John I used to work on a C.N.C miller and lathe and they are just tools to help make things. Some people could say to use a jigsaw or a router is cheating. Love watching you build stuff just the way you do

I first found your channel a couple of years ago, and can't thank you enough for your willingness to share your skills. You have helped me make a couple of jigs, given ideas for turning, and have always taken the time to answer any of the questions I have asked. I truly appreciate you. I have seen a couple of amazing things done with a CNC, and am very much looking forward to your upcoming videos covering yours. Someday I would love to get one to do inlay work, just hoping they have a program that holds the hand of us who don't have many computer skills 😞 I admire your ability to use your woodworking skills to branch out into other areas, and while guitars are not my thing, I still watch some of the videos to glean information I can use in other ways as well. 🙂

Hi John, Too bad you had to scrap an entire series. It's always sad when you end up having to scrap an idea when you have already put in a lot of effort shooting the footage. Nice looking guitar though. I hope you enjoy the CNC machine and your plans with it sounds good. And you are correct in saying a CNC and computer won't do all the work for you. There is a lot of effort and skill involved in making the drawings and files needed to let it do anything. Looking forward to your video(s) on the CNC machine.

Thank you Daniel. to be honest I didn't put a lot into the filming, that was half my problem really. I could go on but I would rather scrap it and create better videos. At least I have the experience under my belt. thanks I know who to come too when I get stuck with CAD ;-)

To be fair, John...I'm subscribed and I've not had a notification for any of your videos since the GGBO. I only saw this one in my recommendations so didn't even know you'd uploaded the PRS build vids. Looks as though the apparent lack of interest could at least be partly Google's fault.

Thanks Tony. That could be part of it but its mostly about me not having the enthusiasm for the videos. I would rather just create new ones in my more usual style.

Personally I look forward to seeing what you do with a CNC. I don't have the money or space for one at the moment, but fully intend to get one for the same purposes as you (detail work, templating). I don't think it works out any quicker to get the machine to do all the work anyway - so if you're a hobbiest that's not really an advantage. I'm also with you on going back over 100s of hours of footage, it's a killer. Both exhausting and it makes you not want to go back into the workshop. I prefer to hear the thought process at the time I think. Good luck!
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris. There is a level of precision the CNC will bring that I would not be able to do by hand, eg with inlays. This will allow me to create much better guitars. you are right though that as a hobbyist and with one of builds the CNC takes longer than by hand so not really a lot of point. That's exactly how I feel about it and part of why I am scrapping the series.

Hi John, before retiring, I worked in the cad/cam world for 30 years so was in at the beginning when we only had DOS based computers and widows was something you looked out through!!(you might have to google DOS 😂) therefore I’m really looking forward to your new CNC journey as I fancy one myself as I miss it. I’ve been a keen guitarist for over 50 years and for fun using a 2d engraver, I used to create lovely two colour wood inlays as samples. We also used to sell vinyl cutters both flat bed and roll feed, you mentioned a drag knife for your CNC. Again for fun/demos I used a drag knife in a vinyl cutter to cut wood veneer to do marquetry. The results were very impressive and easy to do. Is CNC cheating? Absolutely not!! So looking forward to your new CNC videos . Please can you cover the machine build, connectivity, drivers, the design software, files types, tool types and where you sourced everything from. Many, many thanks in advance! Have a great Christmas. Regards John.

Hey John. I know I look young (lol) I am certainly old enough to remember DOS. I remember at school when they installed Windows (3.0 i think) for the first time and they got a lot of us kids to do it for them because they didn't know how to do it lol. I agree that is is not cheating it is just a different skill set. I am currently doing the build of the CNC and I am doing a step by step build video. I do plan to film the whole process for sure. Have a great Christmas!

@@JohnClothier - thanks John, I’m really looking forward to seeing how you get on. There are so many variables in CNC machines that ultimately affect the capabilities but once set up, you will have so much fun. Meanwhile I’m just about to push the button on a Coronet Herald!!!! Hi John i have the Workbee screw drive 1000x 750 and i find it a very capable machine i also use it to assist in my guitar builds i mainly build acoustics and use it for making my body moulds a couple of things to bear in mind they require a heavy bench and make sure your spoil board is flattened with the cnc router and lastly i use vectric v carve pro and its excellent
@JohnClothier

That’s great to hear! I plan to put it on an old unit I made that had my old lathe on it. It’s pretty sturdy. Hopefully it will be ok. Thanks for the tip on flattening the spoil board. I’ve ordered vcarve pro too. So sounds like I’ll have the same setup as you. I’d love to see what you do. Have you got any videos or photos I could see?

Interesting update John. Think you’ve found what you want to do with the guitar line. CNC? Well that’s just the argument about traditional or carbide. I would love a CNC but at the same time still look in some ways that I didn’t make it myself by hand. Everyone will have their own opinion on it that’s for sure. We all get tools that take the manual element away, after all how well can anyone cut a full size piece of ply compared to a table saw that we all have?
@JohnClothier

Hi John, What a brilliant honest video. I would love to have a CNC to take my pen making to another level. I just don't have the space for even a small one. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it. When people say it's cheating I totally disagree. People use electric lathes instead of a treadle lathe because it makes things easier. Sorry rant over. Lol. Take care John. Cheers Huw
