackshit to do. Specially having to be in the office; I work in the software side of IT, so the inmense majority of my work can be done remotely. If I don't have work to do, let me... clean my house. Go for a walk. Read a novel. I've had jobs which were on-site and it was OK to bring a book or do your stretches or whatever, so long as your job was done and what you were doing got dropped the instant new tasks appeared; I've had others where I had maybe a few hours of work every week but we were expected to "have our workface on" for a lot longer. Worst one: 1h actual work per week, 50 hours of being at work because the HR guy forced us to take a false "2h lunch break" in a place with nowhere to leave to.

Thank you for this. I’m not at a good place mentally, and I feel so seen and understood. I work from home and have almost 0 contact with fellow colleagues, we video call like once a month and only talk about work. I don’t feel included as I’m the newbie. And overall, I feel undervalued, I’m also not being challenged at work and never get feedback of any kind. I really want to change my job, the main factor that is pushing me to do so is loneliness, I need to socialize and build social connections. Ideally, I want a job where I feel included and feel like I’m actually contributing to something. Positive social connections and a positive atmosphere at your workplace are soooo important and definitely have a huge impact on your wellbeing. So again, thank you for this converstation. I’m 26 and mentally, the last break I had was in 2019, since the pandemic, online courses & homeoffice have taken their toll on my health🥲
