I randomly decided to log on to ktube to see if you posted, and here this video is in the subscriptions feed posted 33 seconds ago 😭 As I said many times before, I’m so excited to see where this channel goes! It must feel overwhelming to finally post the videos you’ve been working on for so long, I hope you can enjoy the whole process!! An accessible approach to kpop content is sorely needed in the community, and I’m so grateful that you’ve taken the initiative to be this resource for people. I agree, kpop is kind of an unknowable thing most of the time, but identifying patterns in between groups and companies can be a good way to allow more people to recognize kpop for what it is + hopefully make it more approachable in the future

Talk about timing! I cannot possibly thank you enough for your support, but lord knows I shall keep trying. It is simultaneously both overwhelming and a tremendous relief to have finally hit the "start" button for real. I already have almost seven episodes completed and now I get to look forward to each of those dropping. Particularly excited about my forthcoming unserious guide to Kpop fandom names and what I would have called them instead. If that doesn't get a comment section going, I literally do not know what would. 😂

Thank you so much for tuning in! I have an episode in the works that's talking about the influence of drum & bass on Kpop, particularly 5th gen, and how Kpop can at times sound suspiciously like some of the genres it pulls influences from while simultaneously having a culture surrounding it that is night and day different. It'll be the first in a series examing genre influences. I think reggaeton will be up next. I have so much content I am excited about in the works that being patient for it to drop is going to be the hardest part. Either way, thanks for popping by! Looking forward to your next vid as well 💖

LOVE THIS SO MUCH. You're already fantastic at this omg. I would like to know why there is a disparity between who people think are good idols vs. who people think of as skilled idols. With the recent criticism/hate/whatever you think it is of Sakura (personal note: I think it's both), it makes me wonder how these are some of the same people who theorized Sakura was originally ranked first in PD48 and, in many cases, thought she deserved that ranking. If Sakura isn't skilled, why did so many people feel so confident that she had to make the group, even getting an A ranking from her audition? Has something changed? Did she change? Did the fandom change? I think it's probably a combination of factors, but it's hard to get a solid grip on. You would think a contestant like Chaeyeon with undeniable immense talent would be fighting for first, not twelfth.
@overthinkingkpop
@overthinkingkpop 3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! 🥰 Given that I want to help make this content accessible to newbies as well, I think it might be worth taking an even higher level view of starting by explaining survival shows, then rigging controversies, and then honing it down to how the PD48 rigging scandal continues to undermine the careers of former IZ*ONE members to this very day. On the bright side, at least people have finally shut the fuck up about whether Chaewon deserves to be an idol, so at least there is that. Once again, thank you for your support. I'm really excited to finally get this thing off the ground.

@@nayeonchantix To be fair, the fact that people DON'T give her that flak anymore shows that it's entirely possible to overcome those rumors with dedication to skill improvement. The fact that Sakura decidedly has yet to do so kind of speaks for itself. Kind of a tangent, but every time I go back and listen to IZ*ONE, particularly "Panorama," all I can hear is how strained and immature Chaewon's voice sounds compared to how comfortable and healthy she sounds in LE SSERAFIM. Their discography doesn't force her to abuse her voice in the same way and she sounds so much better as a result.
@nayeonchantix
@nayeonchantix 3 ай бұрын
@@overthinkingkpop you definitely have a good point. I think it's interesting how some companies really put their artists' voices in danger. Like, arguably, JYP's obsession with the half air technique may have caused Jeongyeon vocal decline. It's good when they understand an idol's actual strengths and weaknesses. I hope this incident has caused Sakura or Hybe or both to reconsider how Le Sserafim can best utilize her. Because just giving her less lines isn't fixing any problems.
@overthinkingkpop
@overthinkingkpop 3 ай бұрын
@@nayeonchantix You absolutely hit the nail on the head there per JYP. Yeji is another idol who is absolutely destroying her vocal chords by constantly forcing high notes that are outside of her comfort zone. Some of those "Cheshire" encore stages were downright painful to listen to-- not because they were BAD (although let's be real, they weren't great either) but because I could hear how terribly strained their voices were. It made me cringe thinking how fried their throats must be. That kind of singing will really hurt your voice in the long term without proper technique to support it. If my deep speaking voice didn't immediately give me away, I'm a contralto, so my vocal "comfort zone" falls much more in line with a tenor's range than a typical woman's does. Luckily I have just shy of a three-octave range (goes up to G#5, if that means anything to you), so I can hit 97% of the notes in most Kpop songs. Nevertheless, I find myself singing down an octave to quite a number of JYP GG songs to avoid straining my voice. Even on the BG side, in one of my upcoming episodes, I'm comparing Seungmin and Bang-Chan's vocal technique and I mention how frustrating it is that JYP forces both of them to sing so high all the time because I stand to reason that they're both baritones being forced to masquerade as tenors purely for the sake of it. I'm also glad you brought up the point about Sakura + lingering survival show rigging repercussions, because I'm going to go back and add in some context pertaining to that in that Kep1er video I'm working on. Thanks for the suggestion!

