I remember about 40 years ago we were awaiting our turn at the dumper at the back of the Albertsons (I think), and I was fifth or sixth in line, and it started raining. Pouring. Niagara Falls pouring. Our little group did not have cars. Not me at that time. Everybody left. I moved my pull cart over to that dumpster and went at it. Filled my cart (a big one, not small like the ones today...I could fit a banana box in the bottom!) like I was playing Tetris. Meat, potatoes, canned goods, etc., and the fried pork skins and chips. That is what reminded me of this day. Then the employee brought out a full box of bread. I mean, it had like 20 pullman loaves of white bread in it. I emptied a trash bag from the dumpster and used it to cover the bread cardboard box. After I filled my cart, I precariously balanced the box of bread on top of it, with plastic bags holding light items tied to the top of the cart and all along the openings clear to the bottom of the cart, my son carrying what he could, and walked the six blocks home. That cart must have weighted 150 pounds or more, but it held up like a pro. Sore for days. I miss those times. I think I was the original bag lady.

Your comment reminded me of my grandpa. He used to go out to the bakery and bring home loaves of bread and then go up by the meat store they would throw out the hills of the cheese in the end parts of the meat and this was about 20 years ago. They used to call my grandpa Charlie the Can man because he used to go up and down the alleys in the streets and collect aluminum cans he’s passed on a few years back I think that’s why I’m so frugal because of my grandpa. Blessings to you the original bag Lady.😇🥰

I got the chance to do some night diving last night. I'm so glad I did. The Aldi's dumpster had 4 raccoons trapped in it. It was pretty empty. But there were enough boxes to stack up by the door for them to climb out on.

Make a pie crust out of the pop tart pastires, like a Graham crackers. Smash them up, add a little butter. Press them in the bottom of your pan. Make up some pudding , using 1/2 cup less of the called for milk. Put the pudding over the crust. Maybe a little strawberries on top , or cherries... you get the picture.... When i see the rectangular boxes with cut-off corners originally used as a base for cases of product, I keep seeing pet beds for small dogs and cats. Strip off the plastic, give the boxes 1 or 2 coats of interior house paint on all edges, add a custom sized pillow, and maybe glue some graphic or clip art dowloaded from the internet on the outside edges.

It's like people have never been hungry before, or gone camping! I've never gone hungry because of lack of food but have gone a day or two without food (self imposed or for colonoscopy prep) and it gets depressing very quickly and the dandelions in the yard start to look pretty tasty!

Amy you nailed it on Why People Prep.. there are a lot of reasons. I am a prepper and like you I prep for financial instability and natural disasters which in Ohio can happen at a moments notice. Last week AEP decided to shut off several areas of our city with no warning for 2 days.. Yeah!! I had solar lights outside lamps with extra batteries, battery operated fans, canned foods and a way to heat them.. though it was hot as Hades here we could have been a whole lot worse off. We've had this happen before with storms that knocked the grid down for a week ice storms in the winter.. Be Prepared Not Scared. I'm so glad to see you are thinking about your families security. And absolutely on target about the sweets and snacks we all need a little mental pick me up when going through stressful situations. Anna In Ohio

The other day I was out and about I rode by Kirkwood dumpster, and I found a two drawer rolling kitchen cart . Perfect condition!, just missing a drawer...easy fix. I looked it on the Kirkwood web, lol...good grief! It's worth 250 bucks. And I got it for free! Happy Happy Dance!

Historically, our pantry was pretty much prpurchased on sale and allowed us to enjoy those sales prices on non sales weeks. We also used it to reduce our need to purchase groceries when we were saving for a want or need, we had enexpected expenditures, or something happened to the 8ncime stream. Right now, it is letting us eat better for cheaper during our inflationary times; this frees up money for gas and then fun stuff.

Shocking you don't have 7 or 8 hummingbird feeds around the house! Ick, Pop Tarts. For a good grab and go breakfast or snack that is similar to those stale sugar rush tarts, try Betty Crocker's "Filled Cookies" recipe, yum! That's been my go-to recipe since oh so many decades ago to use up grandma's ancient homemade jam. Of course, not astronaut preps but to enjoy now. Generations ago, people didn't have so many end of the world worries yet we're suppose to be so far advanced in 2022.

But generations ago, storing food and other supplies was the norm. Always. Throughout history, people have always had to worry about and deal with drought, famine, disease, war, all the time. They just didn't know about the imminent zombie threat yet. You'd think we would have learned by now, but we are the same old idiot human race screwing things up (I think specifically of Putin here). You'd think the first 2 world wars would have taught us more, but maybe they are slipping away from our collective consciousness too much.
