Is Paper Armor Really Stronger While Wet?

Earlier last month, someone in the Louis Weisz Discord suggested that I try doing Paper Armor. At first it seemed too simple - but when I looked into it further, I realized there was more to this than meets the eye. The biggest boast of all was that "this armour performs better when soaked with rainwater" - but is that even possible? There's only one way to find out!

As a Chinese myself and a history enthusiast, I would like to contribute my two cents to this topic. First of all, the ancient Chinese mostly used silk paper to make paper armor for much of their history. Cotton was only available (imported to China from India) from the Ming Dynasty onward (14th century AD onward), while paper armor appeared much earlier, as early as the 6th century AD. Secondly, there were at least two (or perhaps even more) types of paper armor used in history. The first type is layered paper armor, which is constructed in a similar fashion as lamellar armor, stacking layered paper blocs one on top of the other. The second type was more similar to medieval European gambeson, which was a type of quilted silk paper filled with silk floss, calico, and other types of fibrous materials (including animal and human hair!). Both types existed in China. Thirdly, the quote "paper armor being more effective when soaked with rainwater" only came from one single Ming period text in a book that was not about military but rather about the history of the dynasty and various other anecdotes, while earlier Tang and Song sources and other Ming sources made no mentions of such effect, hence I think this quote is rather dubious.

I think they meant that if paper was wet, and then left to dry then it’s stronger. Because if you make paper wet and into a ball, then leave it to dry, the paper ball will become much stronger. I know this from experience because when I was a small kid I did that. I still have the ball and it’s surprisingly strong.

Great video, fun experiment! Perhaps the efficacy of the ancient paper and its corresponding response to moisture may have something to do with how their paper was made. It may be similar to how carbon fiber derives much of its strength from the specific weave of the fibers, and not simply from the material composition. Definitely thought provoking!
@Weisz
@Weisz 4 жыл бұрын
That's definitely an interesting idea! Maybe I should publish my thoughts based on my research for this video, because there is SO much that I could talk about. Unfortunately, talking about paper composition is super boring on camera. The challenge is that paper is, by nature, a non-woven material. So any weave would have had to be done after the paper itself was made -- or if the paper itself was woven, then is it really paper? I think that depending on the length of the fibers used, linen paper might have been a compelling and realistic option (since that's what is blended with cotton in US bills, a very durable paper) -- but with as extensive as this project already was, attempting to make my own paper would have been more than I could handle. Even so, I'm not sure it would have made a whole lot of difference (except that it might have absorbed more water). Tl;Dr - I know WAY more about paper now than I ever really wanted to....

an idea for next time might be to use sap or some sort of ancient glue recipe to adhere the layers together and also to use weapons similar to the weapons of the time and let the armor dry because maybe it makes difference?

your edge alignment is uhhhh. Well it leaves some to be desired. I would look into something like a messer, cutlass, or *cringe* katana. Getting a better edge alinement with a single edged curved sword is easier and the thicker spine makes the weapon more forgiving of bad cuts. Armor still would have held but i think we would have seen more extreme damage, more a "i got to get this replaced." kind of deal.
@Weisz

now THIS is helpful -- I'll keep the existing sword for the thumbnail shots though :D so sad that katanas have become cringe, but i do tend to agree - too many "kAtAnAs ArE sHaRpEr ThAn LiGhT iTsElF" bois out here

One thing you can see is the flex in the blade. It bowed out on the hit, that is energy waisted. That energy could be pushing the blade deaper, but was waisted. You could look into some hema stuff on the internet or British military saber books. Most hema clubs are closed right now so that isn’t a great option. Katana bois are pretty bad. The katana *made properly* is terrible at clashing with anything hard as the heat treat causes cracks in the blade. Modern non deferentially heat treated blades are more durable but loose an amount of ease of use. Both have an edge geometry that is lacking for fighting armored foes. I will see if I can suggest any channels to you for drills to get you moving right, cause longswords are not the most forgiving weapon.

I think by better, they mean it prevents the wearer from staggering as much from the force of a blow due to the added mass of the water. The armor itself would take more damage, but also absorb more of the impact

Let me say first off that your videos are very entertaining, so thanks. Secondly, I'm not sure this one has been myth busted, for lack of a better phrase, quite yet. I mean, I'm not sure you're getting a benefit with how much air gap is between the pages, so loose stacks might not be a proper test. So would more of a papier-mâché method work better? Basically using the water as a binder and/or effectively making cardboard, maybe that's more what was meant? Perhaps even testing a version dry, then wet, then dried after wet (like a layered cardboard almost). Though it's wood, maybe this is more relevant to "Crushed wood is stronger than steel" or "Chinese researchers develop super-strong material for aerospace applications", or "Researchers Make Wood Stronger Than Steel". And as TheXanian mentioned, silk paper sounds very viable, as silk is also one of, if not the, strongest things per weight found in nature. I think this debate should most definitely be revived. Best! Sources for consideration: www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-01600-6 www.xinhuanet.com/english/2020-05/26/c_139089102.htm www.voanews.com/science-health/researchers-make-wood-stronger-steel

There’s a lot of inaccuracies in this video, but you’re operating with a quite limited budget and resources so I’ll give you that. But the ones I really want to voice, that others don’t seem to mention too much, is the difference between modern crossbows and ancient crossbows. Many ancient crossbows had MASSIVELY higher draw weight than modern crossbows, many requiring pulley mechanisms to even TRY to notch a bolt. The others that others are mentioning are the paper used, and so on. I love your content, thought I’d throw in my two cents to show I care! Keep up the good work

@demolition3612
@demolition3612 3 жыл бұрын
It would have been heavier when wet, not more mobile, mobility is in the design of the armor and where it is placed, look at late medieval European plate armor, its mobile as heck because of the placement of the joints and the engineering behind the armor, also im 95% sure the ancient Chinese would have used actual padding under their armor.

Armor made from paper jacketed in silk was highly effective against arrows, from what I understand. A properly fletched arrow spins during flight, which would cause the silk to twist around the arrowhead, making it stall and jam into the paper core; failing that, the silk wound around the arrowhead made it much easier to remove from the wound without damaging the surrounding tissue.
