AC Milan broke the stats. If you were to believe the underlying numbers in the conclusion to the Serie A season Milan would never have clinched the Scudetto. But they did.
Jon Mackenzie was wrong, but he explains how they did it.

Agreed mate, they stopped with the silly purchases and bought smart players like, kessie, bennacer, Theo Hernandez, leao, Kalulu, dias, tonali and Tomori, added some experience with kjaer and Ibrahimovic, all of which was added to donnarumma, romagnoli and calabria who were already there, then realized the talent in Mike Maignan after losing Donnarumma, it's been a great example how a club project should work and how to filter in youth with experience, losing kessie and romagnoli will be a big blow, plenty of experience, but will need to keep bennacer, Kalulu, Hernandez and leao as they are key for the future

As an Italian Milan fan I loved this video, no one in Italy really get how Pioli managed to build a so effective team, a lot of journalists speak about luck, about Leao, about the great saves Maignan did, but this team building is much deeper than what everyone thinks, and you explained very well. Maybe you’re the closest to really understand what Pioli did

Your explanation of the rest defense was spot on. Having quick defenders at the back, instead of the slower Romagnoli and Kjær there helped kill off so many counters. Both Kalulu and Tomori were running at the attackers and winning balls aggressively, and the propelling counters with good vertical/outlet passes. All a joy to watch. The pace and tenacity of Tonali helped cover them when required. In all, a very rapid game plan, unfamiliar to most teams in the league.

also if you want another stat to show you how spot on this analysis is: in the last 5 games Milan scored 11 goals, 9 of them were from counterattacks. More in detail 3 of them were from Leao or Rebic pressing on the opposition RB and 3 were from Kalulu, Tomori and Krunic successful backdefending. Also speaking about leftovers, in those 5 games Tonali scored 3 goals, wich is impressive when you consider that he scored 5 in all season long

@@pietrovitale9940 In was in those last few games that Pioli gave Tonali free roam on the field. Tonali acted more as a half-back for the majority of the season, dropping between the center backs to help break oppositions high presses. But at the end of the season he was literally everywhere, defending and attacking. It’s exactly what I was hoping to see from him because he’s just so darn aggressive and intense.

Our new Owner is a bluff. Maldini and Massara, who are the sport directors, have not yet resinged their contract which are ending on Friday. Plus it is estimated a budget of only 40/50 milions while last year without fulls stadium, the sponsorships were less lucrative and not many bonus coming from winning the scudetti we spent about 70/80 milions. I think that Milan will use 30/35 Milions on De Ketelaere, 0 on Origi, 4.5 on messias, 2.7 on Florenzi and then a midfielder (possibly Renato Sanchez, who cost about 12/15), a defender whose either young Esteve/Thiaw for 8/10 or the trash Acerbi for 5 and hopefully a Right Winger( talks about Ziyech and Asensio for 20/25)

Pulling the extra man up from the CB positions was crucial. Even Kjaer did it before his injury. Kjaer’s role was to mark the lone striker, especially people like Belotti, Immobile, Zapata, Osimen, so if they tried to drop in to receive the ball with their backs to goal, Kjaer would be all over them and wouldn’t allow them to turn. Nearly every time Kjaer was marking someone high up the field the striker would have to pass it backwards or else Kjaer would foul him. This made it so Kjaer didn’t need to be fast, just effective, which he is. Then Kalulu inherited that role for the most part due to his impressive anticipation of the play. Kalulu is smart as hell and reads the games like a master already. He’s not the strongest and he’s not the best at one v ones but if he’s in the right position at the right time you simply can’t get any time of day when the ball is passed to you. Then Tomori covers the spaces left open when the CB pushes up. I remember Kalulu won the ball at the halfway line and then began to make a forward run like a striker after he passed it off to a teammate. Incredible dedication and intensity from a young player.

Another key thing Pioli did was manage the stamina of his team superbly well. Often times Milan fans would criticize his lineup selection or his substitutions but he was very vocal about making sure his players were well rested and ready to give 100% each game. His use of Krunic, Rebic, Saelemaekers, Messias, Florenzi all helped immensely in keeping key players rested for big games. There were also many games that Theo seemed to be instructed to not make so many runs forward to preserve his energy. We didn’t really have a backup LB and Theo played a ton of games because of it. Making sure Theo wasn’t sprinting all game every game allowed him to be explosive when he needed to be. People also criticized Leao for being “lazy” in the beginning of the season but his role was to play as more of a wider striker who didn’t have as many defensive duties, giving him time to relax off the ball and conserve his strength. No point in having all players running around 100% all game, every game, and Pioli did a good job managing the rest cycles.

The very high line of defense was one of the reasons why Romagnoli struggled. He lacks the necessary pace to cope with very quick players on the counter and isn't the most experienced (Kjaer lacks pace but makes up for it with positional intelligence thanks to his experience), whereas Kalulu and Tomori love to those speed battles. Pioli is a very tactical coach. What he achieved with Milan last season was by no means a means feat. Hopefully, now that we have a potentially solid trequartista in Charles De Ketelaere, and potentially Adli (if he works on his shooting), Milan can become less predictable in attack and, invariably, more dangerous. Forza Milan per sempre!

We already knew Kalulu and Tomori was a solid CB pairing (some may say Kjaer's injury was a blessing in disguise) and Maignan was an amazing goalkeeper but had it not been for Tonali's late goals, Leao's assists, Theo's late goal, Giroud's clutch game vs Inter, Bennacer's late goal and so many other clutch games where we pulled out 3 points we would've not won that title.

You should take a look at how Pioli evolved this game once he finally got an upgraded squad this season, Pioli is really underrated esp by online fans who keep on spreading false rumors on him.

We seen a few great teams out of possession this season. Milan in Serie A and Rangers almost winning the Europa league showing there’s more than one way to win football matches

@@NIDELLANEUM All of their advanced stats early on were really impressive in the attacking sense, but it was producing nothing. Mourinho's teams are weird. Can't seem to get the W with more expansive ball even when they want to.

All these system and tactics have really fooled a generation of football fans. If you can simply defend really good and have a few ways to kill your opponent then you’re the better team

I'm german and i thought Restverteidigung was defending the leftovers of an opp. attack. After you defended a chance to clear the remaining threat. So thanks for the info :d
