De jong ability to glide across the midfield is insane being a Barca fan it it will be sad for him to go because the amount of times he comes on from the bench during Frankfurt first leg and so many other games and he just changes everything he is always on ball and he's very intelligent if Manchester United managed to get him he will be surely one of the best players in their squad regardless I wish him all the best but I hope he stays with us

If united only sign two players this summer it has to be two quality central midfielders we haven't had anyone it that position that performs at a high level consistently since Carrick retired. Quality central midfielders relieve pressure on the center backs , dominate possession, act as a line of supply for the attacking players, and set a tempo for the rest of the team. All things United have been crap at for long long time.

As a man utd fan, I would love to see any midfielder not back out of moving the ball up the field. Especially when we’re passing back to maguire. Having someone to succeed in 1 on 1/2s would be essential.

Great video cheers. So depressing seeing De Jong's name on the tactics board lining up next to McTominay. You corrected yourself and said it was harsh to say that he hides. No you were right the first time. I watch him off the ball a lot and he blatantly hides. No professional footballer could make himself so unavailable without knowing he was doing that on purpose.

De Jong is the best addition for Man Utd. He’ll improve their build up and by keeping possession there are less transitions which is good for Ronaldo. Just put Bruno as an playmaker on the wing and Donny as the one making runs off the ball and lead the press from the no 10 position

De Jong solves a lot of midfield issues. And I wonder with potential vitinha signing, if Ten Haag is prioritising deep playmakers over ball winners as he wants to see if he can put Fred or Mctominay in those roles. The lack of ability to press from the front will still be an issue if he plans to play Ronaldo, Sancho, Bruno + a RW. Difficult to solve without replacing a big name.

DM option: Fred, Mctominay, Garner CM option: De Jong, Fred, Eriksen AM option: Bruno, Van de beek, Eriksen, Mejbri Solid Midfield but still missing a top class DM. I would prefer Garner as a backup DM. Fred as a backup CM. Donny as a backup AM.

Reminds me of Busquets, but perhaps a little better at going forward? SB was (is) one of the best as a 6. Turning a defender or two and distributing forward. Seems like De Jong can do that but make those runs as an 8 would. They also need to get Maguire and Dalot out of there, but that's just me.

@Real Alpha Busquets is probably one of the best holding midfielders, ever. Anybody that was going to play a similar role was always going to be compared to him, and have a tough time filling his shoes. De Jong is still probably one of the best around right now, but off the top of my head, I can't think of many players that are 25 years old that are as good as Busquets was at that age.

No. The fact that he flopped at BARCA, played under numerous managers and STILL hasn’t forced Busquets to retire is insane. He’s not a world beater, like he was meant to be. People are still talking about his Ajax days. Hes a rich man’s Pogba, he “glides on the ball” etc but ppl STILL dont know what’s his best position. Its 2022. And he’s one of Barca’s highest earners. Plus, It’s not like the EPL is any easier than La Liga, it’s harder. Not to mention United need a proper 6. A destroyer, a ball winner who’s ALSO good on the ball. Someone like a Rodri mixed with Tchouameni. But I hope they pay that amount of cash and continue declining.

Everyone is talking about how good is he at possession but does he have the experience playing with Maguire who will create calamity with dangerous back passes/will opt to make passes himself OR played with Fred who will shadow him instead of making himself available for passes OR AWB who lost his defensive capability so FDJ needs to cover like Henderson. A player is good but let's not forget the system he is being placed at. He is currently not the first piece that you want in a team but rather a cherry to make everything ticks in the end

it's gonna be a "pogba prolem" all over again, good deep playmaker without proper ability to "screen" the back 4, yes he can play 6 but united need a more all around defensive midfield who are creative but ALSO can holding a midfield on his own, de jong couldn't, in ajax he (de jong) got schone, and busquet playing the role at barca, no one can play that role to accomodate de jong at united.

I watch almost all Barca games, but can't say the same for Utd. The rare occasions, when Busquets wasn't there and FDJ had to play the single pivot, the whole team struggled. He's still little a raw in the defensive side. Also, being a big enough man he should have physically dominated the most midfields in La Liga (Gavi does that despite being half his size and six/seven years junior). His technical quality is beyond doubt, but maybe he's just too nice of a guy to battle it out. Even Koeman didn't trust his to be the sole pivot.

He is not raw defensively, there's definitely mentality problems at Barcelona, at Netherlands and with Koeman he was actually more intense. His problem is the lack of intensity with Barcelona. You guys haven't watch him at all, which explains those awful takes blaming the traits of the player instead of more depth issues like mental intensity.

