WWE 2024 Is Attitude Era 2.0?
#attitudeera #wwe #wwenews
EDIT THANKS TO A COMMENT:
Vampire: the Masquerade 1) was made and owned by White Wolf, not Wizards of the Coast, at the time and 2) it's a tabletop RPG, not a card game
Over the last 24 hours since The Rock mercilessly beat and berated Cody Rhodes on WWE Monday Night Raw, there have been some (younger) members of the online wrestling community who have started touting this era as being a rebirth of the famed "Attitude Era" of the 1990s.
It's not.
We'll go into what made the Attitude Era what it became, how its different from what's going on now, and clear up some of the inaccurate descriptions of that time in WWF history that was more than just blood, long promos, and bad language.

I was following a Twitch channel that was showing a lot of attitude era shows & people in the chat was constantly discussing how much a lot of the segments & matches sucked because they did. People got rose tinted memory googles & think that wrestling back then was awesome because it’s become a trend to rag on modern day wrestling. But other than very select wrestlers & segments when you go back & actually watch most of it is super cringe. It’s basically Married With Children style humor mixed with pro wrestling & 5 minutes matches.

Your videos are a public service. You're right, that most of the wrestling fans today on social media saying this is the Attitude era 2024 didn't exist then, or were children. They only remember what WWE LATER told them about that era in dubious documentaries produced after they bought WCW and ECW. Even younger people in the wrestling media sometimes get this wrong because they look up flawed sources.

After being in the IWC since 2005 (sadly…) I’ve noticed that there will never be a winner regarding what Era was better. Fans will always resort to the era they watched as children/when they were new fans. Nothing will beat what they saw when they were purely just fans. This is why oldheads hold the attitude era so close to their hearts. What’s funny is that no one likes the Ruthless aggression era while it was happening. That time period was swamped by fans saying the attitude era was better that Cena was a cheap Rock. No one likes the ruthless aggression era while we were in it. All the sudden now those kids grew up and we adore the ruthless aggression era. What changed? I have the same expectation for this “Renaissance Era”. We’ll all say it sucks and it’s not as good right now. In about 15 years when things change and we have a bunch of new faces we aren’t used to, we’ll magically love the days when Sami was in the bloodline, and Rock was a heel, and celebrity matches were always bangers, triple H was cookin good stories. You have a choice as a fan whether you want to spend this time complaining for the sake of complaining, or just enjoying the ride. -I wish I enjoyed the ruthless aggression era while it happened.

There's been too much focus on "era" talk over the past 20+ years. We didn't sit around in the 90's and say "wow, this sure is some Attitude Era, huh?" even though Vince explicitly called it that. I think it's best if we all just sit back and let this era define itself with it's actions and booking before trying to tag it with a buzz word that there really isn't any value in outside of referencing it in past tense 10-to-20 years from now.

I completely agree. I’ve been watching WWF/E since 1992 and honestly it’s very offputting how attached people are to something over 2 decades ago. Yes it was a fantastic time! No one’s saying it wasn’t, but some fans are so determined to continue this narrative that anything besides the attitude era was trash. Imagine watching a show for over 20 years and refusing to think it’s ever got better. Imagine that. Watching a show for 2 decades and you think it’s been downhill the entire time. Why do you watch it if you think the show’s never recovered?

As someone who wasn't around during the Attitude Era (in fact, I was born around the time Undertaker debuted as the American Badass) I love this video. Personally, I'm a fan of this era of WWE being called the "Cinematic Era" (or "Cinema Era" if you wanna lean into the Bloodline memes), or even the "Blockbuster Era", as I see lots of similarities between current WWE, at least on its main event scene, and many superhero stuff from the likes of Marvel and DC; in fact, even though I'm not a fan of thse types of movies, this year's Mania feels to Mania 39 like what Endgame was to Infinity War (or at least it seems like that's what HHH wants it to be). And it's very similar to how they borrowed from lots of pop culture things during the Attitude Era, just like you said or even like how Vince McMahon pointed out when they started doing that back in '97. I've also seen the term "renaissance era" thrown around, but I think that's a better name for the American wrestling industry as a whole, mainly with AEW becoming a thing and landing a major TV deal with Turner but also with the likes of TNA, NWA and even MLW being around in some way, shape or form.

But you still wanted to see Ken Shamrock or Golddust or Val Venis. You never knew what was going to happen. Most of the matches were crap too. Today we have one person, who made his name in the attitude era, who is a big personality. But imo he is making Cody and Roman look weak since they get so much less time and then Cody freaking cries. If he won the title I could excuse crying. But he looks like a wuss. Roman is an after thought and I am not sure people even realize Seth is involved.

I feel as well people have rose tinted glasses on when looking back at the atittude era like its an absolute perfect era with zero flaws when in reality it wasnt that great. 97 was the transition year where they were experimenting with what could work as wcw's nwo angle was white hot. 98 yes things got interesting with stone colds best world title run but the mid card wasnt that great. We had some great moments come out of this era like rock's heel turn and fued with mankind as an example. 99 was full blown russo writting so matches were now 2 minutes long with rest of the show mostly promos and vignettes. The roster was at its peak and would continue to get better come 2000 Year 2000 is probably its best year. We got much better match qualities and we now have eddie, benoit, malenko, angle on the roster along with jericho who debuted in late 99. A new head writer who was knocking it out the park. 2001- the wind down which comes to an end at mania, not much to say as it ended pretty early in this year. Overall i recommend people go back and watch the era now as if doesnt hold up as well. Personally speaking the ruthless aggresion era is a much better era
