I have several thoughts on this letter: There is an ongoing D&D comic featuring Minsc and Boo from Baldur's Gate, I don't know if it's still being printed. They were starting a Saturday Morning Cartoon D&D comic at IDW that was part of the lineup, I think it got cancelled while IDW goes the way of the Hindenburg. There are Exandria comics about both Vox Machina and The Mighty Nien Critical Role campaigns. There was also a tie-in for the Honor Among Thieves movie. In addition to Conan, Titan Books also did graphic novelizations of the Elric Saga by Michael Moorcock. They're pretty edgy and badass looking. Red Sonja is still at Dynamite but I haven't read that book in forever. Joe Madureira relaunched Battle Chasers at Image and I had it on my sub but I think it got cancelled because I haven't seen it in months. Shame if it was because I was enjoying it. As for the Big Two, I wish Marvel did better by the Black Knight because he looks like a really cool character but after reading Curse of the Ebony Blade I want to smack Si Spurrier upside the head with a copy of the Once and Future King. As for DC, Constantine is Urban Fantasy but he can scratch the itch if you really need him to but after abandoning their Game of Thrones styled reboot of Gemworld I don't think they've done anything in the genre recently.

The big 2 problem is all they have is superheroes, they badly need to branch out into new genre. They should be creating all new IP set in different universes to appeal to different people. This is why manga is so popular, there’s an endless amount of choice. I’m reading so many different genre now that I’ve never before. I never read romcoms during my time reading comics, but I’m reading them now. But I’m not sure if comics could actually pull off good romcoms, since they can’t write cute characters like in manga.

A lot of the manga I read is fantasy & dark fantasy, it’s a genre I love. The big 2 needs to start new IP not attached to their superhero universe. DC started to do this with comics like “Nice House on the Lake”, they need more of that.

The Last Barbarians written by Brian Haberlin was one of my favorites readings of the past year. The history of Sylv and your older brother surviving in a fantastic world, with a beautiful art. I would like to see a sequel of this. Fantasy comics can be a good alternative to mainstream superheroes comics for sure.

Definitely reading Savage Sword these days! Love what Titan is doing with it in its magazine style format, newsprint-like paper, black and white with a ton of satisfying content. There's always a longer Conan story, a handful of really amazing pin-ups, a cool essay of some sort (seriously!), and it closes with an ongoing Solomon Kane story that's really intense. So it's fantasy on top of fantasy! All said, if any link in this chain was subpar, I wouldn't be as into it as I am. There is no escaping the necessity for high quality content. Honestly, I'd read a lot more anthologies if the quality was consistent.

I have gotten into some fantasy comics. there's a publisher (Insight Comics) that has published a French comic series called Elves which was amazingly enjoyable. Sadly only the first three physical books (TPB) are in English print, the rest you have to get digitally unless you understand French. The same publisher has other titles like 'Mages', 'Orcs & Goblins' and 'Dwarves' sadly harder to find English translations to these. But I would love to see more fantasy comics.

Fantasy, traditionally, has been somewhat of a hard sell in comics. Conan is usually the only outlier here. I know DC had brief successes with D&D in the mid-'80s, alongside their Warlord series. Marvel tried to match Conan with their John Carter, Warlord of Mars and that lasted 3 years. Currently, IDW has a couple of D&D series going and there is (was?) a series of Magic the Gathering mini-series. Dark Horse also still puts out Witcher comics. Image has the current Monstress series and there's usually 2 or 3 other attempts per year, but none have really caught on. There have also been attempts at adapting best-selling fantasy novels like Game of Thrones, Wheel of Time, and Assassin's Apprentice. With the exception of Conan, all of these comics either sell just enough to warrant another mini-series or just fail outright. The publishers don't really have any reason to invest in an ongoing fantasy series that isn't Conan. I'd list Red Sonja but it's up for debate if anyone actually cares about that property or the 26 variants Dynamite does per issue.

I've always loved the fantasy genre. I've got a fairly substantial collection of Magic: The Gathering cards and Warhammer miniatures, my favourite video game franchise is The Elder Scrolls, and I've lost track of how many fantasy novels I've read, but there are hardly any fantasy comics that I'd consider must-read. There's the BWS Conan stuff, Bone, Cerebus (until Dave Sim went nuts), and maybe Battlechasers, but that's pretty much it.

I would love to see more fantasy genre comics on the shelf! Titan Comics has been a godsend with the current Conan the Barbarian and Savage Sword runs. I am so stoked to get my hands on the B&W newspaper print from Savage Sword of Conan every month. And the Barbarian run has been amazing with what they are doing (or did...lol) with Kull. I have a huge pull list every month, but these sit at the top of my list. The biggest pitfall with the fantasy genre in comics, as Perch touched on in the video, is the creative team. For me to enjoy them, the art has to be high quality and the story-telling needs to feel epic. It really needs to be done by writers that understand the genre and artists that are willing to put pencil to paper and have genuine love of the craft. I support a lot of Kickstarter projects that focus on the fantasy genre and there are many talented artists out there doing amazing work. Opus Comics were putting out some great fantasy books as well (not sure what is going on with them now). More fantasy done the right way...Take my money! P.S. Please someone steal Red Sonja away from Dynamite!

