This is part 1 of my entry into the Great Guitar Build Off 2021 Scratch Build competition.
In this episode I am gluing up the body and neck blanks. I will be using Maple, Sapele, Mahogany and some black veneer. After the glue has dried I cur out the initial shapes for the neck and body.
Note that is is a reupload of the same video after it was pointed out I had messed up the audio edit and had some music playing over my voice. Thank you to those that let me know!

I love the idea of using the veneer on the body blank. Gonna have to steal that one for a future build.

Makes it nice and easy to keep track of your centre line and if you are going to paint it no one will know it’s there

Definitely have to be careful with those lines. I am having one hell of a time with that myself. I like the body shape. Like a les tele combo.

Thanks for getting back. I like your builds. The metal leaf on your last entry was stunning. Re the mistakes........ It's nice to know about them and the way you overcome an obstacle us invaluable. However, I have a good friend that over plays mistakes and shortcomings. We ask make them. Sorry if I sounded a little short. QUESTION - What type of paint finish are your going for.

Thank you! I’m not sure yet how I’m going to finish this one. I would like to do some more metal leafing though

That's quite a bit of progress in just the first episode. I feel like I'm so far behind now. :) BTW, one way of taking care of the thin bit where you drilled a little too deep could be to rout a channel at the back of the neck and add a skunk stripe?
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Was all on time lapse though lol. That’s a great tip. Did t think of that. Maybe next time. I’ve glued the fretboard on now and I don’t want to crash into the truss rod
@bhartissimo
@bhartissimo 3 жыл бұрын
@@JohnClothier Oh yes, I wouldn't do that either if the fretboard and truss rod are already in place. Just be extra careful when you carve the neck.

Only the final video has to be 15 minutes I believe? I hope that's right. My first 3 are 41 minutes! Sweet T. Great build John, Good luck!
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 3 жыл бұрын
Um. I’m sure Ben said 6 x 15. In episodes. I could be wrong though lol.

Okay John, I am reading the rules and regulations sheet and it says verbatim "You must produce a minimum of one video and a maximum of six videos of your build process, Final videos will need to be a maximum of 15 minutes long" I take that as meaning the final video will need to be 15 minutes to accompany the 5 photographs showcasing your build! The reason I think only the final video needs to adhere to the 15 minute rule is because in the "Submitting Final Entry Documents" section of the rules and regs document it states that a link to your "final" video will need to be uploaded to a link sent to us by the GGBO team roughly 7 days before the final videos need to go live. I really hope my understanding of this is right. If not, I'm screwed already. I can't possibly show all the work I'm doing in 5-15 minute videos saving the reveal for the 6th video. I mean I shot over 6 hours of video just from the time I glued up my fretboard to the time I finished shaping the neck! I havent even edited the video for my inlay work and my fret install and I already have 3 videos posted with each coming in at around 40 minutes! My intentions are to do the next video which will be inlays, fret install, cutting out the body and routing the cavities with my 5th video being paint and assembly and then the 6th as a summary/reveal to be submitted for judging. I've watched pretty much all of your videos and you are a damn fine woodworker, I know you get what I am saying, your build is even more complexed than mine so to try and show all that goes into these things in 1.25 hours is not realistic, I mean we also need to show our personalities and our style which involves talking and teaching? I got into this from watching Ben and I will say, can you imagine him doing a complete build in 5-15 minutes vids? I think not. I'm gonna stick with my understanding and try and keep my videos on the shorter side but will only make my final 15 minutes long and even that will be extremely difficult. An average handmade guitar takes between 80 and 180 hours to make so condensing that down to less than 2 hours is not only virtually impossible it will not give you a true read of the builders skills if we all only do shorts! Anyway, sorry for my long comment, I'm just super passionate about this and I feel like I have to say what I mean, you know. Happy building brother, peace and good luck! Todd @sweet t guitars

Hi John, I hope you're well. It's been a while since I've seen a new video. How do you find the Triton planer and thicknesser? Does the planer have a wide enough capacity? I'm considering a planer thicknesser in one machine and would welcome your input. Looking forward to your future content. All the best from Yorkshire
@JohnClothier

Thanks. Taking a break for now and planning a new workshop. Does it have enough width, depends what you want to do I guess. I use my drum sander for anything wide. I like the 2 separate machines but I can see the advantage of having just one
