I still have my first mora knife I got when I was 7 years old in -91. It's worn as hell from 32 years of use but works as a knife. I've used and abused tons of mora knives over the years and never ever had one break on me. I've never understood the obsession with bushcrafters having to baton the shit out of knives. It's a knife. Treat it as a knife. If you want to split stuff bigger than sticks and twigs, use a froe or a hatchet. Then you'll never break a mora, ever... The garberg is just an overpriced crowdpleaser for americans who think you can't have a knife without a full tang. The cheapest Mora knives will last for many many years of wear and tear if you don't use it as something else than a knife.

The point of wanting the knife to be able to baton as well, at least in my case, is to save weight. I usually partake in a combination of bike packing and bushcraft, and it’s significantly easier to only pack a knife/folding saw. It will never replace an axe, but there are many backpacking type situations where the knife becomes the more practical option. Really, at the end of the day, the knife’s ability to split wood makes the difference with respect to whether or not I have the space to bring my travel chess set. :)

I don’t think it’s just Americans who feel the need for a full tang knife, I believe that there are people all around the world who have the same desire for a full tang blade and equally people around the world who know that you can baton small kindling just fine with a companion. The entire argument is kinda dumb imo just use the knife for whatever you need it to do, I’m not saying that you are dumb just the general argument about it.

The Companion comes in a heavy duty model too. 3,2mm blade versus 2,0mm in the standard. Less slicey, but more robust. And still only a fraction of the price of a Garberg. If at all posible to use within its intended use, prob a knife for life.

The garberg is all the knife you'll ever need. What the hell is the point in 4 companions when you're only gonna carry one and break one, and in the woods you'll do far more than slice onions. Simple solution. Opinel for food prep and garberg for everything else.
@mrdarren1045
@mrdarren1045 Жыл бұрын
@@theoutdoorswithrich do you carry all 4 of those companions or just one. And when that one breaks how do you build your fire. Knives made only for food prep are called kitchen knives. The garberg is a jack of all trades. The companion is a stick tang thin rounded spine good food prep knife. But I'm not a chef I'm a woodsman. And any woodsman knows very quickly how superior the garberg is. And it is more capable at food prep than the companion is at batoning, chopping and everything other bushcraft task. Being a better kitchen knife does not make a great bushcraft knife. Enjoy your 4 companions.

The damned knife weighs like 8 ounces alone too, and a companion weighs 3. So the garberg is too heavy for a pack knife to justify the weight, not an EDC.. it's a car-camp knife trying to close a useless gap. 14c also isn't that much better than 12c or 1095 carbon. I can carry 2 companions and they weigh less and stand up to the same task as a single garberg. I should just sell the damned thing.

The thickness is why it doesn't slice like the thin blade. There is a HUGE difference in the steel as well. The grade of steel in the Garberg is superior in both the stainless and carbon models.... Your comparing apples to oranges.
