For years, I have tried everything imaginable to get rid of my over the top swing path. No matter what I did I could not get an inside path with anything other than a short iron. Turns out that the root cause was this incorrect rotation of my forearms on the downswing, which throws the club face out and over the top, regardless of everything you try to do with your body to prevent it. Chris Ryan is the best instructor on KZfaq. He explains things in ways that communicate clearly and effectively. This video was so helpful.

Great video, brilliant explanation, I wondered if you could explain how manipulations/poor wrist movement would effect the shot. Also is this motion the same with all clubs. E.g bowed wrists for 3 wood or Driver? I’ve been hitting a hook with longer clubs and it’s killing my game. I suspect it’s my wrists which is how I ended up here!

I've struggled with this for years. I find that it feels like I have more strength with a cupped left wrist and when I try to bow it per your explanation, it feels weaker in the swing. Do you have an exercises you recommend either 1) light weight training to train the muscles or 2) swing drills to practice getting the muscle memory to change? Thanks.

I've been dealing with wrist pain the last two golf seasons (I live in a high alpine environment, so I only get to play in the summer). I've also been struggling with a weak fade that has been terribly annoying. As I was eating dinner and talking to my husband about another frustrating round and left wrist pain at the top of my swing, I had an epiphany, what if it's my wrist?! After watching this video, wouldn't you know that my wrist and fade issues all seems to stem from my lead wrist being too extended.

Hi Chris, I am working on flattening the lead wrist in the backswing having changed my grip to a pretty neutral one. Ball strick is much better and I don't lose bad shots right. However, I have started to develop a tender right elbow (right handed golfer). I assume this is due to the unfamiliar forearm rotation in the new swing, have you seen this before and are there any exercises I can use to stop this.

Does the red position on the downswing depend on someone’s grip being neutral? I for instance have a stronger grip and when I’m bowed on the down swing I hit a hook. Wold you recommend changing the grip to a more classical neutral position?
@valderja

I played a couple of times this week and really concentrated on keeping my grip nice and soft. I found I was getting much better ball striking going on and really launching the ball especially with my irons. Would having a loose grip help to promote the correct wrist angles during the swing? I notice that my left hand at the top looks quite cupped normally when I look back at it.

Another great vid. On a proper swing, how much do you try to control your wrist? Or it’s very soft wrist you just let the weight of club trail behind you as you rotate? I don’t know how much do I want to manipulate the club face and wrist angle on the downswing.
@101Esay
@101Esay 6 жыл бұрын
Generally it is not ideal to mentally manipulate your wrist while you are actively attempting to hit the golf ball. As Chris mentioned (6:55 mark), you want to have a "flat" or slightly flexed wrist at the top of your back swing, the club face has a far better chance of delivering a square club face at impact while the wrist of your lead hand will be flexed forward to help achieve dynamic loft. My advice is during your practice (especially your practice swings) on the range, be aware of what your wrist is doing at the top of your backswing. It should either be flat or as Chris suggested, "slightly flexed." I believe the more and more you practice, the more consistent your ball striking will be. Also as mentioned with your practice swings, I suggest setting up like normal, taking the club back, and then simply stopping at the top of your backswing to check and see what exactly your wrist is doing and modifying from there. Hope that helps.
