Empress Bulblaxes are more related to bulborbs than other grubdogs. More specifically, they are the same species as Red Bulborbs, and is one of the few species where you can see their entire life-cycle. It starts with the Bulborb Larva. After barely being born, they have a white backside and lack any legs. They are ravenous from the moment of birth, but are also extremely weak and fragile. Despite their fragility, they are still able to survive at a high enough rate, with the shear number of Bulborb larvas born guaranteeing that at least a few of them survive. The Albino Drawf Bulborb was originally mistaken to be yet another breadbug mimic, but they are actually said to be juvenile Bulborb that survived long enough to have grown in size and with legs, but still have a white back. Due to their white backs, they are actually cannibalized by other adult Bulborbs. This shows that their red backs with white spots are actually a way for them to recognize other Bulborbs, and the juvenile’s lack of such a feature leads to them being hunted by their own kind. They then grow once again into adult Bulborbs. At this point, the number of predators for them has significantly decreased with their shear size, allowing them to safely sleep in open areas without much danger. Jumbo Bulborbs are essentially the same as regular Bulborbs, with the main difference being that the Jumbo Bulborbs have a genetic disorder that caused them to grow far larger than what they should grow to. And finally, we have the Empress Bulblax. Bulborbs turn into these when met under certain conditions, and can turn into a colony of sorts, like ants or bees. While the conditions themselves are pretty vague, the one given as an example suggests that this mainly happens when there is something that could threaten the bulborb population. This must mean that when something like this happens, one turns into a Queen and the others begin working together as a unified groups, such as an ant colony, or a bee hive. This will allow them to better forage for food amidst the scarcity, or keep their population going high when facing mass deaths. Little of this is confirmed, but this is what I understand out of how little is given about these. (I had to redo this comment because it wouldn't allow me to edit it for some reason, but here it is now, revised and reposted)

Incorrect on snowy bulborbs- their true distinction is they focus on eating rather than shaking pikmin off like a red bulborb might.

I like how the Dwarf bulborbs being breadbugs makes semse in multiple ways, dwarf bulborbs can be crushed by pikmin, like breadbugs and arent found sleeping becAuse they arent nocturnal like bulborbs

I don't remember where I heard this from but I think the smaller emperor bulblaxes found in Pikmin 2 are meant to be juveniles whereas any solitary bulblaxes seen are noticably older due to their more bigger size

If you were to do another one of these, I think a video on Blowhogs would be cool, as they are the second largest enemy group at 9; 12 if you count their very obvious cousins in Tusked and the 2 Snootwhackers.

Whenever I see the empress give live birth it reminds me of that video where ants kill a cockroach and it starts giving birth and they immediately kill the babies mere seconds after they are brought into the world. Really reminds me of how Pikmin as a series is kind of about the brutality of nature

Nintendo Land had some great minigames

Whether or not the Fiery Dwarf Bulblax is a bulblax juvenile or a breadbug is a mystery. It is said to be a part of the Breadbug family but is also in the grub dog Oculus genus, so one of them is wrong. Olimars description doesn't help either. Growing fiery skin also seems like a stretch for the sake of mimicry, but then again a lot of enemies aren't scientifically accurate when put to scrutiny.

Probably the reason why the emperor bulblax was so strong in Pikmin 1 but was a pushover in 2, was probably because the one in Pikmin 1 was a misidentified sovereign bulblax

11:46 Technically they aren't genderfluid, the correct term is "*hermaphroditism" (not trying to be the "um actually" guy, I just think *hermaphroditism is neat.) Clownfish are similar to the Bulborbs, they have a matriarch and when she dies, the dominant male of the group changes sexes to become the new matriarch. *(originally called it "sexual dimorphism", but that was incorrect. Sexual dimorphism is when there's systematic difference in form between different sexes of the same species. The irony of getting the terminology wrong while correcting someone else on their's.)
