Let's do again! But this time, make the dude wear a thick jacket or gambeson cause chainmail was often worn with padded clothing to act as a sponge for hits, protecting both the user and the mail while the mail stopped sharp objects from slashing.

What most people always forget about mail armor is that although it stops blades from penetrating, your body is still absorbing the kinetic energy, so a sword blow to the torso like that is still going to hurt. A lot. And possibly cause internal damage.
@chaosvolt
@chaosvolt Жыл бұрын
That's what a gambeson is designed to mitigate.
@Storkz0re
@Storkz0re 8 ай бұрын
I've tested a bit, a Mail without gambeson provides 80% of blunt pain. But plate armor is light and mitigates kinetic energy even without pad like gambeson.
@talyn3932
@talyn3932 8 ай бұрын
Go for a Gambeson under mail and plate. Full form fitted plate was unreasonable for anyone but the wealthiest. If you don't have form fitted, you definitely want that Gambeson for two reasons... it provides straps and anchor points for your mail and plate to sit right with weight distribution, it allowed you to breathe under the armor and acted like a sweat wick. It prevented armor bite from where plates interlock or meet. And it did a lot to mitigate the impact as it was more than just cloth and padding like most hobbyists make. It was usually some form of semi rigid fiber like horsehair or flax between an outer layer of compressed and glued felt, linen, or wool layers or layered heavy canvas and an inner one of felt or similar wicking material. The Chain dissipates the impact, and if you wear it right, it will do it's job well, but the remainder still needs somewhere to go... that is the Gambeson or your fleshy bits. Your upper arms and legs can probably tank the shot under naked chain, but joints, hips, sternums, etc... really can't.
@Candlemancer
@Candlemancer 8 ай бұрын
@@talyn3932under plate you don't really want gambeson but an arming doublet. It's thinner and lighter and has loops to attach the plate more securely. You don't need as much padding under plate and it gets hotter because it's not breathable like mail.

medieval maille was also (usually) riveted together, not just "butted" together (just open rings pushed together) like most replica/costume maille you see for sale today. Alternating rows would be solid rings and riveted rings. So not only were they stronger because of the material but also how it was fastened together

I used to make chains as a teenager from these, as part of metalhead and punk culture thingy. There is a trick to make them strong and I'd say it would improve your chainmail resistance. You cut the top of the pop, making it super easy for the mail to unbind even by pulling on it hard. If you cut the thick lower part at an sharp angle, it would lower the chance it will break or unbind. Was using my chain as a dog leash for example .

On top of being a softer material, the way pop tab chainmail is assembled classifies it as butted mail, meaning the only thing holding the rings together is the strength of the ring (and aluminium is not strong). Even against steel mail, if it's only butted, it can be stabbed through with enough force. Riveted mail is when the rings are closed again after being joined and makes it far, far stronger against stabs and cuts.

Not sure if this could make a difference but I believe it would, for I know from my woods experience that when you rely heavily on the sharpness of your axe/knife you become almost passionate about its edge. Because if you ever chopped wood with a perfectly sharpened and well balanced axe it does a surprisingly huge difference compared to one that is "just" sharpened. I can imagine that it was the same for a swordsman and his sword. Having the sword PERFECTLY sharpened and practicing well balanced swings and I reckon that it not only goes through the mail you would probably have split the dummy in half when you struck the exposed area like in your video. Edit: so I would ofc also like a follow up :D :P. great stuff great content thanks for helping me fill my youtube addiction with interesting stuff!

@@markov3743 Literally the only problem with his attack is that he should have opted for a diagonal cut instead of a horizontal one, since that would have been simpler for him and would have been a stronger strike. That doesn't mean that the strike itself was actually bad. Edge alignment is king when you're using a sword of any kind, and if that sword were made properly, it would have easily been devastating. I'm not saying his form his good, and he obviously wouldn't do well in a fight against a real person, but that doesn't change the fact that the admittedly poor-form strike would have been more than sufficient in cutting through the weird armour and the shirt underneath quite effortlessly.

As someone who has been making Chain for 40 years I found this interesting. The alum foil sword needed to be compressed a heck of a lot more then you did. Also when you sharpened the edge you basically split it in half (think about it, you rolled it then weakened the seams on both sides). As for the real blade, you do not want a razor edge on the blade. A razor edge will chip and blunt on the armor making it worthless. You want more of a chisel edge to get your cut without destroying a thinner edge. That is why maces were more effective against chain, they did not get through it but they mashed everything underneath it. But from a cosplay or con sort of armor it did not look too bad. May have worked better for you if you had sewn the tabs to a leather backing making a scale mail out of them. Would have been denser and the leather would have held it together better.

Unriveted mail was (according to many sources) also used historically and looks good enough, and as far as materials go, steel rings made from wire are not much more expensive. What is expensive is work that needs to be done. I know some people from knight brotherhoods who used unriveted mail simply because it was easier to both made and also repair on the spot, and they were good enough protection. I don't know if it was done historically (but there is huge chance some people did) but they also liked to attach some brass or even copper rings to some parts to make it look better.