on the topic of possible video topics, an interesting video series could be a series on kpop fandom culture, with videos on common terms used, what "stanning" is, the darker sides of fan culture (stalking, shipping), etc. another topic i find interesting is how people seem to think they know idols, despite what we see of idols being a highly curated persona, usually in edited and, to at least some degree, highly produced content. yes, even in lives - they have staff with them to ensure that they don't fuck up and say something stupid (i guess).

Ultimately, "Kpop is a music genre" is a true statement, but I feel like it feels far short of fully encapsulating everything Kpop has to offer. Kpop isn't /just/ a music genre because it's fundamentally an audiovisual medium. Its visual aesthetic and dance elements are core to its identity as well. Ultimately, though, those are driven by the music, not the other way around, so it is understandable to feel like those don't elevate Kpop to its own category.
@aniaalicea7640

I've just come to define it as a divergence in terms of its inception/formation of performers/artists due to its training system, which is pretty distinct. Also for the slight divergence in terms of how they market their performers/artists. An interesting topic of discussion could be the large influence of black culture that's within kpop in many aspects. Another topic could be the overconsumption that can arise, which has been exacerbated with the inception of fancalls and photo card collecting.

For a future video how is it that some groups have such a distinct sound/concept (dream catcher) and others can do what ever they want (g idle) and it still work for the group?? Like wtf cus some groups get hate for doing one concert too much so how does that balance work and does a groups need “a sound”??
@overthinkingkpop
@overthinkingkpop 2 ай бұрын
That's interesting that you mention Dreamcatcher in that context, because I was just discussing earlier today how impressed I am by Dreamcatcher's versatility and ability to pull off a wide array of different sounds. 😅 Check out their songs "Silent Night," "Shatter," and "Sleep-walking" for examples of them dabbling in trance, trap, and d&b respectively. I actually think of their sound as harder to pin down than (G)I-DLE's. Thanks for the suggestion, either way! It's definitely an interesting point how some groups are a lot more comfortable morphing concepts than others. Red Velvet stands out as another example of a group that can nail any concept under the sun with no way of knowing what direction they'll go next. Meanwhile, groups like IVE and LE SSERAFIM get tons of backlash for straying from their established formulas. No way to know, I guess.

Pop in general isn’t a genre it’s just short for popular so kpop is just Korean music thats popular

Haha you're the first one to catch that reference to my past self 😘 I briefly considered calling this channel "clearlykpop" but I think I was right to go a different direction with it.

Thank you! A little clever editing can go a long way in keeping your attention. I'm sure at some point down the line, I may think about recording video and incorporating it into my episodes, but for now, it's hard enough to get myself motivated to record the narration (which is by far the least enjoyable portion of the development process for me) without also having to dress up and put on makeup to record. 😅 Lots more good stuff to come! Thanks for watching!