I can confirm that getting the right talent on a property will attract people who are coimpletely unfamiliar with the source material. It's Keith Giffen's fault that I got into Warhammer 40k. Becaues I was a fan of Keith, I read Annihilation. Becaue I read Annihilation, I started reading Guardians of the Galaxy. Because of Guardians, I was introduced to Dan Abnett. One day, in a Barnes and Noble, I saw Abnett's name on the spine of a novel set in the 40k universe, and picked it up ( It was "First and Only", if that matters). As a result, I have spent thousands on 40k novels, game books, little metal and plastic figures, paints, and dice. Curse you Giffen!!

I enjoyed Conan back when it was drawn by Barry Smith. Warren magazines had some good fantasy drawn by some European artists as well as the occasional Bernie Wrightson or Neal Adams or Al Williamson. If they brought back some larger comics that were omnibuses of various continuing fantasy stories, each with a story arc, they could continue with the best liked ones while adding new replacements, or spin the fan favorites off into their own titles. Good artists who work a little too slow for a monthly title could do 10 pages a month or so as a try out.

They have had D&D Saturday Morning mini last year and vol2 running right now. For more adult sword & sorcery, there are current runs of Conan, Red Sonja, and Fire and Ice (from Dyanamite based on the Frazetta/Bakshi animation) which has been great, but has suffered from extreme delays, issue 3 is over 8mo late. Some other fantasy world titles that aren't so much sword and sorcery, but in fantastical worlds, worth checking out are Kaya, Sacrificers, I Hate Fairyland, The Forged, Monsters are My Business, and Something Epic.

I've always liked fantasy, but haven't gravitated too much to books in that genre; unless you count the manga based on Legend of Zelda which I have a few. I'm not really into the gritty stuff, so I tend to skip stuff like Berserk or Goblin Slayer; however, I love the Slayers anime and the Fire Emblem franchise of games, and even though the manga is a bit on the bloodier side than the anime the Heroic Legends of Arslan is a great series. I honestly do believe that fantasy would be a good genre to invest for mainline comics if they follow the examples of the manga series or Conan books.

I've always thought that Dungeons & Dragons is simply too broad to serve as source material for an adaptation and that both movies suffered as a result. Somebody looking to create a D&D story should probably choose one of the campaign settings like Dragonlance or Forgotten Realms where the whole point is that it gives you intricate lore instead of the loose fantasy framework provided by the core rulebooks. A lot of novelists and game developers have done very well that way.

I picked up The Last God TPB on a whim at my LCS because it sounded cool and the art was astoundingly good (Ricardo Federici). It is maybe the best thing I've read this year ( aside from Do a Powerbomb! by Daniel Warren Johnson) and maybe the best thing I've read in recent memory. PKJ is now a writer I'll be keeping a close eye on, especially if there is more Last God on the way. After finishing the TPB, I sought out and bought the individual single-issues and want a copy of the hardcover. Good writers being given the freedom to tell the stories they want to tell paired with talented artists is a recipe for success no matter which publisher is putting it out.

If Magic had better art, I'd definitely read it. I just can't get with the interiors the few times i flipped thru. Also Vampiress Carmilla (which i pull) is a current title, that shamelessly rips off the old Vampirella mags (which I love) the art is usually pretty good.

I think you undersell the lore of many games. I'd be interested to see a take on some of the pre-packaged D&D adventures. My experience was quite early so a story arc based on Tomb of Horrors or an epic book on the whole GDQ1-7 set would appeal to me. Maybe even Keep on the Borderlands. I'm sure there are more recent adventures that would work too.

In my opinion, I think there is definitely different types of fantasy, regarding era or decade. I think the Conan books are great. There already is an awful lot of Conan comics out there already. I kind of feel like he's become Batman or Spiderman and done to death. However, his comics and to some extent when his books were popular is from a time that's past and probably won't come back. I mean superficially the 70s and biker culture. Hell, I don't even think millennials even care about Harley Davison's anymore and that culture is dying, like 70s fantasy. I said this, back in the late 80s, looking at the fantasy section at the bookstore and thinking, There is a glut of fantasy novels with really cool covers, but the stories are not good and do we really need anymore fantasy novels clogging the paperback racks? I used to like to go to comic conventions and overhear conversations by "grown-ups", middle-aged dudes discussing the literary genius of Howard and the Conan novels. I used to like seeing Frazetta paintings on the sides of 70s custom vans, but I think those days are over. Will they come back? who knows? Fast forward to the 80s and He-Man and D&D were all the rage. shirtless barbarian men and near naked women on covers seemed to reach their zenith. Remember though, there were a bunch of D&D comics that they tried to make happen, with Dragonlance, which was a best seller and an actual AD&D comic by DC. Hell even, Elfquest and Warlord were also Fantasy stabs at making things stick, but they didn't and fell by the wayside. Who's reading the Dungeons & Dragos and Magic comics they put out now? Not me. I think in the 90s Fantasy took another turn with the popularity of Anime and the over the top armor bikini and elf ears, which for me, turned me off to Fantasy. Again, more Conan, more D&D. etc/ etc. The 2000s came and it was all Lord of the Rings... 2010s...all Game of Thrones.... The pandemic hit and D&D sales skyrocketted... You see where I'm going with this? Maybe not, so let me explain: Fantasy in comics has been around for the last 50-60 years. Longer of you consider Prince Valiant. I think it's always been second fiddle to superheroes. Horror kind of falls in that realm as well. To both Perch and the listener's comment, it's all on the creative team. That goes for any genre.