@@TylerSolvestri oh i do watch all his games at ajax, and some netherlands games and occasionaly barca in la liga, the guy above you explicitly saying he's watching all barca games, that's why we can talk what we talk. nobody say he cant or he dont defend if you read it more carefuly, , i literaly said that he can play 6, what we saying (and backed by his stats) it's just not his biggest pros and as i put it, not the midfield profile that united need currently (since as i also said, united didn't have defensive midfield specialist on their team right now) he's not as his best playing as most defensive minded player at the middle, holding and defensively dominating the midfield and winning the ball back with physicality, he did play the role either in barca or netherlands, as someone you thought didn't watch him at all said already, but it is only occasional (usually against a weaker team when they're expected to e very dominant, and speaking as untied fans, there wont be too many much weaker team which united can dominate next seasons in EPL lmao) not 40-50 match a season, thats not his game. that's why 3-4 of his head coach didn't trust him to do that, ten hag dont, koeman and xavi, van gaal dont, maybe they're agreeing on something i assume ? btw if you actually do watch him on national team at netherlands van gaal use koopmeiners as the more defensive midfield, not to mention that netherlands are currently playing with back 3 so you dont necessarily need ultra-strict specialist no 6 anyway since you got spare man on the back. and guess what ? they do play more balanced compare than last year when they use 4-3-3 with de jong in single pivot (and naturally de jong are playing much better too for his national team), i wonder why, maybe had something to do with his role and positional changes ?

Pogba is not press resistant player but dejong is... that's a tremendous advantage for united.... United don't have a ball carrying midfielder so having dejong will massively improve the team... he will clue the attack and defense well... don't expect him to be statisticaly great in goals and assist.... but he will improve this united team massively, there's a reason why ETH wants him...

local stretford lad, ben mee is currently unattached...a £40m contract might make man united appealing as united finished THIRD in manchester (according to the number of goals conceded metric). so, in other words, relegated burnley conceded fewer than man united (who have some experience of relegation themselves...as they have played thursday night football a fair few times in the last decade).

I would chose him over Pogba or Fred due to his defensive line splitting passes, howerver, it would requite Fernades and whoever they choose to play the 2nd winger to come down to build up a lot more often

as a Barca fan, I have to say that the chances created stats are a bit skewed. He hasnt been particularly prolific at opening up deep defences and doesnt really take on the responsibility for the final ball, which is why his number of assists are a bit low

He would work obviously but if hes not partnered by a midfielder who specialises at winning the ball back, or in a system where the team is expected to keep majority of the possession and win the ball back in areas far above the box then the same problems pogba had will just occur again

I think that the issue with Man Utd is Fernandes and Ronaldo. They're very talented footballers and the best players in the team that suit a less structured and process orientated team, but everyone else in the team is better in a highly structured and systematic setup. So what action do Man Utd take to solve this problem? They hire Rangnick, the father of modern pressing systems who loves a highly structured team, which doesn't work. They realise they made a mistake and replace him with ... Eric ten Hag, another coach with a penchant for structure. I'm not convinced buying a de Jong and a RB will solve United's problems, but I am just some guy on the internet getting wound up by things I don't really know much about. Anyway, nice video. I honestly really like the idea of Fernandes on the left, with VDB as the 10, especially with De Jong. Regardless great breakdown. I look forward to this not happening so next season is terrible!

De Jong would be a great replacement for Pogba. Probably more reliable if not as mercurial a talent. Driving from deep and swapping passes with dVDB or Fernandes should create loads for Ronaldo, Sancho +1. Issue is still a proper shielding 6, cause Fred & McTominay are more in the box to box busy mode rather than reliably breaking up attacks. They're good alternate options, but we need an Ndidi, Kante or Brozovic. Plus something else in attack (Eriksen looks likely), a new right back that can cross and probably a new CB.

It sounds like finding payers that can all work together is going to be a problem. Will Ten Hag be a strong enough manager to pull 'star' players like Fernandes off & give Van De Beek minutes? Or choose not to start Fernandes or Ronaldo in certain games if it doesn't fit the tactic?

@@spek888 but they didn't work for footballing reasons. Bissouma may not work for legal reasons. It would be silly to risk that especially with the greenwood situation

Getting De Jong would be a good move, but United still need an out and out defensive midfielder who does the dirty work. De Jong and Pogba's playstyles are overlapping, and everyone's grandmother knows why Pogba didn't work consistently at United.

Frenkie plays VERY MUCH to the sides and backwards. Spanish and Dutch media are eating him alive for it. Funny that you'll say that about Fred and Mctominay but not about Frenkie. Barca fans aren't even stressing the fact he's leaving. 17 year old Gavi, 18 (or 19) year old Pedri and 34 year old Busquets are better players. Kessie probably coming in on a free and Pablo Torre as well. Frenkie won't even be missed.

It looks all good, but if he is a player who played most of his minutes as a defensive midfielder why is his defensive ratings so low? Shouldn't he be better in defense ?
